Anya, what do you mean "that should have given me a clue to your gender"? It seems to me you just want an argument. I do believe lorry drivers are the best drivers on the road that is my opinion and I am entitled to it. Someone starting out now to get their class one would have to take 3 tests in 3 different sized vehicles, do a theory test and 45 hours in a class room.

The ones I know, and I know a lot, are good drivers.

I will say though, that their direction taking, is sometimes pretty abysmal!

They are illegal in Dubai too. I bought one for my son who lives there, but had to send it back.

Anya, yes, ALL lorry drivers are good drivers, if they weren't they wouldn't have been able to get behind the wheel of a truck in the first place. If that makes me delusional then so be it.

Lorries are involved in a increasing percentage of fatal traffic accidents on Britain's roads. New analysis has shown that last year HGVs were implicated in more than half of fatal motorway accidents and one-in-five fatal accidents on A-roads, continuing negative trends over the last five years.

Campaign for Better Transport, who commissioned the research, have called on Government to introduce measures to limit accidents caused by heavy lorries and make roads safer for all users.

Philippa Edmunds, spokesperson for Campaign for Better Transport said

"This new research shows lorries are involved in a high percentage of the most serious accidents on our roads and that year-on-year the problem is getting worse. The Government should be taking steps to reduce the dangers posed by lorries. They must start by abandoning wrong-headed initiatives to allow longer lorries and higher speed limits for HGVs on single carriageways."

The assessment of official statistics, carried out by the Metropolitan Transport Research Unit (MTRU) for Campaign for Better Transport, showed that the ratio of fatal road accidents involving Heavy Good Vehicles (HGVs) compared with those involving other vehicle types has been climbing year on year:

And that MTRU appear to have a green agenda?

Is there evidence that the lorry drivers were always the ones at fault?

I am saying this and care, because as I say the lorry drivers that I know are good drivers. [I would not say at all though that "white van drivers" are, sadly].
And I can barely think of an accident involving lorry drivers in the area I live at all.
Though this of course does not mean at all that other areas in the UK are problem free.

Anya, like I said in one of my earlier posts you just want an argument! I how ever do not, I have said what I wanted to say and I am done. I have better things to do with my time.

I'm not looking for an arguement but rather a discussion on this, but try explaining that to someone who refuses to engage in reasoned debate. It's one of those cases where having dug herself into an ever deepening hole the poster labels anyone disagreeing with her as 'argumentative'.

Absolutely. If you read my earlier posts I have acknowledged that there are lorry drivers who are among the best drivers on our roads. And I stand by that. So my posts were quite fair.

It's those who are texting at the wheel of a huge HGV, tailgating, exceeding their speed limits and driving hours, driving illegal and unroadworthy vehicles or generally exhibiting a 'gung ho' attitude to other road users that are the worry.

Don't understand how any responsible driver can turn a blind eye to the appalling incident in Glasgow last Christmas.

I have regularly witnessed abysmal lorry driving in France. I was hit and thrown across to the other side of the road by a French driver using his phone and swerved over the central line. He then tried to get me to write on the insurance forms, which both drivers have to sign at the time, that I was dazzled by the sun and didn't see him! Thankfully I wasn't hurt as I was practically across the road before he hit the back passenger door.
A friend in the UK had a bad accident being hit by a Spanish lorry driver.
Maybe the driving test isn't as thorough in foreign countries
and the majority of British lorry drivers are good?

Oh yes, it's only those awful foreign lorry drivers that cause all the accidents.
