The use of acronyms on Gransnet

I love Gransnet, and reading the forums every day. But what really irritates me is the constant use of acronyms. Why not just type daughter, grandson, mother-in-law etc? If we have time to read through the forums each day, surely we have time to enter the grammatical words? And why should they all be darlings? Use of the more obscure acronyms such as ICWYM, FWIW and SO mean I have to pause reading to work them out, or resort to looking them up on the list, which interrupts the flow of reading and absorbing the message.

Are we just jumping on the bandwagon of younger generations text-speak? We are not of their generation, our lives are not generally led at the same pace. Do others agree that text-speak is contributing to the damage of our language? I shall continue to make a stand when posting of using correct language as was taught to our generation. Of course this is only MHO, WDYT?

Doesn't bother me in the slightest (DBMITS) anything which makes typing faster is good (AWMTFIG) smile

Whatever happened to OG (Old Git) which was quite popular at one time? grin

Elegran Sat 13-Feb-16 18:20:06

Jiust butting in to say that cloying is in the eye of the beholder. Very often the DD can be taken to mean Dratted Daughter, Dh to mean Damned Husband and OH to mean Old Hasbeen.

Some of them are also shorthand - when posting about exchanges between different members of the family, it is much quicker to type, "DD1 said . . ." and then, "DS3 called her a ** for saying that", than to use one finger (that is how most of us type) for their full description.

Acronyms are not obligatory - neither are capitals, punctuation or perfect spelling. Posting from a mobile phone means that all these often go by the board.

I guessed someone would come up with that one, Alea. I don't really think though that anyone would struggle with the meaning of 2 for too, or 4 for four, in the way that it appears many struggle to understand the longer acronyms.
Of course we are free to use them or not. As readers are free to pass over messages containing them. And I certainly do not think my post was "moaning", but was intended to find out if others felt like me. Obviously, many do.

grin merlot!

I agree, OMG has been used verbally for quite a while now.

merlotgran Sat 13-Feb-16 18:11:32

Acronyms are creeping into RL. My DGDs often exclaim OMG when asked by their DM, my DD, to clean their rooms.

It's only a matter of time before I call out, 'DH, your lunch is ready' to which he'll probably reply WTF?

LOL

Hi GNs. FWIW TBH I think LIJTS to worry re this or AIBU? smile

I find the D for dear/darling mildly irritating, but have been happy to go with flow. As a two fingers and thumb max. typist (just one finger when holding mini iPad in one hand, as now), there is no doubt that for me DIL, GD, etc. are much more quickly typed than the full words.

IOW, GAL!

maryEJB Sat 13-Feb-16 17:57:13

I'm glad someone brought this up as at first i didnt understand acronyms and when I looked them up found the dear/darling stuff sentimental and cloying! Been trying to use them to fit in though. Im fine with IMHO andBTW as I'm already familiar with them from texts from younger members of the family. Why not just put H, S, D etc? That's what I'd say in real life. Even when people are not getti ng on well with partners or children they do the D thing which is ridiculous. Also on my iphone its very laborious to do capitals (as well as punctuation - hence all my errors!) Just discovered emojis though and love them! ?

Alea Sat 13-Feb-16 17:42:11

So how come acronyms get the thumbs down, but you are happy to employ your username 2old4hotpants?
Surely by your reckoning that should be too old for hotpants?

thatbags Sat 13-Feb-16 17:28:00

Learn some tolerance, peeps.

Ana Sat 13-Feb-16 17:26:20

It's nothing to do with 'being down with the yoof' - how ridiculous! The fact is that this is the way Gransnet was set up and no one has seriously carped about the acronyms before. They're dead easy once you get used to them...hmm

Ana Sat 13-Feb-16 17:23:08

Couldn't Care Less, kitty! grin

PetitFilou Sat 13-Feb-16 17:22:03

Thank God for your post @2old4hotpants - I thought it was just me becoming a seriously old grumpy woman (and I'm only in my early fifties so not so much of the old, thank you very much!).

The number of times I've started reading comments on a new thread and it's all DD1 this, DGS2 that, DIL3 this, DGGD4 that. Just so frustrating and seriously annoying!

In addition, if the reason behind this behaviour is just not wanting to be old fogey-like, trying to embrace it and be down with the yoof, well I’m completely lost for words and quite amused at the same time. The theory it takes longer to spell the words in full as opposed to typing acronyms in capital letters is unproven and certainly the complete opposite in my case.

At the end of the day we are all different, so something that pleases some might well turn out to be exasperating to others..!!

kittylester Sat 13-Feb-16 17:20:04

I haven't checked, but is it mostly new members who don't like acronyms. Maybe it's just a case of getting used to them. I'm not changing how I use GN now I've got the hang of it!

BTW, what is CCL? And, (thank you Ariadne!) I hesitate to ask, but what does bags one mean! grin

thatbags Sat 13-Feb-16 17:03:51

PS I don't mind people asking what certain acronyms mean. That's different. One can refer them to the "commonly used" list below or to Urban Dictionary.

thatbags Sat 13-Feb-16 17:02:16

I second what alea just said. If you prefer to type out full words, then do so, and give the same freedom of choice to everyone else that you want for yourself, which includes not moaning about their choice to use acronyms.

Why does anyone else need to know poster preferences on acronyms? Just do what you prefer and STFUAI! (rude; don't ask wink ? )

angmhay Sat 13-Feb-16 16:56:32

I agree with the original post. I prefer to type the words rather than the acronyms.

Alea Sat 13-Feb-16 16:55:57

May I refer anybody still in the dark to the "Acronyms" section at the top of the page.

This is a list of the most commonly used acronyms used on Gransnet forums. Don't feel like you have to use them if you don't want to, but they may help you understand
Please note the second sentence. smile

Alea Sat 13-Feb-16 16:52:56

Saturday afternoons?

thatbags Sat 13-Feb-16 16:50:09

What a lot of moaning. Are all yous (sic) complainers really this grumpy?

Synonymous Sat 13-Feb-16 16:32:39

I CCL how people type things out either! grin
It takes too long to type it all out sometimes and is just a form of shorthand which isn't so very difficult to work out. When you don't have much 'oomph' and even less on other days it does conserve the energy. Often tapping stuff out on my tablet is the most I can do in a whole day but I enjoy it as it makes me feel in touch with humanity. I often use the term darling so it is completely normal to me. I don't like to use acronyms when they contain 'accepted' swear words though as I find those UNacceptable. We are all very different and therefore interesting. smile

Maggieanne Sat 13-Feb-16 16:30:42

Don't like 'em!

Alea Sat 13-Feb-16 16:19:50

What I am seeing is quite a few names I have not seen before. Have the acronyms stopped people posting or are we welcoming some newer members?

Victoria08 Sat 13-Feb-16 16:17:59

Sorry, but I don't like these acronyms or abbreviation of words.
It's lazy and I find it confusing trying to work out what or who is being described. As someone previously mentioned, it interrupts the flow of reading.

Also, I never refer to my family as darlings, so seems a bit false to use that sort of language.
