Washed it and it's now clean and still crackly, hooray!

Thanks for all replies, might give it a short wash and see how it turns out before I put it in the next charity bag. Think it needs more than a surface wash but otherwise its in good nick.x

Therefore not to be used on a DGD, Nellie.

I would have thought that a steamer is a heck of a lot hotter than a gentle wash. Steamers are around boiling 100C

I machine wash all the mats, soft toys, dolls and rattles etc from the toddler group, even if they say sponge wash only. They all seem to survive and still rattle/jingle/crackle etc afterwards, I wouldn't be-confident that they would be clean with just a surface sponge wash.

My DD washed her crackly mat the week after DGD after baby had wee on it, came up a treat!

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to put it in the washing machine - perhaps in a large wash bag on a low temperature and a small amount of whatever you use, powder, gel etc. I have a quick 15 minute wash on my machine.

What are the crackles made of I wonder?

Do you really mean that, Elainel?
Was your DGD that dirty?

I machine washed one recently, it was being passed from set of GCs to their cousin. All crackles survived.

What about a quick soak (handwash)? I do that sometimes if I think the washing machine cycle is too much ...

Ah right, thanks

The one we had was not washable, it said sponge off any spillage.

Advice please, Grans. You know those baby mats with pockets or bits that have crackly stuff in them? I want to pass my gc's one on but it's a bit grubby. Can I bung it in the washing machine or does that ruin them? Any tips welcome
