Experiences of changing from a washing machine with a hand wash programme to one without?

Hello all. My LG washing machine has died and I would like to replace it, but I’m upset to find out that the new ones don’t have a hand wash programme, unless you pay more (and I’m not even sure they do then). Is there anyone who used to use this programme but had to change to a new machine without it? What do you think, if so? Is it OK just using other programmes like Delicates and Wool? Thank you.

I think all these machines have hand wash function ... sorry the link is so long

I've never had this facility on any washers I've had until the new one which I've just bought - it's a Candy. Not used the programme yet though so can't comment on how good it is.

This is something I must watch out for. I wear a lot of wool and silk so need that hand wash programme.

Thank you, Tanith. I was hoping to stay with LG as I really liked my old machine, and it was very reliable for over 10 years. That’s why I was wondering about changing my habits and doing without a hand wash programme. Still thinking though.

Skye17 there are 13 machines there that do have the hand wash facility.

My machine is a Samsung and as well as having a handwash programme it plays a pretty tune to tell you when it has finished

I'm not sure there is much difference between 'hand wash' and 'delicate' cycles. perhaps talk with the sales person, or check the websites of the machines you have short listed as potential purchases.

I normally use the delicate or wool programmes and wash at 30C. Everything's been ok so far.

tanith Thu 08-Aug-19 07:12:32

Sorry I meant to say there are 13 LG machines there with hand wash cycles

Daisymae Thu 08-Aug-19 08:30:14

Yes, I would use a delicate or wool program

the majority of machines have a delicate or gentle wash programme without a spin cycle. Once the cycle has finished you can always chose a low spin cylce if so desired.

I use this option on my machine and it is an Indesit

Witzend Thu 08-Aug-19 08:46:06

Don't they mostly have a 'delicates' program, which is about the same thing?
I still hand wash various woollen jumpers, but give them a good spin afterwards.

delicate is longer than hand wash and is not as gentle. Most have a wool wash which is equivalent to a hand wash. Depends on the garment of course, some say hand wash to cover themselves eg I would put more delicate items in a wash bag to give more protection. Bras, I wash in a wool wash but not in a delicate wash

Thank you very much, everyone.

My Hotpoint machine doesn't have a hand wash programme. When I want to wash something delicate I put a little detergent in the drum and set it to rinse only. Unless the item is stained the results are fine.

Skye17 Fri 09-Aug-19 10:53:34

That is interesting, shysal, thank you.

Tanith, thank you for the clarification. I have gone through the list and found an LG I might buy, so that was helpful. I should have looked on ao.com.

For some reason that one doesn’t have an extra rinse feature, so now I need to do more research on machines and maybe decide which is most important, hand wash or extra rinse.

Sometimes I feel every time I buy something it gets more complicated!

If something says hand wash I hand wash and would never expect it on a washing machine. Most of the complex programmes on new washing machines are never used. Most people have 3 or 4 which they use and not the others - waste of technology really and probably pushes prices up.
