What did you wear in 1975/76

I am writing a book and I posted a few months ago asking for advice about pregnancy in the mid-1970s. Please may I take this opportunity to thank everyone who took the time to reply. I very much appreciate it.

Now, I was 19 in 1975 and can remember some of the outfits of what I wore, but the thing is, I was quite a bit overweight then. I remember wearing long dresses in 1975, with a choker. Or a long skirt with a skinny ribbed top, which looking back, didn't do me any favours at all! I also remember wearing the "new" midi skirt? Or maybe that was earlier, I honestly can't remember. I don't have any photos of me from that era.

What I would like to know is what did YOU wear in 1975/76 for an evening out? I don't think disco became popular until maybe 1997, with Saturday Night Fever, did it? However, I may be totally wrong. I didn't go to many discos when I was younger, I met my ex-husband at our local Palais! I remember the white suit John Travolta wore, and I remember my ex-husband wearing a cream version in the early 1980s. (We lived in a small town in the North West of England, so maybe he was just behind the times!)

Would any of you be prepared to share your experience of going to a disco in the mid-1970s? What did you wear? What did your boyfriend wear? The two female characters in my book are totally different. One is tall, slim, stunningly beautiful and the other (based on myself) is short, a bit mousy and slightly overweight. What do you think the more popular girl would have worn? Would hot pants still be in fashion then? I vaguely remember when I first started work in 1974, aged 18, that an older girl wore them to work and was told off. I'm sure she wore them in the evening though. Could I be right?

As I say, I can only go off my own experience, and that is wearing long dresses and skirts, I suppose to hide my shape at the time.

I remember my boyfriend at the time having long David Cassidy like hair and wearing flared jeans, so I can imagine what my characters' boyfriends would wear. However, I'm at a loss as to how the girls would dress at the time.

Any advice would be much appreciated, particularly by all the grans who were the "cool" girls in the mid-1970s! I wasn't, by the way!

I wore maxi skirts or dresses for evenings out and midi skirts during the day.

I gave up wearing mini dresses when an elderly gentleman patted my bottom in the public library! I didn't know him from Adam, I may say.

Yes, concert t's, Levi jeans and cheap sneakers, flannel shirts, body suits, clogs, waffle thermals, hoodies under denim jackets, cut offs in the summer months, overalls, halters ...

I liked disco, still do, but but the subculture was a dark scene, incredibly depressing, drug-driven, careless lifestyle ...

So ...it was many general admission shows for me, with "my people" .. But plenty of small venues too .. Bands had to start out somewhere ...

here in the states disco refers to the dance and songs like the ones in saturday night fever(1977) kc and the sunshine band, gloria gaynor, donna summer etc.polyster clothes ruled there.fluttery latin style dresses (knee length) and dance shoes.
places that you could dance to rock were just called bars or clubs.
being a rockers(and allergic to polyester) we hated disco.
but it started up as a fad around 1975.
we wore "gunnie sax" dresses, poet shirts, rockabilly dresses ,bell or straight legged levis, tall boots, and rock and roll t shirts.
obviously fashion was a little different here.not much but a bit.

I can 't remember what I wore in the mid 70s .I was a young mum with two children. I can remember what they wore, but nothing specific to myself. Strange that.

In 1974 I was still wearing very short minis but by 75/76 skirts had become knee length. In the evenings we still wore maxi skirts/dresses. Trousers were wide flares and shoes were platform soles. Blouses had long puffed sleeves, wide cuffs and big collars. Hot pants were from a few years earlier. I bought most of my clothes in Top Shop.
Google images will give you a good idea of styles from then.

I got wed in 1977 so in 1975 we were still going to discos and following fashion trends. I remember wearing mini skirts , grey with yellow checks, brown printed corduroy with flowers on all worn with skinny rib short sleeved jumpers in various pastel colours. Pinafore dresses worn with shirts with huge cuffs and rounded collars. I remember one being white with big bright humble bees on it.
I had a fabulous brown leather Barbarella jacket that I wore til it fell off me . Shoes were always strappy platform soles but then I found the Ravel shoe shop and went a little more sophisticated and got some brown leather rounded toed shoes with three straps and tiny round buttons to fasten them with and 3 or 4 inch heels and no platform soles.
My boyfriend , now my husband , wore Oxford bag trousers with wide waist bands and tight tops but I honestly cannot remember if he wore shirts or teeshirts , shall have to sort out some photos.
At the discos we went to we listened to and danced to plenty of Tamla motown. Rod Stewart ,Bay city rollers, Roxy music, Barry White. As someone has all ready said we always wore a coat or jacket and handed it in at the cloakroom and were given a ticket to get your coat back when you left. My tipple at the time was brandy and babycham with a cherry and my then bf said to me once "that's the last you have of them it's gone up to 42 pence" .

Very short maternity dresses in various floral patterns my mil must of been horrified at the shortness of them.

freesia Wed 01-May-19 09:09:39

wooden platform clogs....how did we dance in them? And Ben Sherman cheesecloth shirts. Also had a 'twinset' of pullover and cardigan with diamond pattern on...skinny rib of course!

annodomini Wed 01-May-19 08:41:47

I confess to a long blue caftan-style dress (from M&S) which I wore for dinner parties and other social events. I shudder at the memory.

mumofmadboys Wed 01-May-19 08:41:27

Ben Sherman shirt, black velvet jacket, long Laura Ashley dress

LullyDully Wed 01-May-19 07:55:49

Oh yes, and cheesecloth tops with little mirrors in the design.

labazsisslowlygoingmad Wed 01-May-19 07:48:02

i was only a youngster then but i managed eventually to get my mum to agree to me having a halter neck top. i think it must be around this time i was mad over the bay city rollers so had a full outfit tartan and all!

Sar53 Wed 01-May-19 07:31:49

I remember wearing a long dark green velvet skirt with a black long sleeved t shirt, the sleeves were very wide at the ends. I had a pair of flared denim jeans with red stars on them. I wore silver platform boots, oh the memories !!!
I was married in 1974, in a registry office, and wore a long Laura Ashley dress and a white floppy hat. Those were the days.

NfkDumpling Wed 01-May-19 06:47:17

Tiered Laura Ashley dresses which gathered under the bust as I was pregnant much of the 70s! Other times cheesecloth tops with variously coloured denims.

This photo was taken in 1975. It’s Mum and me buying fish in Kowloon City market.
Mum is wearing a pretty ordinary patterned shirtwaist dress and I’m wearing a sort of paisley patterned shirt in t-shirt material. I’m pretty sure I was wearing my purple loon pants with it grin

janeainsworth Wed 01-May-19 02:11:29

In 1975 I’d lived in Hongkong for a year.
A lot of the time it was hot and humid, so I didn’t wear very much.
I do remember a pair of really wide-legged pale blue denim trousers that I bought from a boutique called Birds, not long after we arrived. Teamed with cheesecloth tops and t-shirts from market stalls, where was a never-ending supply of over-runs and samples from the factories that supplied shops in the U.K. and Europe.
Another buy from Birds was a black gathered midi skirt with a dipped hem in a silky fabric, that I wore all the time with various tops and which made it to the dressing-up box years later.
In the winter months I had a Donegal tweed jacket and skirt which I had made in a tailoring class at night school and which I wore on the flight out to Hongkong. I thought I was the bees knees grin

It wouldn't have been a 'disco' but we did go to quite a few 'do's' and I would have worn maternity clothes! I remember making a dress from Laura Ashley fabric.

paddyann Tue 30-Apr-19 22:01:51

trouser suits and crepe blouses for work and a Donegal tweed suit taht I lusted over but couldn't afford until my lovely boss got fed up of me talking about it and handed me the cash plus enough for a lovely green tie neck blouse ..all from Richard Shops in Sauchiehall St .I had that suit for years ,it had a midi length a line skirt and I loved it .I rarely wore jeans and bought dresses and skirts from Chelsea Girl ,patchwork suede was a favourite with skinny rib jumpers and strappy high heeled platform sandals .I got married in 75 and I was 21 .My dress was chiffon over satin with a lace trim, high neck and long sleeves I didn't wear a veil.hated them I wore a small jewelled Juliet cap on its own on my page boy hair cut

By 1975 I`d been married for 12 years and had 5 kids, so discos were out of the question. The only dances I went to were hubby`s annual works do, one I remember was a straight black skirt, normal length, with a gold lame blouse borrowed off my SIL, plus black high heels. Another year it was a dress my mother made me, fairly straight, long sleeves and high neck, shiny material in pink and blue stripes, sounds awful, but the colours sort of merged into each other, it was quite nice.

FlexibleFriend Tue 30-Apr-19 21:41:03

I've never owned a maxi dress and hated the smell of patchouli oil. I can't be certain but I think 1975 I was wearing oxford bags with a tiny waistcoat, long suede coat and platforms. I was 21 and single and clothes mad.

KatyK Tue 30-Apr-19 21:17:55

Maxi dresses for parties!

KatyK Tue 30-Apr-19 21:17:29

White jeans, cheesecloth shirts, fabulous platform shoes, skinny rib jumpers, I had a green suede full length coat. I loved clothes and had loads. I was tall and slim and I loved every minute of it. smile

Just reading these posts bring back so many memories

I left home to live with 20 other girls in 1970, we all used to go to a rather seedy club within easy walking distance, where girls got in free! Getting ready seemed to take forever, lots of glittery eye shadow, Mary Quant or Biba, false eye lashes, my friend used to iron my hair to make it dead straight!

We all favoured different styles, I wore long, often trailing on the ground, cheesecloth dresses, often barefoot, my best friend wore tiny hot pants and platform shoes, day wear, loons, in every colour, grandad style T-shirt’s.

I also remember a couple of years later, discovering Laura Ashley, which was of course totally different than it is now. I also loved a shoe shop called Sascha, very high. Wooden platforms, with brightly coloured suede tops

It was a time when almost anything was ok, I also remember wearing the tiniest skirts, and white PVC boots, with a red midi PVC raincoat!

What a lovely wander down memory lane I feel quite nostalgic, I may go and listen to a bit of Maggie May

I remember flared jeans and platforms, and velvet blazers, and buying the occasional thing in Biba when they moved into the larger store in Kensington High Street. I think I wore ribbed jumpers with short sleeves over long voluminous sleeved shirts I'd bought there, crepe material, they had rounded collars, long cuffs with lots of tiny buttons. I had a range of different length skirts, mini, midi, maxi. At some stage in the '70s straight jeans came in again, but I can't remember when, I recall meeting a friend of mine who was bang on trend and was a model for a while, meeting me wearing them and immediately feeling my flares were all a bit passe, I also remember those baggy slouchy boots, because I bought a pair in a Russell and Bromley type shoe shop and they cost me an arm and a leg. I was a bridesmaid mid 70s and we got our dresses from Laura Ashley, very floral....and yes oil of Patchouli if we were going to a concert.

Evie64 Tue 30-Apr-19 20:34:03

Oldgimmerl, OMG! Patchouli. What a blast from the past!
