What is your hall like?

I'm itching to redo ours which is currently done in a very traditional way. It is not naturally very brightly lit, quite wide and currently contains a Georgian desk and chair, a chest of drawers and a grandfather clock.

Love your dresser coconut - wish I had the space - one day when I become a millionaire!

Very small and papered by the previous owner in horrible wall-paper meant to resemble a brick wall!

I shall paint it as soon as I can find money for paint.

PECS I like your style.
grin
DD has just moved house and now has a porch. The cottage she was in was a But&Ben opening straight into the kitchen/living room with nowhere to put boots or buggy apart from the kichen floor.
She was so excited when she saw the new house!!

We don't even have a hall as such. In our old cottage everyone used the back door, which opens onto a small lobby with 5 doors off it. Just room for old chest of drawers housing shoes, with cat bed on top.

I realise the boots, shoes and slippers scattered in front of the shoe baskets in the hall cannot be seen in the photo I posted???

A mess

NanaandGrampy, that Dulux light reflecting paint is really good, I've used it in a couple of rooms as large trees cast shade on some windows. My son-in-law ( a talented artist ) was so impressed he decorated his whole 1950's house with the white one. WOW!

I live in a bungalow so there are many doors. I just counted and there are ten! My hallway also has remained neglected for twenty five years at least. The big black mat is one of those water absorbing ones to protect the rest of the house from twelve doggy paws. The mats only come in black. I got the incredibly long runner to stop children and dogs from slipping on the shiny oak floor. I keep promising at least to refresh the white emulsion and paint over the border as I do that but the years still roll by... I could have made a start this morning. I'm not doing anything else... (Bone Idle and Procrastination are my middle names!)

"my hall is tiny! it has the stairs running from it plus three doors."
That's what ours is like, Lupatria.
There's a cupboard with the gas meters etc where we hang our coats and put outdoor shoes. No room for anything else.

Lupatria Thu 03-Jan-19 12:23:42

my hall is tiny! it has the stairs running from it plus three doors. there is an under stairs part which has been filled up with a breakfast bar my daughter bought and then has no use for so you can't get to the shelves around the walls which hold my cds, dvds and videos.
in the summer after doing various bits and pieces in the garden i'm hoping the breakfast bar will go into my greenhouse so it can be used. after four years we're still trying to find space to put everything my daughter and two grandaughters brought with them when my daughter's marriage ended. i intend to claim back my hall so it looks welcoming again. and maybe freshen up the paintwork as well.

My hall is Z shaped painted white and oak floored. Hanging on the wall facing the front door is a canvas of "The Three Graces" (Liverpool waterfront for those of you who would not recognise it) Liver Building, Cunard Building and The Customs House (as was) or Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. I was brought up in a leafy suburb of Liverpool and worked there, although I have been living here in Conwy for 47 years consider myself a Scouser - no people like them, friendly, kind and generous with a marvellous sense of humour.

My hall is long and L shaped, as well as being full of doors (9!) and narrow.
So, not much to say about it really, except the doors are awful as well.
It has a few bits and pieces up on the walls, and a big untidy bookcase. blush

PECS Thu 03-Jan-19 12:18:52

A bit untidy!

Saggi Thu 03-Jan-19 12:10:55

I'm like you Greysuster ....door opens onto 4x4 lobby which just about holds 5 coat pegs and a shoe rack.... I'd love a bigger hall like when I was a child. Brought up in a council house with large rooms and a decent size hallway which held the staircase... A big hall stand...a half table ( where the phone sat)...and an understands loo. Can't swing a cat in these modern semi's.

aggie Thu 03-Jan-19 12:09:29

looking the other way

aggie Thu 03-Jan-19 12:07:50

My Hall is long and dark unless I leave the light on . I got a cupboard for half way up to break it up , then a small table at the front door . Most people come round the back to the patio doors !

gillgran Thu 03-Jan-19 12:05:09

I have "hall-envy", our hall, stairs & landing badly need decorating. The main problem is that the wooden railings, (pine, I think, ) are still the original 1980's varnish & now look dated, & rather "orange"..!! We can not stretch to new railings, anyone think that they could be painted.? Ideas ? please.

Nanannotgrandma Thu 03-Jan-19 11:57:47

Janeainsworth left your name off my red floor tile post ?

Brunette10 Thu 03-Jan-19 11:57:10

Standing on my head glammanana - looks good though smile

Nanannotgrandma Thu 03-Jan-19 11:56:12

I am just having a porch built, I love those red floor tiles. Going to have them in mine

glammanana Thu 03-Jan-19 11:53:28

Woops my hallway has gone upside down hmm

glammanana Thu 03-Jan-19 11:52:40

My hall is small compared to most but I make the most of it by having it decorated in light colours and a large mirror over the radiator to reflect the light.

Willow10 Thu 03-Jan-19 11:49:37

Hall envy here too! My 'hall' is just big enough to open the front door. I have to stand on the bottom of the stairs to let anyone in!

Pippa22 Thu 03-Jan-19 11:37:23

Your tall vase of flowers look very vulnerable. Wouldn’t last 5 minutes in my house Willow, let alone at the side of stairs ! Stairs are for leaping from arent they ? !
