You have all been so kind I do feel better now he’s done his 1st day As you said Patticake 123 He looked so small with a huge backpack on
I don’t remember being so worried with my own children .

Life is so different from when I was small. My first day at school my mum took me. After that I went with my next door neighbour's daughter who was only a year older than me! My younger brother was only ever taken by me.

There was a boy who cried for ages on my first day. I still remember his name and always associate that name with being a wimp! Everyone else was fine.

Oh I feel for you. My own grandson, born at 27 weeks began preschool two years ago. The schoolbag was nearly as big as him and compared to the other children he was tiny. Fast forward two years, he’s ready fluently, has lots of friends and was really looking forward to going back to school earlier this week. So he’ll be fine, it’s you that needs the TLC!

I'm glad he was fine. Of course you were concerned, colournanny - that's what mums, and especially grans, do.

I remember my first day at school, about 74 years ago. The kids were taken into the classrooms by their mums, who then left, and we could see them waving through the windows. I was sat next to a little boy who started crying when he could no longer see his mum. I thought he was a real baby. Where have the years gone, as I have read many times on Gransnet?

It’s important to socialise and explore with others at this age. He’ll be fine and whilst you worry he’ll be having a great time!!! The first 3 years experiences are especially important for your little one; get the enjoyable ones in there!

I think it's worse for GPs than for parents. They at least are pleased to get some time to themselves. GPs just worry. He will be fine of course and you will adjust. If you are feeling at a bit of a loose end sometimes pre-schools appreciate offers of help.

colournanny, I'm desperate for my daughter to let my grandson go to nursery (he's 1 1/2) but she doesn't want to (her choice, I know).

Developmentally, it is SO important that children are with their peers, ideally without parents around.

colournanny I don't think you are over protective at all (is it even possible when they are so little?)

You are a wonderful, loving grandma who cares deeply about the wee fledgling who is so very precious to her.

Nothing wrong with that as far as I can see.

I am so glad he came out smiling; it's a wonderful introduction to going to 'big school' - he'll gain a lot of confidence over the next few years.

Thankyou everyone. He is 3 years old. He came out smiling which relieved me no end.
I know I’m over protective but it’s because he had a huge struggle when born, he has done so well though. I’m very proud of him

He will be fine. My little granddaughter started pre-school as well. It was just her mum and grandma all this time. But she is fine and has settled in well.

I work in preschool room he will have time to settle choose activities and feedback will always be there. Use your precious time with him encouraging talk and being positive about his new environment and new friends he will make.

Take a deep breath! He will be fine, you need a hobby that is not your grandson.grin

Willow500 Fri 06-Sep-19 11:45:55

I'm sure he'll be fine - how old is he? It will possibly be a bigger wrench to you and his parents than to the child himself as it's the first sign they're becoming more independent. There may be a few tears (on both sides) but I'm sure he'll soon settle down and start to develop much faster mixing with his contemporaries. Try not to be too anxious as he may pick up on this and worry too.

Good luck!

Hi all, please will someone reassure me that my beautiful grandchild will be ok at his 1st day at pre school?
He has only been looked after by his parents & me since he was born. He had a real struggle when he was born very prematurely I know I am very over protective with him & I know going to ore school will be so good for him so why do I feel so anxious?
