Water stations at marathons

There’s going to be a half marathon round our town soon. At our church volunteers were asked for to hand out (plastic of course!) water bottles to runners. Which made me think what happened before plastic bottles then? Bet there are some runners on here who know!

I don’t know what happened prior to plastic bottles, although running marathons is a relatively new sport in the UK.

Why not use these instead of plastic bottles? A much smaller environmental impact! www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/04/13/london-marathon-runners-given-edible-water-bottles-organisers/

It use to be plastic cups filled with water, you ran past, grabbed a cup, took a gulp or two and then threw it like you do with the plastic bottles. Afterwards a grand clean up takes places collecting all the bottles/cups My husband is a runner and I have helped in many races.
