Stay in NZ or return home to UK?

Hi grans - urgent advice needed please!

We have been in New Zealand since January, staying with my DS, his DP and GS. We were due to return on 1st May, but obviously all flights are cancelled.

The British govt. has now put on some 'rescue' flights to repatriate UK nationals. (Would have to pay £800 each). These are in the next 2 weeks.

It is obviously very safe here (only 12 Covid deaths in the whole country). NZ are gradually relaxing measures and should be out of lockdown in a few weeks. We have visas until the end of July, which would probably to extended under the circumstances. If we don't take the flights on offer we don't know how long it might be before we can get a flight and how much it might cost.

We can stay with family here, though would probably rent somewhere for a month or two as we've been locked down for a month now! We are helpful looking after GS as both parents are medics, but he could go to daycare.

In the UK, we live in a pretty safe area and have our own house to isolate in. We are both in good health. I only have the media and what family tell me to go on. So, how bad is it really over there? What would you do??

Thanks!

Can understand the yearning, but it depends where in the UK you live, some parts (especially built up parts) are more vulnerable. I have never been to New Zealand, but with the virus contained I would stay with family, sounds a lovely situation to be in.

Stay put. It’s a lottery over here!, stay put and come back when it’s safe..... new year looks a good bet!

We are in exactly the same situation here’s in Australia due to fly home mid May but flights cancelled. We decided to stay put here until at least July. Far better situation than in UK and we are with our families.

Just check the immigration regulations before you make any decisions. The visitor visa is only 6 months, if this is what you have. Our government may not put on anymore flights.

I live in NZ. You all cheered me up with all you comments on what a wonderful country it is. Sometimes one forgets this when feeling a bit low. ???. Thanks ?

Safe trip GrandmaKT. I am sure they will look after you well on the flight and once in the UK it will be over to you to take precautions. Once safely home do catch up again. I wish my family in New Zealand could just pop by for a day even to say hello.

Stay in NZ ! You have somewhere to stay and as long as your house in UK is secure, why come back ?
Until it is confirmed exactly how this virus is being spread, no point in gambling.
Let's face it - how many times have you been on a flight, perfectly healthy before stepping onto a plane and when you get home, within a few days, you have a heavy cold ? Is it worth the risk ?

STAY. STAY. STAY. NZ , unlike the U.K. appear to have a grip of this disastrous virus and you will be safer there for the time being.

Stay there. We have been in Crete since beginning of March and have had five flights back cancelled. Now looking like June/July before we get back to the UK.

There have been no recent cases of the virus in the last 16 days on Crete and as no one is allowed to come and go from the island, that makes us pretty safe.

Our only reason to go back is to help our son, who is very busy with our business, but even then we would have to self isolate for two weeks after travelling. As it is we have no choice at the moment as there are no repatriation flights available.

Stay where you. Enjoy the extended time with your family. You are obviously where fate wants you to be!

Stay smile

Safe journey home GKT. I returned home because of the visa situation and also to take advantage of the British summer which has started early this year Glorious. . It has only rained once since my return!

I wish I was in another country! Stay where you are if you can. This government is hell bent on herd immunity and doesn't care a jot who dies in the interim. We have thousands of people coming in on flights every day from all over the world with no checks and no follow up. I have never felt so disposable.

We are in the same boat in Oz! We came here in Jan and were due to return in March. I worried about coming back to UK do daughter and son called a skype meeting. They decided we should stay in Oz with Dd and 3 children do we did. Best thing ever! We've heped out as Dd's business has plumeted. Now helping to home school children in a beautiful town. We feel safe here so will come back when the UK is on the mend.

If your return flight is cancelled by the airline they must offer a refund or you can accept a voucher for a future flight. I'd stay as it seems you're safe there and likely to have more freedom sooner than we are!

Riggie Fri 24-Apr-20 13:48:44

What would happen if you overstay your visa? It's possible that there could still be no commercial flights in July and you will have missed the repatriation flights.

Speldnan Fri 24-Apr-20 13:50:17

Stay there! My son and family live there, wish I was there with them. Safer there and with a MUCH better PM!

GeorgyGirl Fri 24-Apr-20 14:10:32

Oh I would say stay where you are and keep helping your family.

Hope you get back safely and don’t find your garden too overgrown. The weather in the UK has been glorious though we could do with some rain.

Some posters choose to ignore the fact that NZ has a slightly larger land mass than the UK with a fraction of the population so considerably easier to deal with. The biggest problems are in the already over populated cities.

If some people had their way we would have totally open borders. So strange that so many people are risking their lives clamoring to get into the UK when a very loud and vociferous number of our own citizens appear to despise it. Puzzling?

Neilspurgeon0 Fri 24-Apr-20 14:25:17

No definitely stay there, gorgeous country, family, sensible politicians - what my DGD calls ‘a no brainier GrandDad’

Bucklen Fri 24-Apr-20 14:34:52

I agree .
So long as you get on with them / they are happy to have you , I'd stay in NZ.
They seem to be more in control, have one of the best PMs in the world - it's a no brainer from me .

alig99 Fri 24-Apr-20 15:15:59

I don’t personally I think you are not more at risk in the UK if you abide by the rules. I think your judgement call should be on when you think you might get a flight back if you stay now. Remember you will have to get a connection somewhere and it very much depends whether or not any of the countries en route will be allowing flights in and out. I think getting an international flight in the next 12 to 18 months is likely to be tricky and expensive. In addition as others have said I think you will need to take into account whether or not you have things you need to be in the UK for in the next 12 to 18 months.

4allweknow Fri 24-Apr-20 16:59:10

Stay, definitely. The UK has thousands of people arriving from all over the globe every week and no testing on landing. Scotland alone has 8000 a week. These travellers scatter all over the land. Do you feel tempted? I really hope not!

jen53 Fri 24-Apr-20 17:40:17

Stay exactly where you are. It’s a no brainer. Jacinda Ardern is doing an amazing job at leading her country through this awful situation. I think she’s an amazing woman and just wish we had her here.

notanan2 Fri 24-Apr-20 17:44:00

Im curious as to how it would work if you stayed with Visas and healthcare?
