Brings back memories of nearly 50 years ago meeting future MIL. Every Sunday for 5 years she proudly gave me tinned salmon and cucumber sandwiches.

I hated them but managed to sort of eat them (I was only 16 and a bit scared of her). Kept this up until we married after 5 years of courtship when I came clean and she never gave me another one. But she did remind me several times.

If you peel the cucumber you can eat the rind (to save waste obs) before you sit down to enjoy the sandwich! Double whammy!

What I need is a toast rack that has slats wide enough to take doorstep toast.

buy it on line Galen

My mum always used to peel the cucumber, I really don't know why. I never have as life is too short.

But it would be all squashed and compressed! Not very nice for delicate sandwiches...confused

very hard to find thin sliced, roll it with rolling pin to make it thin, used to do this for pinwheel sarnies for childrens birthdays

Fingers (I've always been awkward) and peeled. :-)

I'm British and I've never eaten a chip butty gj. As for crusts I crumb them and freeze them. Always useful.

Mmmmm......cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches. Delicious, thanks for reminding me Marmight smile

Genius can opening tip bags. grin

Crusts aren't wasted if you have chickens.

Marmight Fri 05-Feb-16 21:19:27

Cucumber with cream cheese, thinly sliced brown bread and no crusts were my Dad's 'piece de resistance' when I was a child. These days I am very partial to a tomato and marmite sandwich

We don't all like chip butties, granjura, or fish finger butties - both sound absolutely horrible to me! grin

granjura Fri 05-Feb-16 20:56:45

Cucumber sandwiches- and chip butties- at the other end of the scale, make me very aware that although I've lived all my adult life in the UK- I shall never ever be fully British, lol. I mean!

As for cutting the crusts off- I could never ever believe the waste of it all ;)
Give me crusty bread and my best local Gruyères any day. Bon appétit.

Ooh, no! I think it tastes fine as it is...

rosesarered Fri 05-Feb-16 20:06:51

Cucumber needs a shedload of salt to taste good though.

rosesarered Fri 05-Feb-16 20:06:06

Well, Ana the tea for the vicar goes with the cucumber sandwiches!Followed by madeira cake, and other goodies.
