What is this obsession with holiday?

Watching the news it is obvious that people can't wait to go abroad on holiday.

We have been on lots of lovely holidays, both abroad and at home, but I can't understand this current determination to rush off. We have had 2 trips cancelled this year.

Are you raring to go away?

Look again at holiday cottages if you really must go away. We’ve stayed in many ‘untatty’ ones. You get what you pay for.

We have stayed in holiday homes previously but all the better ones at this point in time are either booked up or still not taking bookings.

You could take a tour of local schools and see how they are coping......?

My wife and I are both on holiday for ten days as from this afternoon. We have been very busy in our business due to the Covid-19 crisis and therefore have not had any real break since Chrismas.

Our original plan for setting aside the coming week was to visit Belgium and once again see the André Rieu Maastricht concert(s) that we so much enjoyed last year. However, that has all been cancelled, so it is a question of what to do with our time off now.

We do not feel as though we would wish to fly anywhere even if there were many flights going so that just leaves Britain.

However, hotels we feel may not be that safe in terms of coronavirus infection. Holiday cottages, where they are available, look "tatty" and our own home would seem to be far more comfortable.

We did think of a few days in London, but sitting on a train with a mask on for more than two hours is not an appealing thought, with still the problem of hotel confidence, and of course "The Underground" to deal with.

So, we both feel as though we are to be let off the lead but there is nowhere to run. ?

Therefore, any suggestions would be welcome. ??

I can understand those who were planning on visiting family in far off places, family that they rarely see. That is hard.

All those who just want ‘a bit of sun’ and to jet off abroad, then no, I can’t understand their mindset. They seem willing to take the virus with them or bring it back. We should be following NZ’s example. It seems their citizens are more socially aware.

Personally I've never understood the obsession with holidays. We have friends whose whole lives revolve around booking the next holiday or cruise and it's all he talks about.

I've never been a fan of holidays - selfish I know as my husband loves travelling but now (even without Covid) he's not really fit enough and I'm not sure I'd get travel insurance. We have been abroad over the years and done long haul to US & NZ as well as annual UK holidays when the children were young but it's always such a hassle with pets and now one of our two cats is special needs so we can't leave her.

However we do have a bungalow on the coast where we grew up so class that as our holiday home and take the cats with us. We have family and friends there so it's home from home. Now the restrictions are being lifted we will be able to go and stay again although his retirement plans have gone pear shaped as he's agreed to work again until the end of the year so I'll probably be going on my own more hmm

Lucca?? I read it back and amazed. Years ago, when I embarked on my career path, secretarial college involved getting up to the highest touch typing speed, 120 wpm. The key were blank. I still type that way, although I only worked for two years originally doing shorthand and typing, until my career path changed direction. These lessons are set in my brain and I type, press send and that's it. I do try periodically, for fear of being sued, read through and alter, I will endeavour to change my errant ways. It is fortunate for employers that with technology I didn't work on computers with prescriptive text it could have cost them their business's .

I think holidays are important for human beings as they add to the mosaic of life. Think of some of the fascinating places you have seen and they live in your treasure box of memories. When you read a book, see a film or hear about a place you had visited, you have a stronger reaction and interest than you would if you had never set foot in the place, it definitely widens your horizons. For those who proudly assert they never go abroad, do you get the same thrill thinking back to days spent at home as you would seeing some of the wonders of the world?

hollysteers Thu 02-Jul-20 09:56:02

Oh apologies Bellasnana! ?My bad, as they say. Yes Malta is a small island, but lovely.
My comments stand regarding seeing our own island for those who think there’s nothing here,

I often wonder what the obsession with holidays is. What sort of lives are people leading when all they can talk about is where they going on holiday, where you going on holiday and where they've been? I enjoy my breaks and holidays but have cancelled one and not been anywhere for 6 months but doesn;'t dominate my life. So sad some people live for their 2 weeks away.

Sparkling. There are some lovely predictive text errors in your post !!

Invoked crusaded and uncrowned beaches!

We cancelled a planned holiday to France in May and were disappointed but obviously it couldn’t go ahead. We are waiting to hear if we can rebook the same house rental for August but think it won’t be possible because the owner will be using it. We said we would still go because we could book the tunnel ( or possibly ferry) none of us want to fly this year.

We also looked into a UK holiday in August but everywhere is horrendously expensive and mostly booked up.

The daughters will do some short breaks camping in the U.K. with one set of friends but I don’t think I’ll be able to have a holiday at all this year which will be a shame but there are worse things to worry about

For a lot of people doing lockdown alone, the thought of reconnecting with people they see on holiday is a dream. I can't see for foreseeable future he going on a cruise or sitting on a crowded plane or a coach. What a lot I took for granted. I woukd like to go away but wouldn't risk it. All activities I did were mixing with lots of people at close quarters, getting to the paces invoked crusaded buses and trains, again when will we feel cob didn't enough to do that. So I'll dream of foreign shores or even an uncrowned uk beach. Meanwhile I'll get the mower out and donsome stripes.

Reading room, I wish for you a vert happy and successful holiday in the motorhome.

TheReadingRoom Thu 02-Jul-20 07:14:43

I'm no fan of airports, waiting around and flying despite both sons and families living in Canada & Australia. BUT we now have a motorhome [retirement present to ourselves] and are planning trips around the UK - at least for the rest of this year. Maybe France again next year ...

Callistemon Wed 01-Jul-20 23:02:58

Where you could visit a different church every day of the year smile

gillybob Wed 01-Jul-20 22:45:40

Bellasnana lives in Malta hollysteers smile

Maggiemaybe Wed 01-Jul-20 22:41:01

I may be wrong, but I’m not sure that Bellasnana lives in the UK, hollysteers.

hollysteers Wed 01-Jul-20 20:53:35

Bellasnana Great Britain is hardly a small island. I have travelled extensively all over the world and am now enjoying exploring my own country. Bill Bryson said we do not appreciate what we have here and I agree.
I do love foreign holidays and of course, the weather, but there is much here and I for one am looking forward to carrying on ticking off the wonderful cathedral cities of the U.K.

I really don't like going away at all, holidays just aren't on my radar. I simply don't understand the obsession with a week or more in the sun. Even if I were to choose a holiday, it wouldn't be in a hotel in a holiday resort - I'd rather go camping out of season, with just my dog. Currently, though, I would not get on a plane or any other public transport to go anywhere, and I would not go abroad anywhere for any reason.

My adult daughters are polar opposites to me, and will be booking holidays in the sun as soon as they possibly can. We have had to agree not to discuss it, I'm horrified that they could consider it.

We have a break in cottage, in a rural location booked for October and will go to that. We always take our beloved dog with us, so this is normal for us.
For now just getting excited about our static caravan site opening up on Saturday. Very easy to socially distance there. we can chat to neighbours across the way, from our decking area, a very wide pathway between us. Lovely walks for Sid the dog in local woods. Can't wait.

gillybob Tue 30-Jun-20 21:58:05

I have lovely memories of the the last proper holiday I had Alexa . I would love to do it again .....maybe in my next life smile

BoBo53 Tue 30-Jun-20 21:20:48

We’ve transferred both our holidays to next year and will stay put for the time being! Amazed however by friends who have just booked a self catering holiday in the UK for September. They have had ourselves and others running around for them shopping, prescriptions etc for the whole of lockdown only going out for gentle walks! Wonder who will have the job of stocking them up for ‘their holiday?’

deanswaydolly Tue 30-Jun-20 20:04:03

Like many on here I just want to be able to see my daughter and family as I miss them so very much. There are no longer any cases left where they are however I do not want to catch it en route and take it there. I know that will happen anyway though.

Alexa Tue 30-Jun-20 19:14:00

I hope you can do so again gillybob. I think you must have
had some really successful holidays like you describe.

I find different cultures hard work to fit in with, but I might like to be in an unusual place if it was comfortable although when I was younger I was more adventurous.

I would like to swim in the sea, but not the effort to get there and live in a hotel or rented place.
