How many wears to a wash?

Knickers/pants are obviously 1 wear, 1 wash, but what about trousers, tops/jumpers, cardigans etc?

Also does your DH operate on a different level? (Mr P has clean socks and pants everyday, but will sometimes wear his jeans for what seems like a week! (Possibly not, but as I don't monitor his laundry, who knows)

I'm glad I'm not the only messy eater/cook. Soup is a minefield, and anything containing tomatoes, such as pasta sauce. When cooking, it's also the kitchen floor that gets it! I change my socks daily - I have a huge selection in my sock drawer. I really need a few more bras to be able to change frequently, but twice a week is the norm. Knickers, it goes without saying, are changed daily.

Whilst out with DW, we saw a friend walking her dog, I commented "we could do with a dog, we would have to get more exercise then", DW - "I don't need a smelly old dog -- I've got you" -- charming.

Kitty, interesting, if people don't wear socks, how often do they wash their shoes ?

Pamaga Wed 30-Mar-16 08:36:51

Shirts, jumpers and bras I do after two wears. Obviously knickers daily. Jeans I wash after about three wears: I tend to wear panty pads (TMI!) to avoid any risk of smelly crotch. Skirts I sometimes hang back in the wardrobe after two days wear depending on how easy they are to wash and their colour. If I have had any spills or notice any stains then I wash them straight away. My nightclothes I tend to just shove into the machine every time I have a load so that is usually every three to four days. Think I probably wash more often than I need to but I hate the thought of being a smelly old lady!

I was talking about that to a friend and she was tel ling me that they had a bath in the kitchen, under a counter top. Her Mum used to boil water in the top loader washer and then decant it to the bath.

I change my underwear daily - I'm not sure I could wear the same knickers two days running. Having said that, I change my PJs only once a week (that has confused me no end!) I only wear socks when I wear outdoor shoes so they could last all week if I don't go out much or one day if I'm out all day. Top layer gets changed as and when though I wear 'scruffs' in the house which might get changed more often due to spillages!! grin

Going back to the 40's when I was a child, wash and bath day was once a week, sure clothes were worn until they were grubby. I'm sure BO was the norm and nobody noticed.
Washing clothes was a major job for mum, no hot water on tap, either the kitchen stove had to be lit to heat a tank of water or it was boiled up, so it wasn't the daily job it is now.

marmight sounds the same as my boarding school..though I thought we were alloed two linings a week. Our weekend Mufti clothes were dreadful by half term!!

Knickers, tights, socks, daily. Bras weekly. Jeans up to a week. Other trousers and dresses 2 days. Skirts sometimes more. - Basically anything next to the skin, i.e. t-shirts, blouses, daily. Jumpers and cardigans 2/.3 days - some, including fleeces longer.
Find /I need to 'stea'l husband's clothes for the wash - he wears a uniform so shirts, vests, pants, socks daily, but with casual clothes he NEVER puts them to the wash - I have to make the judgements! He seems to be surgically attached to ine particular fleece and pair of jeans - stained and holey - he says they are 'comfortable'!!!!!! I have to nag him when we go out to look presentable. He has lovely clothes sitting in the wardrobe!

downtoearth you put me (and I suspect others) to shame! One the face of it, laundry wise.

T-shirts once, jumpers, cardigans, dresses and skirts 3 times, unless of course something gets spilt on them.

oldgoat Tue 29-Mar-16 21:34:25

Pants and socks daily. Often get dressed in a rush in the morning and put on yesterday's discarded garments. Have felt yesterday"s pants sliding out of the leg of my trousers on more than one occasion, fortunately before I've left the house.

My nightwear is washed in the shower most days - it's called a birthday suit wink. Knickers daily, socks, tops & bras every other,; jeans about 4/5 days.

I went to a ghastly boarding school where we had clean knickers and 'linings' (thinner pair of knickers), blouse, socks, vest, in fact very thing once a week if we were lucky.. Skirt and jumper lasted until half term - no wonder I am so clean now. We must all have honked. I used to wash my socks and knickers at night in secret and hope they would dry by the morning....sheets lasted 2 weeks. And we only had one bath a week - no showers in the place shock
Sorry to diverge !

Charleygirl Tue 29-Mar-16 21:14:45

Knickers, socks, top, trousers, nightdress daily. Bra 2-3 days, cardigans and jumpers as and when necessary- I do not count.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 29-Mar-16 21:13:13

Shirts and cardis/jumpers three or four days. Have indoor trousers and outdoor trousers. Indoor ones, about four days. Outdoor ones - not sure really.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 29-Mar-16 21:10:01

I wear my bra for a week. Change it on Sundays. Knicks and socks changed every day. Nightie once a week, on Mondays when I change the bed.

TerriBull Tue 29-Mar-16 21:04:43

Underwear, socks every day, shirts/blouses / t shirts/leggings, cotton summer 3/4 length type trousers also every day, jeans about 2 to 3 wears, bras weekly. Long type of cardigans - I just don't wash them EVER shock an over garment they don't get dirty, I don't have many but if I have paid a fair bit for them I don't want them losing their shape, if they do, I get rid of them.. Husband similar to me but he washes his jumpers, which MUST be dried flat

Indinana Tue 29-Mar-16 20:36:35

Knickers and socks daily, bras/nighties every other day. Jeans/trousers probably every 4/5 wears. T-shirts every 2 wears. Jumpers every 4/5 wears, cardigans probably less frequently because I wear them over a blouse on warmer days and they're likely not kept on all day.
In summer lightweight cotton trousers and tees tend to get washed every day.
DH is pretty much the same as me.
The PiL used to stay with us from time to time, usually a long weekend from Friday to Monday. One Saturday I was putting some washing on and asked MiL if she wanted anything washed, and she brought down her undies and tights. What about Dad's undies?, I said. Oh no, they're OK, she said, he's just changed them - he puts clean ones on every Friday shock. I never asked again.

Jalima Tue 29-Mar-16 20:25:23

My machine does a 15 minute 'freshen up' wash.

tanith Tue 29-Mar-16 20:22:25

Underwear and socks every day, jeans after 4/5 days, t-shirts or Summer clothes after one wear and jumpers 2/3 wears. PJ's after a week but I only wear them for about an hour before bed then take them off for sleeping. grin
OH on a similar plan.

Tizliz Tue 29-Mar-16 20:21:47

I hand wash bras as well, they last much longer.

lynnie1 Tue 29-Mar-16 20:20:53

I wear something and then wash it. I like things to be fresh every day.. If it's a jacket or coat, I can't put it back in the wardrobe, without airing it first.
I do handwash my bra's, they keep their color and shape better.

downtoearth Tue 29-Mar-16 20:01:53

blush everything, everyday, always have, resident teenager also, dont wear anything in bed,but pjs for housework, then straight in laundry...thought every one did, never thought about it...just do lads of washing every day on a quick 15 minute 30 degree wash...hmm

rosesarered Tue 29-Mar-16 19:55:17

DH has everything clean every day and I used to be much the same, but have recently worn things more than once and the sky hasn't fallen in ( and nobody has noticed) I like clean undies and socks though.
DH changes trousers a lot because he has so many pairs and is a bit fussy about clothes.
I would wear jeans/ trousers/skirt for about 5 wears between washes and cardigans about double that.Too much washing knocks the stuffing out of clothes.I hand wash all my bras ,so they can be done as often as I like.

Ana Tue 29-Mar-16 19:36:26

Goodness - never even considered nightwear! Certainly not every day...I sleep alone and am well past the night sweats stage, thank goodness.

pompa Tue 29-Mar-16 19:34:14

Socks, pants, shirts - daily
Jeans etc 3days, depending on activity (often covered in mud with 1 wear) but, i will often have 2 or 3 pairs on the go at once.
Jumpers 4/5 wears
night things daily (or is that nightly ?)
