Do people think the pandemic is over?

This week I went into our village to pick up a prescription and to go to the butcher's. I wore my mask - you're asked to do so in the chemist's - but I only saw one other person wearing a mask at all, even in the chemist's. Everyone was walking about as though the virus no longer existed and everything was back to normal. I'm going to continue to wear my mask if I go into any shops. Do people really think that the danger is past?

Is this the Nicola Sturgeon who, thus far does not appear to have contracted the virus herself and has a policy of eliminating the virus from her country. Who has mandated the wearing of masks in shops and on public transport. Who has someone signing at her press briefings? Phew: it’s a good job that we’ve got Boris as our leader and not her.

The UK briefings were signed, we watched on the BBC news channel

IMO people are becoming a bit complacent, or more than a bit in many cases.

Wearing a mask on public transport is supposed to be mandatory, but when I took a bus recently, for the first time since lockdown, 4 people got on without one and the driver said nothing. Whether he was supposed to I don’t know - maybe he feared trouble/abuse if he did.

In my local Asda the other day only about 1/4 of the customers were wearing masks. I could understand that at the beginning of lockdown, when they were like gold dust, but that’s certainly not the case now.

I do fear a second wave, since I don’t suppose this thing is going away any time soon. So we have to learn to live with it, which means taking sensible precautions.

The other day I dreamt that there was a 2nd major lockdown and somebody came and sealed our front door shut! Very weird, since I have never been overly anxious about the virus.

You can figure out if masks are effective easily. Just get someone to talk loudly to you at 2 m , 1 m and close up without and then with mask you feel the breath land on you at 1 m no mask , but not 2m. With mask not even at 1 m.

I noticed more delivery slots opening up for Tesco’s do that probably reflects on how many people are now physically shopping at supermarkets again. Personally I’m sticking with delivery.

We don’t think it is over by any means and believe in a second spike. Our adult children are very serious about the precautions and despite pubs and restaurants bring open now - most seem virtually empty. We as a family will not be going out for meals or drinks anytime soon.

I don’t think the pandemic is over - it’s just over in some places. It will probably be erupting in random places for a long while yet. As for Vit D , Zinc , etc and masks I’ll keep sticking to it.
A team from the University of California Davis Children's Hospital has found that covering the nose and mouth decreased the risk of COVID-19 infection by 65 percent.

Tesco definitely are of the opinion it is over.. When DH went last night all the slaloms were removed and the hand sanitation area had disappeared. You just stroll in and grab any old trolley. Good job he always has his own hand sanitiser in his pocket.

I don’t think that leaders wearing a mask for a photo opportunity means anything.

I do think it would be better all round if wearing masks were mandatory in shops. It is already on public transport, hospitals and GP surgeries, so shops is the next logical move.
We have ours ready, along with hand sanitiser, but haven’t actually been into any shops as yet.

If I had done something dangerous like gone into town, I might well wear a mask for the next week or so when out and about, to protect others from any consequences of my risk-taking.
As I haven't, I don't feel the need.

BlueSky Thu 09-Jul-20 09:14:53

Suzie like your choice of masks (and leaders)! grin

Jen60jen Thu 09-Jul-20 09:09:48

I also think masks are possibly only effective in very busy places indoors, but even then they can actually harbour germs and its good when outside to get plenty of fresh air. I personally feel wherever you can avoid busy places, hense the virus has been prevalent in densely populated areas.

I went I town yesterday and it’s nothing like normal. Surreal and everyone avoiding eye contact. It wasn’t a fun experience. I did think most of the shops were making a real effort and the staff were friendly and helpful.
But not normal in any sense of the word.

Gma29 Thu 09-Jul-20 09:06:50

I think that unless there is evidence that masks are useless we should have to wear them in public.

I also think that there needs to be some simple instructions on mask wearing, judging by the number of people that I have seen constantly adjusting, touching and pulling their mask up and down. Or not wearing it over their nose....

Froglady Thu 09-Jul-20 09:04:42

I personally don't think the pandemic is over; I think people are trying to persuade themselves that everything is back to normal, and that's when mistakes will be made and we could be back where we were several weeks ago. Some people behaving exactly as they were before the lockdown as the sights of crowded beaches show only too well that the lessons haven't been learnt.

BlueSky Thu 09-Jul-20 09:03:46

Hetty a sore point here, yes masks might only protect the others not yourself but that's why they are useful if everybody wears them! It seems such a small step to make them mandatory at least indoors but this is ignored by the powers to be! No mask no shop! Plus distancing and hand washing of course, that's all the tools we've got at the moment.

Marieeliz Thu 09-Jul-20 08:57:54

People wearing masks pulled up and down continuously. Under their chin when waiting for the bus. Useless.

Furret Thu 09-Jul-20 08:45:58

Yes I agree, Suzie we could do with someone like Ms Sturgeon in charge here. At least she can string a sentence together coherently which is an indicator of logical thought processing,

completely miss the point

suziewoozie Thu 09-Jul-20 07:38:37

But hey let’s

suziewoozie Thu 09-Jul-20 07:37:54

At least she was prepared to be photographed in one unlike Johnson

Calendargirl Thu 09-Jul-20 06:55:15

Nicola Sturgeon wasn’t wearing a mask the other day when she was sat in a pub or bar, talking to a waiter who was wearing one. If she was about to have a drink, however, she obviously couldn’t wear one.

Just thought that was a photo moment when she might have been encouraging the wearing of one.
