Am I the only person who didn’t know posters could be Googled?
I must be very naive indeed .

ananimous Wed 26-Feb-20 18:20:27

Just all your GN posts.

Chestnut Wed 26-Feb-20 18:19:13

If you google your full name all sorts of things come up and it's weird to see all the people with your name. Under images there was a picture of Marilyn Monroe!
Under my maiden name there was a psychic and my obituary!
I'm pleased to say the real me has absolutely no internet profile at all.

shysal Wed 26-Feb-20 16:15:19

The last time I Googled my GN name it came up with pictures of a porn star!

Elegran Wed 26-Feb-20 14:47:05

Possibly because it is an unusual combination, and there are not so many references outside Gransnet.

annsixty Wed 26-Feb-20 14:32:55

I did not, I repeat not, have to add Gransnet to my user name for my information and posts to come up.

TrendyNannie6 Wed 26-Feb-20 14:02:16

Yes

Chestnut Wed 26-Feb-20 14:02:02

I think anyone can do that without being a Gransnet user.

You can also find your posts by entering your username in the search box at the top of Gransnet.

Gemini You have posted a lot.

Doodledog Wed 26-Feb-20 13:50:08

Does nobody read threads before commenting?

Several people have pointed out that there is no point in googling just your username - you have to add 'Gransnet' to see your posts. Most usernames are fairly commonplace on the Internet, so no, just googling that won't be linked to here, but adding the name of the site will show up your posts. smile.

According to Google, I'm a domestic goddess, living in Indiana. Who'd have thought it!

anniezzz09 Wed 26-Feb-20 13:23:06

It used to be the case that any accusations of bullying could be reported and the posts deleted. Define bullying, I've seen threads that debated what was and what wasn't going back years. It's apparently subjective. Not sure what happens if you Google 'gransnet bullying'?

ananimous Wed 26-Feb-20 13:12:29

Every one of your bullying posts can be found by anybody typing your "username" AND "Gransnet".

I have seen at least two threads where the OP posted extremely detailed information about their family including names and places. One was quite recent but I can't find it now so it may have been removed. People have to understand how awful it is to do this to their family. Their children and grandchildren do not want their personal and private details to be splattered all over the internet. What if someone did that to them without their permission?

M0nica Wed 26-Feb-20 12:14:49

Aware of the dangers, I never had a profile on GN, nor have I ever posted any photographs.

I googled my real name and, despite having a relatively unusual name, there are a lot of women with my name, dead and alive, and it could be quite difficult to work out which is me. The only photo fronted a newspaper article, so was in the public domain anyway and you would have to know me to know that one of many photographs available and attributable to women with my name is me.

References to my professional and volunteer life, broadly identify the area I live in - but that I have referred to regularly, but hat is all.

Post my GN user name and Gransnet and I am very present,

curvygran950 Wed 26-Feb-20 12:02:06

MerylStreep, one of the purposes of starting this thread was just to let others GNs know that their posts can be viewed on Google . The more people who realise this, hopefully the less personal information will be posted and the safer users will be .

BlueSky Wed 26-Feb-20 11:59:39

Agree with Fiachna worse on fb as you are known by your real name, so even more careful on privacy settings and even then, what info you wouldn't mind sharing.

ananimous Wed 26-Feb-20 11:58:08

Yes, you are posting on a public notice board.

If you have nothing to hide, I would not worry yourselves.

The bullying threads remain forever folks so...

gransnet soops googled in images brings up the most.

Bibbity Wed 26-Feb-20 11:51:41

The internet can be dangerous.
Not to scare mom her but one poster a few years ago was very open with information. I never interacted with said poster. However when bed bound one day I spent 10 min (maximum. That’s all it took)
And managed to find her GC address and then on google maps the house and from that was able to easily work out which school she attended.
It honestly took zero effort.

rosenoir Wed 26-Feb-20 11:50:46

If you put gransnet in google and search images you can see all photos that people have put on.

People that know you will recognise rooms in your house ,pics of grandchildren and actual photos of meetups.

felice Wed 26-Feb-20 11:46:19

Quite a few Felice on Google but none of them is me. It is quite a common French surname so that is to be expected.
If I Google my real name there are a few items and photographs which were in the public domain anyway.

Yehbutnobut Wed 26-Feb-20 11:44:18

Thank you Elegran.

Elegran Wed 26-Feb-20 11:33:33

Yehbutnobut If you add "Gransnet" to Yehbutnobut you can see lots of your past posts.

MerylStreep Wed 26-Feb-20 10:55:54

When will some posters realise that GN is not the virtual reality equivalent of your friends sitting room. It's a business.
I'm constantly astounded that people are using the internet and have zilch idea of how it works and how information is shared.
