As a mother of two sons, gran to a boy and a girl and a still-practising nurse I can't believe that I have to ask this but, to cut to the chase, when with your GD how do you refer to her genitals?

I have GD(5) staying with me for half-term - at bath-time I was helping her to dry and and asked if she'd done her 'privates' properly - yes grandma, I've done my 'bits'.

It was so simple with boys and I was always precise ..... it was a penis.

Mothers of girls please advise!

My Aunt told my cousins they were called Robin/Betsy!! Other family members have all agreed when introduced to someone called Robin, we immediately think of their willies grin

BTW. fou fou is French for crazy, a bit nutty! grin

Galen Wed 18-Feb-15 10:42:59

Almost as bad as the friend who referred to my goldfish Lysistrata as Clitorisshock

Anne58 Wed 18-Feb-15 10:10:57

I did know one family where the boys had a Willy and the girls had a Wilma!

My DGD's say "FouFou" aswell Bez They are 7 and (almost) 9. We had a giggle when they watched the film The Aristocats when the french horse called Miss FouFou came prancing along. The girls thought it was hysterical that a horse should be called after their girly bits. grin

It makes me think of that wonderful line in "Calendar Girls" where Annette Crosbie says indignantly that there will be no "front bottoms"! shock

Same here, Iam64. Introductory training exercise (bet you had the same one?) was to get one male and one female to lie down on a sheet of wallpaper lining, get someone to draw round their profile and then give them 20 minutes to write on the paper all the different names and euphemisms for intimate parts of the body. The list was endless, but they ended up with some knowledge of how children refer to those body parts. The important thing is that children know the correct words, even if they don't use them as frequently as professionals would prefer.

I remember telling my two girls the (official)words for their various 'bits'....but a little later they hadn't got one of them quite right...one referred to her 'liquorice' and the other to her 'ticklish'!

Front bum and back bum.

But vagina would be incorrect Iam the external genitalia is the vulva.

No wonder there's confusion and 'bits' is used instead!

Part of my work involved training police and social workers on interviewing children who alleged sexual abuse. The number of words children use to describe their genitals can get in the way of understanding what they're trying to tell you. I'd never heard "flower" as a description for your tuppence!

If only we all used vagina/penis smile

Inflation Ana?

harrigran Wed 18-Feb-15 00:08:41

Bottom, front and back.

Ana Tue 17-Feb-15 23:27:52

I've heard the phrase 'keep your hand on your ha'penny', Anya, but not your tuppence!

Anya Tue 17-Feb-15 23:05:42

My DiL (and hence my GD, also aged 5) refer to their tuppence! Never heard that before. My GS (8) was crying in pain because his younger brother kicked him in the 'no no zone'

Ana Tue 17-Feb-15 22:52:51

Exactly. Ask your DIL what she'd like you to say.

rosequartz Tue 17-Feb-15 22:45:27

Whatever her DP use perhaps?

MiniMouse Tue 17-Feb-15 22:17:51

My MiL referred to it as her undercarriage.

Mishap Tue 17-Feb-15 21:32:49

My mum used to refer to my bits as Pamela - I was always a bit puzzled when I met people of that name!

Galen Tue 17-Feb-15 21:28:25

I think fou fou is french?

Mishap Tue 17-Feb-15 21:08:38

One of my DDs when about 4 was examining her bits and announced "There's a label down here" - OH and I came up with various suggestions as to what the label might say! - "Handle with care" maybe!

Bez Tue 17-Feb-15 20:41:09

Funnily enough my DGD came and said something to DD this evening and referred to her bits as Foufou - she is a young adult so I imagine that is what her age group call it.

kittylester Tue 17-Feb-15 20:40:13

It was twinkle in our house - I must check what the DDs say to their girls!!
