What are these orange stains that have appeared on my hands overnight?

This happened first about 3 weeks ago and I thought it was because I had handled a Satsuma. It wouldn't wash off but disappeared over 24 hours. Then I woke up this morning to find dark iodine coloured stains down my index finger and light orange blotches on both palms and on the back of my thumb. I have googled this and nobody seems to know what it is so I am wondering if anyone on gn has come across this?

Hello. I too am experiencing the iodine colored staining all over my hands that seems worse when I wake up. It’s happened 3 times in the past few weeks. It doesn’t wash off, only fades eventually. I don’t eat any vegetables. I’m a 42 & female. It looks like self tanner that wasn’t washed off the hands after applied. Although I haven’t used any tanning products in decades. It’s becoming an annoyance since it’s reoccurring. It’s look like a rusty iodine color that is imbedded in the fine lines of the skin on my fingers and palms as well as around my fingernails. I’ve used soaps & lemon juice to scrub it off to no avail... the only thing let gets it off slightly is scrubbing so hard that I’m actually exfoliating off the top layer of skin. If anyone figures it out please let the rest of us know. Thanks.?

Hi all. Just an update that last night, and this morning when I’ve awoken, it’s back on both my hands and this time even deeper in colour/bigger! It seemed to disappear after a day or two last time so hoping it does again today. So very strange and can’t pin point what could’ve caused it. First day I ate a salad, yesterday my dinner with baby boiled potatoes and broccoli/cauliflower and mixed veg. Only had the tiniest bit of carrot in it. No peppers, chilli, etc etc. Intrigued

My boyfriend woke up with these stains this morning, I found this threat very interesting, we can’t find the reason for this, nothing makes sense. No changes to his eating habits lately, therefore we can’t believe is food related. It’s funny everyone agrees it happened overnight, you just woke up with it.

I have searched all over the internet for what is causing this, and this site and babycenter are the only places where I can find people with the exact pictures/descriptions of what's going on. So so strange. I have googled all different types of diseases with "hand staining" and nothing is like this. I am 34/F/WA and also woke up with this over night. This is the 2nd time it has happened to me, the first time I figured it was staining from eating something and brushed it off. Now I have it again on both hands, in the crevices of my finger nails, and had a very light streak of it on my leg. The streak on my leg came off immediately as if just a dribble of juice or something, but the stains on my hand would not come off with standard soap. I had to use a wash cloth and Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap and SCRUB it off my hands hard, and it all finally went away. The 3 things I have found to be the potential cause are peppers, nuts, and fruits. Possibly a fungus from touching fruits/nuts. I had eaten some almonds and been drinking water with cayenne pepper the day before, and also prepping others fruits but never ate any. Our bodies way of expelling excess (something)?
I'm just glad to know it isn't (likely) disease related because I've had some health issues lately and this really scared me.

So interesting! I woke up this morning with rust-colored blotches on both hands.

I have exact the same symptom as you, it happened to me a week ago and not going off. I now use baking soda solution to clean it and it works pretty well. But it will come back the next day. I am 25/M. Did you get covid vaccine (moderna) by any chance?

wonderguy2021 Thu 08-Apr-21 06:32:42

I want to add that I did CBC, Urine Analysis, liver, kidney, glucose, and even STD test, they all come back normal, except those for my NAFLD (I have NAFLD for 8 months). I met with 3 doctors in my pcp facility and they all have no idea, and suggest me to go to dermatologist.

Jgzz

Same thing happened to me today. Also overnight. No pain or discomfort. Just looks interesting. I’m also intrigued of what could be causing this all over the world. I’m in Austin, TX.

By any chance do you all take elderberry supplements. I took a larger than normal dose yesterday. And I had not taken it in a while. The other thing I can think of is stress? Have you all been unsually stressed when these appeared. I’ve been very stressed the last few weeks. Lots of changes.

I hope this helps someone figure out what’s causing these stains.

Yes, i am kind of stressful since the pandemic begins, it seems like some people also have this in common, but I am thinking this is not the root cause...

One of my doctor mention that products contain benzyl peroxide might cause this. I am actively using CVS wet wipe which contains sodium benzoate. I try to stop using that and I will report back.

Hello all! I've been waking up with these stains occasionally for the past year. Had them this morning for first time in a few weeks and found this place.

Having read your comments, I hadn't considered diet as I thought something was contacting my skin.

I don't eat carrots or peppers however I saw a few of you mention soy and I did have a salad bowl yesterday with edamame which I haven't eaten for a few weeks also.

Hi! Another that has joined the site just to respond to this! I'm a 40yo guy and just noticed similar marks this morning on my right hand on the palmside, on all fingers but mainly thumb and index finger. It definitely feels like an superficial, external mark, rather than something internal... But won't scrub off. I've never had it before, and not changed my diet or used new products. Could it be Amazon parcel boxes? I carried a small Amazon box in that hand for about 15mins yesterday when I walked to return it to an Amazon locker. The marks are consistent with how would have held it. So weird!

cvmillemve Fri 16-Apr-21 06:14:53

Hey everyone! I’ve been searching the web all night looking for answers on why my fingers are currently stained orange and just found this forum! I woke up today and was just resting in bed with my eyes closed, thinking to myself for a few hours due to being really fatigued (I have CFS, fibromyalgia, hypersomnia and Lyme disease so I have difficulty getting out of bed a lot). I finally got up to use the restroom and that’s when I noticed my fingers and how they looked like I had some kind of blood staining on them. I was really confused (still am) because my hands were fine when I went to bed last night. I didn’t get to bed until early morning hours so I know they looked normal around 3am. I wash my hands before I brush my teeth and floss every night so I would’ve noticed. When I tried washing my hands it wouldn’t come off and now it’s nighttime and it’s still there. I thought it was blood because it seems to be concentrated around the nail bed/cuticle and is even on my fingernail itself so I checked my fingers for cuts or skin breakage but there’s nothing (only a bit on my pinky that got some skin shaved off a while ago but it never broke through so it never bled and it’s been healing fine and there’s no scab). There’s also zero pain or discomfort anywhere so then I thought maybe it was from injuring myself in my sleep somewhere else. I checked my body for any wounds or scabs and there’s nothing. I also thought maybe I picked my nose in my sleep and it bled (I have allergies and my nose is really dry right now so it’s not a reach) but my nose looks normal and feels normal. Plus the fingers this is on just don’t make sense for that. It’s on my right ring finger and pinky finger predominantly, my left index finger but only slightly and it’s mostly the darker dried blood looking stuff along the cuticle area, a smaaaaall amount of orange on the outside of the ring finger of my left hand and then a few small spots on my right palm and underside of fingers. When I realized that It wouldn’t wash off I started really trying to figure out what it was since blood should’ve washed off. I read through this forum and thought about the food theory. I have terrible eating habits due to my basically non existent energy levels so yesterday I didn’t really eat much. I had a small amount of shrimp, scallops and Dover sole kind of stir fry thing last night. It had maybe 3 cherry tomatoes in it, parsley, onion and then a marinade which was just lemon and garlic and a couple other spices. I had a few bbq potato chips also; which was something I thought could’ve caused the stain but I eat with my left hand and this staining is mostly on my right. Also not the fingers I use to pick up chips even if I had used my right hand so that doesn’t work either. I don’t eat sweet peppers at all, don’t like them. I eat tomatoes, not a lot of them but regularly enough to know that I don’t react to them in any way. I’m not big on orange or red foods, carrots I like but I never eat them. I haven’t had any oranges in a while. I have a soy intolerance so I never eat soy unless it’s in something without my knowledge.
Something else I’d like to add and ask everyone here is if any of y’all noticed other symptoms happening while you had this staining? I was experiencing a slight metallic taste in my mouth all morning in bed before noticing my fingers and I’m still experiencing it. I’ve also been extremely shaky today, to the point where my roommate pointed it out multiple times all day and were concerned about it. Both of these things aren't normal for me. I do have problems shaking when I’m hypoglycemic so I ate to try to get my blood sugar up but it didn’t help and I’m still shaky no matter what food I eat today. I’m hoping this goes away like some of you mentioned it did for you but I want to know what would cause this! I’m dumbfounded. Has anyone found more information on this? Btw I’m in Portland, OR, USA and am an (almost) 25 year old female, seems like there’s not a pattern in age or gender but maybe location could be a commonality? Everyone seems to be in different locations but maybe there are similar environmental factors or something we’re exposed to?

SandDunes Fri 16-Apr-21 08:08:46

Hi cvmillemve, I also noticed a subtle metallic (almost like blood) taste in my mouth this morning. Does anyone else get this?

Tash13 Sun 18-Apr-21 09:57:16

I've had this on and off since I was a teenager, never understood what it was. Haven't had it for a couple of years then last week it came up, disappear, then back again this morning.
We've been eating more kidney beans and peppers than usual recently. Only thing I can put it down to!!!

HelloFriends Mon 19-Apr-21 15:51:55

Same story. Woke up with orange splotches on my fingers, like I had been holding a bottle of stain or something and it spilled. There are several spots on my right hand, and just one little mark on the left. There was nothing on my hands last night and the marks will not wash off.

I have not eaten anything unusual, don't eat carrots or peppers. I have not used tanning lotions, do not take any supplements. I have been in full menopause for a few years, so not hormonal.
No metallic taste in my mouth, but I do feel a little bit of tingling in the ends of my fingers. This may or may not be related, as it is something I experience on occasion.

Nothing on Google matches my symptoms, except what several of you have described in this forum.

I was also extraordinarily tired this morning, so until I get a better explanation I'm going with alien abduction.

Thanks for not making me feel like I am alone in this!

HelloFriends Mon 19-Apr-21 15:53:54

I should add that I am Native American and caucasian, but have never experienced anything like this before. It is the height of tree pollen season here in NC, and I do have pretty severe allergies. Anyone else?

Also, I got the 2nd Pfizer vaccine about a month ago.

cvmillemve Tue 20-Apr-21 04:09:41

I get bad allergies too! I always joke about how just as everyone here where I live starts to get out of their -winter- seasonal depression when spring starts, mine begins. The pollen and grass make me so tired and miserable.

cvmillemve Tue 20-Apr-21 04:24:35

I wanted to add an update- the staining on my fingers is almost gone now, but yesterday I woke up with a couple dark spots of the same color on my right palm. Literally looked like a paint splatter or something, which wasn’t there before. It’s gone now but it almost seemed like it spread out in an odd, disconnected way? Reading about how some people got this and then their partner got it after them or at the same time makes me wonder if it’s a type of fungus or mold or bacteria that can spread not only on our own skin but onto other people we have close contact with? The way it spread onto my palm as the days went on remind me of watching mold grow on bread for a science project back in elementary school. I have a gene mutation that limits my ability to rid mold out of my body on my own which makes me really sick sometimes since I also live in a heavily damp, rainy city where mold is everywhere and basically every house has a problem with it - including my own and it’s pretty bad. I don’t know if mold could even do this...fungus seems more likely but have never heard of such a thing either. Just throwing the idea out there but it’s purely speculation.

I’m so glad this forum exists! Haha
I’m 26, female live in NSW, Australia.
I have this too! Used to happen to me a lot as a young teen apparently? But just happened again to me last night after about a decade of nothing.
I haven’t changed diet, no fake tan, nothing in my house that stains, no bell peppers, no other stains on my bed, all the same stuff as everyone else... just very confused.
Someone should take this forum to a lab and start a research on it ??

jb111 Thu 22-Apr-21 14:14:11

I also get orange/iodine colored stains on my hands, more prominently on my left hand, and they seem to come and go quite randomly. I can't find anything definitive on the internet. Its hard to capture a decent photo of them.

TheDude Fri 23-Apr-21 08:51:48

I got the same thing the last 2 days. I am 24/M and live in Germany. I can just remember what might be interesting that my head was hurting for a really short time yesterday in the evening.

Maybe it is some conscious matter... What is your believe system. do you meditate or pray? Do you do other mindful practices?

I meditated more often the recent weeks and worked on my general flexibility of my body...

Lets find out what is going on!smile

Just65 Tue 11-May-21 18:07:11

I woke up this morning with this! A rusty colured patch on the palm of my hand and a couple of fingers. Doesn't wash off, but has definitely shrunk as the day passes, it was twice the size of the stain in the pic. How strange! No salad or peppers to eat yesterday, I was fasting and all I ate was cauliflower cheese and veggie sausages so not obviously food related! Anyone ever get to the bottom of it?

GoodJujuBeans Wed 12-May-21 02:16:53

Wow. Very strange. I have had my mark for 4 days now, which has slowly faded. I’m 32/F, live in Washington. No changes in diet.. but my hand did feel soar the day before the mark, and I assumed it was a bruise of some kind but could not for the life of me remember a time when I would’ve hurt my hand. And there was no longer any pain or tenderness when the mark showed up the day after like you’d expect with a bruise.
I do eat lots of leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables.. regularly. I got my Moderna Vax in March and April.
I’m curious what herbs and seasonings people are eating? One minor change I made to my diet is cooking with Creole seasoning the past month or so which has an orange tinge to it, and I use burts bees face wipes which has sodium benzoate in it.. which someone had mentioned.
Did anyone notice the layer of skin was an orange tint to it that they were able to rub off? I’ve started to rub it off at day 5 now and it’s orangish but the stain seems much deeper than the first layer of skin.
