For the last month I haven't been well so my usual routine of going for a swim between 8 to 9 has been cancelled. It's quite nice to be able to stay in bed until after 9 and I have been spending the mornings reading the paper and watching tv. It will be hard to get back into my old routine.

Both retired so any time between 8 and 9.
We take turns making tea then bring it back to bed. I get up after the news or when I’ve caught up with GN.
OH takes ages if he gets in the bathroom first so no need for me to rush.

I looked forward to years to retirement and being able to get up when I wanted.

The reality is that if I don't get up at seven or thereabouts I have a blinding headache all day. The days of sleeping all forenoon are definitely over.

The thought of sleeping in would do my head in. I rise about 4am and back in bed by 1030pm. I find the 4am start for the day is perfect, can tread the newspaper in peace, the washing goes on as does the dryer and ready to walk out the back doormat 530am and start my days with my rescued livestock. I have been retired for a number of years and until I started collecting animals was bored. I do have a quiet time where I sit down for about 2 hrs in middle of day, but I am catching up on the family gossip and doing emails

I always imagined lolling abed once I’d retired, possibly until mid morning, but it simply hasn’t happened!

All those years of getting to work by 8am seem to have diminished my lolling abilities to the point now that I’m always up by 9am even on days when I’m not trotting to the gym - I feel cheated!

I go to bed at around 11pm and wake without fail between 3 and 4am. I try to stay in bed for a while but get up between 4.30 and 5. I then have a read in the bath to pass some time before walking the bulk of my 10,000 daily steps. I know that this is not considered to be sufficient sleep, so I tend to have '40 winks' during the day or while watching Masterchef, which is the main programme that makes me nod off!

I have been an early riser all my life and did a morning newspaper round in my teenage years.

Heating comes on at 8am so whatever time I wake up I watch tv till after 8am then get up. After reading some of your posts I might start nipping downstairs and making a coffee to take my first tablet, then going back to bed. If I wait till I get up to take my tablet I have to wait an hour before I can eat. Thanks for the tip.

Trying to train myself to stop thinking that it not good to sleep in until nearly 9. After all I am retired! I woke just after 8.30 today.

Framilode Thu 21-Nov-19 09:59:14

I was up at 5 today as the dog on my bed was making me feel cramped. I will have a zizz this afternoon and go to bed about 10.30.

merlotgran Thu 21-Nov-19 09:59:14

The dogs wake us up at 7am. I used to take a cup of tea back to bed but now I stay up, read the papers online and watch a bit of breakfast telly before getting on with some housework.

No alarms for me (unless I have to get up early for something specific). My alarm clock is my bladder! If I’m doing a loo trip before 7am I pop back into bed for another hours sleep. Generally though I’m awake around 7.30 to 8 am. Once I’m awake properly I get up and go downstairs in my dg where I spend a leisurely hour (or two) just getting into the day.

My DH on the other hand is up any time after 4.30am. Unlike me he struggles to get back to sleep after toilet trip. At least he doesn’t make a noise to wake me up!

timetogo2016 Thu 21-Nov-19 09:57:44

I get up at 6-45 but wake up between 4 & 5 ARRRGH.

Hetty58 Thu 21-Nov-19 09:57:18

Alima, even I feel that 4 am is a bit too early! Yes, Piriton help (I take them for allergies) but melatonin gummies are even better.

Worthingpatchworker Thu 21-Nov-19 09:56:50

Phew.....thank you for posting this. I worked shifts and hated the early one.
Now I get up when I am ready. When I wasn’t well.....it’s be late...in the summer the warmth and sunshine calls to me....so up earlier.
It doesn’t matter. You are retired. You don’t have to....
That is my mantra.....you don’t have to.
Enjoy yourself.

I've never been one to leave my bed willingly, but since the clocks changed I've been managing to go to bed by 11.30pm and get up at 8am. I was running an hour later before which is too late really. I must have my eight hours. I can't sit in bed eating, drinking, reading or browsing. I'm either asleep or out of bed.

Gonegirl Thu 21-Nov-19 09:53:02

Yes, it's the daft guilt that spoils it isn't it silverlining48.

FlexibleFriend Thu 21-Nov-19 09:52:44

I set my alarm for 9am and get up straight away, laying in longer really isn't fair on the dogs. That said I usually go to bed around 11pm.

annsixty Thu 21-Nov-19 09:51:26

After years of being up early and for some time having to get my H ready for the carers I now stay in bed as long as I like, it can be any time between 8:30/9:30 and I no longer feel guilty.
This morning it was 7 as my cleaner comes every two weeks and gets to me at 7:45.

silverlining48 Thu 21-Nov-19 09:46:39

I am still in bed but feeling guilty.....smile

Bathsheba Thu 21-Nov-19 09:42:32

Depends what sort of night I've had. Often up around 6.30-7.00, but if I've had a bad night then I turn over and go back to sleep till 8.30 ish.

Teetime Thu 21-Nov-19 09:41:13

We are similar awake about 6, cup of green tea, reading, messages, Classic FM on radio etc usually get up about 8 am unless something more exciting is happening.{grin]

Gonegirl Thu 21-Nov-19 09:37:22

Anytime between 8.30 and 10 past 9. I like my bed. Would hate to get up really early. Too grey and cold.

Buttonjugs Thu 21-Nov-19 09:36:07

My youngest son has ASD and the only way to get him to exercise is to take him swimming. I work part time and he prefers being at the pool by 7am for lane swimming. I get up at 6 most days and actually quite like it.

Alima Thu 21-Nov-19 09:33:23

Heavens, I envy those of you able to sleep! Definitely regard 6.00 as a lie in. Lately my waking time is around 4 am. Recently discovered accidentally that Piriton tablets make me sleep till around 6.

kittylester Thu 21-Nov-19 09:28:41

We always wake around 6 - years of alarms at 5.45. One of us makes tea and we have a couple of mugs in bed planning the day, watching the news and on our phone. Usually actually get up about 7.30 but it could be 9.30!

Whitewavemark2 Thu 21-Nov-19 09:26:52

About 6am but knackered by 9pm
