I really feel that if she adamantly doesn't wish to do them that you should accept her decision.

It's another subject that could be taught in school under 'sport'. I've done some basic self defence which I have used on a couple of occasions - nothing like judo or karate I hasten to add, just ways to give an impression of confidence and no mucking about. However that was some time ago and I think I need a refresher now I'm older!!

Jayem I can understand why you'd want your DGD to have self defence classes, but if she's not keen then it's a waste of worry.

Why do you consider your DGD to be in such danger that you want her to do such classes?

I can understand you offering her a chance to do these classes, especially as she can do them with an uncle, but why worry if she turns the opportunity down. Would you be bothered if she turned down a gymnastic class?

When DS was about 8 I encouraged him to do judo, for the same reason you want your DGD to do karate. It was a big mistake. He didn't enjoy the classes, I persevered too long and far from building confidence it undermined the confidence he had.

I bought one of those for DD - ear splitting!!

If she really won't do classes buy her a attack alarm - they are so loud they would waken the dead never mind scare off assailants.

DS is a karate instructor in his spare time. He runs two classes a week - one for children and young adults and the other for 'mature students' He started his club three years ago and it's now so popular there is a waiting list to join.

Some of the moves are ideal for basic self defence and they are confidence building.

You can't force her if she doesn't want to do it though.

If she's adamant that she doesn't want self-defence lessons, why are you trying to make her? Is there a particular reason?

Tell her you read an article about KIM KARDASHIAN( i cant believe i even typed that name) has started self defence lessons after being tied up and robbed in her Paris hotel room !
