Lurkers' Week: Have you ever met a famous person?
(120 Posts)By chance, by invitation - it matters not!
We just want to know who. And where. And what they were like

TashaGransnet bumped into Ian McKellen at a theatre production in Doncaster and said he was friendly and professional. SarahGransnet often bumps into Alison Steadman who she assumes lives local to her, and I once passed Nelson Mandela on the escalator. Does that count?
Met Anthony Davidson (F! Driver) at Toyata Factory in Cologne. Enjoyed the company of Charlie LAwson (Jim McDonlad) on a radio show that I presented. I met Graeme Souness when I had the pleasure of teaching his son.
Far too many to mention.
Twenty years ago my 3 year old brought home a very late party invitation from another little girl I didn’t know at her pre-school nursery (a day or so’s notice). I had just had her baby sister who was only a few weeks old. We were free to attend so I called to accept and the mum was really pleased, particularly as it was such a late invite and she didn’t know any of the other mums. We duly turned up at the address and, with a 3 year old, newborn and birthday present in hand I found myself feeling slightly frazzled at the top of a gated drive with a buzzer. We were buzzed through, walked down the long drive, and the front door was opened by Duncan Bannatyne. It became clear that because of the late invite my daughter was the only child who could attend - there was a face painter there but my daughter always hated having her face painted and refused! Duncan and his wife weren’t at all fazed, were hugely hospitable, warm, friendly, and very helpful with my need to feed the baby etc. They had champagne and nibbles for family members (including his ex-wife and mother of his first 4 daughters), also there for the birthday. The little girls played happily all afternoon in the huge garden and I was made to feel really welcome with their families and given lots of delicious food to eat. It was lovely!
I have met Prince Charles at the Palace when I received my MBE, and met Princess Anne, when she came to open our Community Centre. She is really tiny when you see her, and she is very knowledgeable and interested in what we were doing. The night before going to the Palace, my SIL rang my DD panicing thinking we had got the day wrong, as the Queen was out of the Country lol, he thought she was the only one who presented the medals.
Several...as where I live broadchurch and harbour lights was filmed!
Don’t ask me to name them though
Apart from Nick Berry, they did some filming on the farm where I lived at the time
He was wonderful played football with my son, kept popping in and out of the cottage to see how West Ham was doing.
My daughter was about 3 at the time and wouldn’t leave him alone!
Hand in hand they walked to his caravan she screamed so much he let her in?
More politicians than I care to remember (it used to be part of the job), Prince Charles (he’s shorter than I expected), Max Boyce and Billy Connolly.
But the one encounter that really sticks in my mind is meeting Simon Weston. I know that he had some dark days immediately after the event which altered his life, but when I met him he was “at peace” with the world and I can honestly say that chatting to him was truly inspirational.
I met Lennie the Lion when I was a child. Since then - not many. I once got chatted up by Henry Blofeld (and he knew Noel Coward) - does that count?
Zara Phillips, Peter Scudamore and Nick Knowles, all nice ordinary people without airs and graces
On a hot summer day my friend and I were hitchhiking when a smart looking red car pulled up. We got in me in the front and her in the back next to a guitar in a case. Introduced ourselves and I asked his name. He said Elton John. Not recognising who he was I said is it John Elton? He replied no It's Elton in a gruff voice. Then he said to my friend Don't touch that it's my guitar. She was only sat next to it! We asked what he did and he said he was a musician.
Didn't speak again to us but dropped us off ok. Think he was put out that we didn't know who he was. Car was lovely it had aircon. Rare in 1969/70. We were both 16 at the time and lots of people hitchhiked.
moggycuddler. Mel Gibson was getting off a canal barge, my
sister lives right at the basin, I was leaving her house, walking
backwards and talking to her, my heel stepped on something,
his foot, he said ‘sorry’ , I said ‘no my fault sorry I should look where I am going’ he had a lovely smile which broaden when he said ‘ yes you could have fallen in the canal’,
Michelle Gayle came out at the back of an arena in the 90's. There were 5 kids waiting including my 2. She said that she could only give 3 autographs. My kids missed out so I didn't think a lot of her then. Just a simple action could have kept her fans happy but celebs don't think of that.
Marc Bolan when I was still at school
Bernie Winters who gave me and two friends a lift in a Rolls Royce Convertible when we hitch hiked to Torquay when 17 - he was lovely.
James Hunt, racing driver when in my 20's
Most of the cast of Au Wiedersehn Pet (probably spelt wrong)
Kenneth Cranham (Shine on Harvey Moon)
Quite a few others as a lot of tv shows used to be made at Central TV studios near where I lived.
In a club many years ago i met Tony Iommi out of Black Sabbath and the guy who played Benny in Crossroads.
Haha,my son literally bumped into sir ian mckellen when he came to give a talk when he was in high school about 5yrs ago- they bumped headlong into each whilst rushing down/up the stairs! He said he was very nice& apologetic about it
I also met David Cassidy when he did his comeback tour to uk about 15 years back- not at his concert(which i went to) but later,as he was staying at Hilton in blackpool& so was i! He was lovely, chatted a bit, shook my hand, even let me give him a peck on the cheek! I was a huge fan when i was a kid so i was well happy! My late mum met 'steptoe& son' stars years ago when it was at its height on tv too.
Sorry about the above - I'll start again.
Too many to mention because my DH played in a warm-up band for touring 'stars of the day'. then in a cabaret backing band for various venues. Meanwhile I was singing with a folk group and met most of the big stars of the folk scene including the Corries. Then being an active SNP campaigner I met/became friends with most of the big names in the Party.
DD2 works in the film/TV industry. Through her we have met loads of actors at premieres, wrap parties, etc and by being 'crowd artists' on several films and TV series. In general, I would say "the bigger the star the more natural and friendly they are".
Had a chat with Dave Prowse (Darth Vader) and made him a cup of coffee when he came to our school - he was also the Green. Cross Code man and had come in that capacity - wearing the costume! - to talk to the children,
Met Pepsi of Shirley and Pepsi when I taught her daughter for a while - she was living nearby with Luke of Bros at the time - he was local to me as had lived just round the corner to us when he was a child.
I met Neil Diamond when I was 17. It was his first visit to the UK he was just beginning to become well known
Back in the 1980s I was Ingrid Bergman's private nurse at her home in Cheyne Walk London. She was a real lady Also her daughter Isabella Rossinelli (spelt wrongly!)
I also nursed Dennis Healey's Mum
Reg and Ronnie Kray's Mum Vi ( a powerful personality)
I shared a house with Jimmy Tarbucks daughter
met Pete Frampton many times!!
I’m in a photo with Diana and another with Prince Charles and one where I’m seated in the presence of the Queen Mother. I appeared on the new with Maggie Thatcher. Encountered Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Dennis Waterman.
I was at college in Newcastle at the same time as Liam Neeson. Little did we know then how his career would take off.
played in a beat group who Too many to mention because my DH
Many years ago I ended up in Barbara Dickson's dressing room after one of her concerts and she gave us Welsh cakes whilst chatting to us. Really wonderful lady.
Michael Ball is always one to sign autographs and pose for photos....real trouper.
Bonnie Langford is also a real star and lady as well as being very approachable.
Younger stars/celebrities only want to do these paid Meet & Greets now.
I met Denis waterman and his partner Rula in a store in London. He was really nice she wasn't, she made me feel like I was something unpleasant that she had stepped in! I hadn't approached them, they actually came at me and got in my path, he was very apologetic she just pushed past me nearly knocking me over.
We arrived at a (popular for golfing people) hotel in Scotland and there was a rumour that Hugh Grant was also staying there. The next morning we came out of our room and turned to lock the door, and walking towards us was a man wearing very dark sunglasses. It was Hugh Grant, I was so gobsmacked I couldn't even say good morning. What a numpty
Instantly recognisable even with the sunglasses!
