The use of acronyms on Gransnet

Yes Merlot you're so right, it must be a slow week, and I might just liven things up a bit by saying I think there are some b****y rude and judgemental posters on this thread who are talking through their AHs. Lazy and discourteous what a plonker!

The illusion to my late MiL (that's mother-in-jaw for those too stupid to figure it out) was because she was one of those pathetic old biddies who couldn't move with the times and was Never Wrong . She insisted on calling gay people 'queers' and Asians 'pakis' (no matter what country they came from) and thought that the civilised world ended at Dover. She deplored Trades Unions (despite being poor working class, in the days when that really meant working class), thought it unacceptable that women should be doctors, that wifes should pander to their menfolk, that young folk setting up house together was 'living in sin' and refused to learn how to use a computer (the Internet is evil, that's where you learn t make bombs) and so on and on and on.

She wouldn't have liked acronyms either the old trout bless her! Her son, my OH, is getting just like her and I'm pretty fed up and feel like telling him to STFU and find something important to moan about

And, I agree! This is how GN is either do it or don't. I do get fed up with people joining and then trying to change how things are. Change might happen over time but, at the moment, lots of us use acronyms. Cope with it!

That's as may be Phoebes, but Gransnet has a list of recognised acronyms for use on this site . Not compulsory, just what we (most of us) do.
It is not lazy or discourteous to follow the practice of an organisation if you choose to join it,but it could be construed as discourteous to criticise existing members who do.
Nobody is forcing you, but as I have not read your posts on other threads I cannot comment on your own practice.

I try to put people's pseudonyms correctly (ie exactly as they do) but often give up after a few tries because a bossy autocorrect on my iPad either changes them or removes them completely.

I wouldn't use acronyms myself and just ignore them in posts. Means I don't understand who's who, but life is too short to figure them out. I just think it is lazy and discourteous to use these abbreviations and I find them intensely annoying!

Blimey! We're certainly having a plethora of moaning 'don't like' threads at the moment. As well as don't like acronyms, there's don't like being addresses as 'guys', don't like children being called 'kids' ...I might as well not log on and just listen to my GOM (Grumpy Old Man) whittering on about not liking this and can't stand that. D'you reckon it's an age thing? Or perhaps a genetic pre-disposition to age-related grumpiness? My D MiL was just the same.

IMO it's a case of some people are born grumpy, some achieve grumpiness and others gave grumpiness thrust upon them...

I notice that whenim64 doesn't have an apostrophe in her username. I don't think apostrophes would be permissible.

That is interesting. I wonder whether apostrophes are allowed in usernames? I'd have to leave and rejoin to find out - not worth all the bother, really. CBA.

D'you know what, ana as a fellow pedant it bugs me, too. But it's my username on other sites which don't allow punctuation marks in usernames.

There are times when I wish apostrophes could be abolished. It's usually when people use them with plurals. ???

(PS that's just because I'm a pedant, I'm sure it doesn't bother most people)

I just have to say that the omission of the apostrophe from your username bugs me far more than the use of acronyms on here, shestheone!

I was hopefully trying to illustrate the gap between preconceptions, in this case my own, and what I have actually found on this site, which is a varied collection of topics, experiences and personalities.

As in RL, there can be misunderstandings, comments taken the wrong way.

On another thread, Gransnet has been berated for having subjects that are too "feminine" and not gender-neutral enough!That poster would probably be annoyed that there are not enough acronyms and other evidence of GNers being all up-to-date, gender equal and internet-savvy. Can't win!

You must have missed the thread on this seasons directoire knickers. Or the one on go-faster stripes for our Zimmer frames. Or "50 Shades of Grey" washing before we shared our favourite soap powder or how to crochet your own Shreddies

All the acronyms are optional, and all parts of them are optional.

If you don't want to use DD, use D, or dd, or d, or type daughter - it is up to you what you do or don't do. No-one is going to ban you for typing the full thing. If you don't understand a post, then either ask what the poster means, look it up in the acronyms list, or ignore it.

Acronyms have been in use on here ever since the forum began. It is not the old bats getting down there with the youfs, it is how Gransnet posters communicate, and really, it is not rocket science - no more difficult than calling a personal computer a PC or a television a TV. How often do you say you will turn on the TV? Daily?

It is as it is. Should 5,000 people change an established tradition for those who are not yet familiar with it? If you join a gym, you have to learn where the changing rooms are and how to find your way from reception to the pool. Do you ask them to move everything to the car park so that you don't have to think?

But surely it's up to each of us to use/ignore acronyms on our own posts as we choose, so I can't see what the problem is. I don't think that folk really would bother which I choose to do, or maybe the gransnet police are more powerful than I thought !

"What really irritates me" isn't moaning?
There are infinitely more serious issues to irritate/annoy/depress/ exercise/concern some of us, but it clearly doesn't stop members posting, so, so what?
