Re Freezing?

Hello all, and hope you are safe and well.

I made a batch of chilli in early April, and asked Mr P to put a couple of portions for 2 in the freezer. (If that makes sense?)

We have some tubs that hold the perfect amount for 2 portions of things like chilli, Bolognese sauce, mashed potato etc, but Mr P seemed to "forget" those hmm even though we have at least 12 of them, and put a quantity into a freezer bag. confused

A rather large quantity, as I have discovered when taking it out ready for tonight!

Under normal circumstances, I would just invite some friends to supper, but of course that can't happen. sad

So, do you think it would be ok to put some of it back in the freezer?

I would never do that with things like chicken or sausages, but wondered if homemade chilli might be ok.

It's either that, or waste it, and I hate wasting food! Plus, it's another meal for another time that I won't need to make from scratch.

I would do it if all has been thawed and thoroughly reheated before re-freezing. As I've said in post previously, I'm a retired microbiologist, so know a bit about the risks. The main risk in re-freezing is that bacteria would have multiplied in meantime and are not killed by freezing. However, once thoroughly heated, they will be killed.
The texture of some foods - eg fruit - is affected by freezing, but this would not apply to chili.

Well, I do that sort of thing all the time and have never been ill through it.

Put it back in the freezer.

If it really worries you, why not put it in the fridge and have it tomorrow? If you think there isn't enough, add some tomatoes and frozen peas for instance and you'll soon have enough.

I accept it means having the same meal two days on the trot but does it matter. I often do so.

I do as long as it’s beef, strangely I wouldnt do it if it was chicken and we are still here!
However, I defrost all of my meat meals in the fridge and not out on the worktop, if it got warm in the kitchen then I wouldn’t refreeze it.

Heat it through and then refreeze - but do it yourself this time - do you never learn. {grin]

Just save a second portion for the day after and reheat separately. You should never refreeze any thawed out food stuffs, surely everyone knows that.

I agree with Farmor. As long as it has been reheated/boiled adequately, there is no problem in re-freezing.

Thank you all for the replies, much appreciated!

I always heat things very thoroughly, so that isn't a problem. Once it has defrosted I will put aside the correct quantity for tonight, then immediately put the rest in the freezer.

Tangerine we can't have the same thing 2 days running, but only because there is something else that Mr P bought that will have to be used tomorrow confused wether we fancy it or not!

kitty I think that ^^ will probably answer your question! grin

I shouldn't complain, he does go and get the shopping, my COPD means that I really do need to avoid going out (apart from exercise) but I have had to do very specific lists, not only what to buy, but what not to buy! blush

Today's specified "Do NOT buy sausages!" I've also had to resort to that thing that one does when shopping online, i. e. "No substitutions"

(There was a previous post along the lines of " when is a cauliflower like a leek.........)

quizqueen yes, of course "everyone knows" the general rule, but as with all rules there are always exceptions, as some of the replies illustrate!

I’ve refrozen things a few times and it’s always been fine.

Missfoodlove Fri 01-May-20 17:51:44

To reheat frozen chilli just boil in the bag. No need to defrost.

phoenix Fri 01-May-20 18:04:56

Not sure the freezer bags Mr P used are boilable, Missfoodlove and definitely wouldn't want to risk finding out!

I wonder why chilly 🥶 is hot 🥵?

Try putting the chilli in MrP then putting him in the freezer. That’ll teach him 😉

phoenix Fri 01-May-20 20:40:26

Oh Doodle to use one of Mr P's phrases, " No need darling, no need! " (Usually said when I'm either swearing like a trooper, or giving him a right good telling off!)

Anyway, Mr P is quite a big chap, and due to his rather "random" shopping, there is not much room in the freezer for anything rather than a tub of locally produced toffee fudge ice cream (innocent face)

Can you cut enough off the frozen/part thawed chilli for tonight and put the rest back before it thaws?
