Oh yes, Jalima - of course now I remember him being called Bertie when I have seen tv programmes about him. I was just thrown by the 'Albert'. I love recent history and was completely amazed when I realised that Queen Victoria died just 47 years before I was born. How can that be when I am so YOUNG!!
How clever of you Elrel to know that George VI's birth name was Albert. I was a little confused by your post at first but looked it up. Yes, I agree that that would make any loving father sad! But how proud he would be if he knew what an amazing queen she has been!! (IMHO)
I thought it poignant that it is said that on becoming king Albert's his biggest regret was that this so changed and constrained the future of his beloved elder daughter.
Yet she turned poor Bertie down three times. Think of queen Mary , set to marry a prince of Wales but he died so she married next in line . We are told how she adored poor Bertie but I have doubts , then there are the rumours of the turkey baster, the book which told of that was banned in the UK
For a reluctant woman she certainly enjoyed being queenie consort , I just believed the devoted to Bertie line sorry
AB I believe this was a suggestion in a docu-drama put out by BBC2 and based on something said by Lady Colin Campbell (she of I'm a Celebrity..fame) Historians have stated there is no basis in fact for the suggestion and no proof.
I have never believed the QM was so bitter to the windsors because of the abdication, I think she was lined up to marry dear David but dear David said no way . Hell hath no fury etc.
Why stop Wallis having the HRH, it wouldn't have affected the rest of them,
Yes that's true Jalima her Uncle's abdication had a profound effect on her. I think it was felt King George may have lived longer if he had not had to take over not sure if that is fact though.
Oh, Jalima of course, you are right, I hadn't taken that into consideration. I think Charles is in a difficult position though - obviously he doesn't want his mum to die but he must be wondering how old he will be when he becomes King (if he ever does become King - my darling dad always said he never will reign??)
Yes Christine Good Luck to them BOTH! Elizabeth II is a great Queen and Philip has supported her throughout her reign. However I do feel that she should abdicate and let Charles become King.
