We're really happy to read threads like this and know that the site is hitting the mark with you. But we also know that for all of you who are regular posters, there are many more who, for whatever reason, haven't yet joined in on the discussions and we wondered what could be done to make the site more welcoming to newbies? If you are new (or can remember back to when you were) what barriers do you think users may come across that stop them from joining in the chat? And if you are a lurker (although we prefer to think of you as reader) if you're happy to post just this once to let us know what stops you usually, we'd really appreciate it. Any insight you can give us be most welcome and rewarded with a virtual bottle of wine grin
Thanks
GNHQ

Glad to help Marydoll hope you are feeling a little better now.

Nothing like a bit of light relief sometimes is there Gaunt47 keep smiling smile

Callistemon Sun 26-Jan-20 15:14:30

Now not ow

We're all different paddyanne, so it's interesting to see different views and it would be very odd if we all agreed all of the time.
We'd be like Stepford Wives.

Callistemon Sun 26-Jan-20 15:11:33

Every time I see you post ow I think of Anne of Green Gables!

Gaunt47 Sun 26-Jan-20 15:10:36

Sorry, but I'm not going to apologise for having a bit of fun. There was no intention to derail the thread. And it wasn't, it's still going strong.

paddyanne Sun 26-Jan-20 15:07:39

yes Callistemon, now with an e ,but probably be gone again soon.I kept an eye on a couple of posters who were having a rough time to see if things worked out for them and wanted to post support so came back.Lurking though may be the way for me ,I certainly dont feel I fit with the "grans" on here in many ways .

Marydoll Sun 26-Jan-20 14:52:47

Thanks Sodapop, it did cheer me up.

an attempt to derail the thread because they did not like it.,

Well I have to dispute that! I was enjoying reading the thread, before any derailment occured. It was interesting and enlightening to read the various perceptions of GN.

As one of the ringleaders, may I say: Me culpa, mea maxima culpa. My apologies if anyone was offended by my Scottish sense of humour, it wasn't intended to upset at all.

Maggiemaybe Sun 26-Jan-20 13:28:02

So....

English humour, excluding people but pretending that it's all innocent, a attempt to derail the thread because they did not like it.

What the actual .......? Do you think we know each other then? And that we're all English? Did you not see our earnest and honest answers earlier in the thread?

And we wonder why people are reluctant to post.

I'm glad it cheered you up a bit anyway, Marydoll, and hope you're feeling better now.

Hi Pantglas2 I have posted about 4 times since then, that's all. Nothing too exciting, but thanks for the kind thought. smile I will keep at it, as suggested.

sodapop Sat 25-Jan-20 15:31:02

Ok I give in. Sorry the thread was derailed, we were just trying to make light of the times we felt ignored or managed to close a thread.

Pantglas2 Sat 25-Jan-20 15:19:45

Hello seacliff! I’ve been keeping an eye out for you on other threads I post and read but haven’t spotted you dipping a toe in the water yet!

seacliff Sat 25-Jan-20 14:20:50

Agreed Rafichagran.

rafichagran Sat 25-Jan-20 13:17:12

I now think this thread is a waste of time. I have a dry sense of humour, but I think we have gone away from the question, and as the poster upthread said tedious.
One poster said about having a sense of humour by pass, that line is normally said by bullies who are taking the p... and no they are not clever. They pick on the weak, before anyone posts I am not saying bullying went on here, just a attempt to derail the thread because they did not like it.

MerylStreep Sat 25-Jan-20 12:54:51

Callistemon
Sense of humour by pass on 'some' posters part.
It reminds me of the scene from The Good Life where Margo broke down because she couldn't understand what they were all laughing at. It turned out ( and we all knew) she didn't have a sense of humour. It must be awful ???

Callistemon Sat 25-Jan-20 12:45:55

Actually, far from being an in joke, I was trying to include a new poster who is feeling under the weather at the moment and asked if she could join in - which surely is the whole point of this thread?

Callistemon Sat 25-Jan-20 12:04:41

an in joke

No, it's not an in joke anyone is welcome to join in!
But it did digress from the OP (threads can tend to do that) - apologies to Lara.

I did post my views in response to the question earlier on.

I do hope the remark about English humour was not intended to be racist.

anniezzz09 Sat 25-Jan-20 10:00:27

Do you feel ignored ExperiencedNotOld? This thread has pretty much become an in joke and rather a waste of time! I support what you've written and Rosecarmel too. I think there's a very strange form of English humour that involves being 'clever' and excluding people but pretending that it's all innocent and they're just 'having fun'. Very tedious, got better things to do with my Saturday morning but I do like to support earnest and honest posters. About time that GN closed this thread!

sodapop Sat 25-Jan-20 08:34:52

Sorry Callistemon I will have the 'woke' police on my trail for the generic assumption that all Gransnetters are curvy dumplings.
Of course I am your mirror image including the nose grin

Callistemon Fri 24-Jan-20 20:00:56

To add to that, it's not very often that we see a 'familiar' name on the list of winners and, if I do, I give a cheer!

Callistemon Fri 24-Jan-20 20:00:14

Going back to the OP perhaps some people lurk and enjoy reading but have no desire whatsoever to join in.

Judging by the names on the list of competition winners I did wonder if a large proportion of people join just so they can enter the competitions? I do know people who enter every competition they can find in magazines, online etc and are often very successful indeed.

I hope that doesn't sound cynical.

Callistemon Fri 24-Jan-20 19:56:11

sodapop thank you for that, I should let you know that I am 5' 9" and a slim and toned size 10!!

Oh, my nose is growing all of a sudden tbblush

ExperiencedNotOld Fri 24-Jan-20 17:56:15

Very well put rosecarmel. My experience exactly. Yet I won’t put up with it and they don’t like that. Last weekend I posted about being mindful of others and not knowing what harm you may do with acid words (something like that) which sunk quickly. I stand by that sentiment and would hope others have the compassion to see that too.

Greeneyedgirl Fri 24-Jan-20 14:50:40

I don't remember either Callistemon but it does just illustrate the point.
BlueBelle can obviously teach you a thing or two from her stage days in gay Paree in the 50s grin

sodapop Fri 24-Jan-20 11:56:48

Marydoll that sounds like a full time job for several people grin

sodapop Fri 24-Jan-20 11:55:15

More like the Roly Polys if you remember them Callistemon
