Really hoping for the best outcome for you all. My friend had a baby at 26 weeks - he was just under 2lb & is now a strapping 15 year old doing wonderfully well at school & loves his sport.

My gorgeous granddaughter was born and put in prem ICU immediately last year. She was there for several weeks. The staff were just fantastic. My niece is expecting a multiple birth (C section booked at 36 weeks but they doubt she'll get that far), and my granddaughter's ICU experience, and that she is so big and strong now, has allayed some of my niece's fears, she told me this week. Your family will be in safe hands.

Absolutely normal for a woman experiencing problems in pregnancy to be transferred to a 'tertiary' centre i.e. a fully equipped obstetric hospital that serves a wide area, so whilst you are of course worried sick, she and the baby will be in the best possible hands.
I don't know where in the country DD is, but if she is in the South West/ Wales area and gets transferred to St Mike's Bristol, just shout and they'll be a bed for you here if you need it x

lindylou i am looking at a photo of my DGD, who a stranger would never realise she was born 7 weeks early and with a tumor at the base of her spine, her coxycc was removed when she was days old.She is so healthy and so active.
I will never forget the terror i felt before her birth and i know you will be feeling it too but stay strong and have faith. thoughts are with you and your family

Friend's baby arrived at 24 weeks 5 days weighing 1lb 3oz. She's now 4 and at nursery doing fine. Will keep everything crossed for you and your family. Thinking of you

My twin grandson's (IVF) were born at 26 weeks by emergency ceaserian. They weighed 1lb 10 oz and 2.lb 03. They were in hospital for approx 5 months and there were many worrying moments but now aged 3 they are doing fine.

Ex SiL was born at 25 wks in the back of his dad's car on the way to hospital. That was 1985. So another message of hope.
Baby will need extra care of course but medical science is wonderful.

And here's another! Friend of a friend had her daughter at 24 weeks 3 days (in Netherlands). Policy is that if pregnancy goes to 24 weeks they pull out all the stops -so 27 weeks is well within their 'safety zone'.
She's now a tall gangly 12 yr-old and we hope to visit in July.'
I agree about the hospital with expertise.

I've been there myself and with my daughters baby,if they've given her steroids it will mature the babies lungs and give him/her a better chance IF he comes early.My daugher was 5cms dilated when she first was admited and they managed to keep her thet way for 3 weeks .Every day in the womb is a bonus,my grandaughter was born small but perfect and is a happy sometimes cheeky 6 year old.Back 29 years and I had no steroids ,my boy was born at 28weeks and 4 days ,he weighed just 2and a half pounds ,he spent his first 11 weeks in SCBU and came home weighing 4pounds 13 ounces ...he's still a skinny thing at 29 but hes been a healthy boy all his life .the treatments available nowadays are far superior to what he had then so you can be causiously optimistic all will be well.You'll be in my thoughts

lindylou I can give you some optimistic news!!!

My nephew was 2lb when born -I can't remember how many weeks he was but I do know that my sister who was suffering from preclampsia was pushed for longer than they would have preferred in order to ensure the baby had a chance of survival. His head was the size of a tennis ball!!

Now he is 26 with a Masters degree and off to Japan next week with a couple of friends!!

So do not give in to despair. I would push for the option of a hospital with expertise and if it's an hour away -so be it.

Lindylou57 what a horribly anxious time. I hope for a good outcome for your daughter and grandchild. Is there a trusted friend or family member who can support you as well us here on gransnet. I think sharing these terrible life events helpful both in real life and virtually really helpful. I've no advice but here's a virtual hand to hold.

Oh Lindylou57 I can't begin to imagine what you must be going through today.

27 weeks is very soon but the survival rates are still very good so try to stay positive (I appreciate it must be very hard for you).

I believe they are sometimes able to keep the pregnancy going on a day by day basis (I have a friend who went through a similar thing) and every day does make a difference.
