depression

since my son became a new father he has terrible depression.the birth was very traumatic he says he cant bond with the baby or even love him.we dont live near to them but when we visited he was crying because he feels he is letting his wife down.my daughter in law is very supportive to him but i worry because she has so much to cope with at the moment.no one seems to talk about this subject it is breaking my heart because these are supposed to be really precious moments.can anyone help please ?

How sad and worrying for you. It sounds like he needs professional help. His GP should be the first port of call.

I agree, very sad and worrying. Did your son tend towards depression before the baby was born?
His feelings are almost like those of some women after a baby is born - post-puerperal depression. As if he was identifying with his wife. Plus enduring sleepless nights.
I'm sure he can be helped with the right treatment.

A lot of men struggle but don't like talking about it! It's important he understands he isn't alone in his feelings, men don't often bond with their children until from the age of 6. Be supportive and reassuring and encourage him to support his wife and not worry too much about the baby, it will come to him in time.
