Which seaside town all advise welcome.

JuicyL this is our second visit to Wells, last time about 10 years ago. We liked the small town, shops, market etc and intend visiting the cathedral this time. Not sure what pubs/cafes will be open but I suspect we won’t have a problem. Last time we visited we climbed up Glastonbury Tor, very steep, couldn’t manage it now. Glastonbury was full of rather odd folk IMO one female was dressed as a fairy with pink wings. ?‍♂️

Marydoll you little devil. Pity you and I couldn’t have an hour or two in the shopping village, purely for research purposes of course ? I will definitely visit One Hundred Stars.

Try Clevedon, historic pier with little cafe at the end, Hill Rd close by with independent shops and eateries galore. Sit on the sea front, watch the world go by and enjoy a ice cream

Greengreengrass thank you that’s useful because hotel I tried to book for afternoon tea doesn’t open till late September.

I was born in WSM - honeymooned here 50 years ago and though I completely agree with greengreengrass that it is a tad rough around the edges, I love it too !

I return two or three times a year - and my favourite place ?

Anchor Head. There's a wonderful walk from Marine Lake around Madeira Cove. Very pretty and completely sheltered. Lots of benches too, to take in the sea views.

Mawb2 I didn’t ask for inland but the replies suggested Wells is nice. Bit harsh comment don’t you think, folk are just offering there advise as I have no idea about the area.

oh and potentially little known fact, there is a Warners hotel in Sand Bay WSM. Adults only.

Some locals go there for Christmas. Doesn't suit everyone but no doubt heavily discounted at the moment search online.

And bistro whatsit is called Bistrot Pierre see website. They also do Breakfast and Afternoon tea now though haven't been to either and you can sit outside on balcony if not too windy.

Oh Kate, I couldn't resist a peak at the shopping outlet website in Shepton Mallet. No chance of me visiting, but I know I would love it.

They have a Hundred Stars shop! Don't be buying any more tops! You should ask for a discount for all the business you have brought them through GN.

Taunton is reachable from WSM on train about twenty minutes.

Walk from station into town. Lovely museum spacious probably okay for social distancing.

Outdoor stalls. Park.

On the way from train station lovely pub on right pieminster home made pies including vegetarian ones with home made mash and gravy.

Pierre whatsit on seafront now doing breakfast. You can get a loyalty card no doubt with introductory offer.

Not sure if cinemas open yet but Odeon used to be four quid with seniors club in case it rains

I love mexican food so happy that loco mexicana soon to open on prom, it is jolly and a bit different.

Wells is nothing liked a seaside town!
Why ask for a recommended seaside town (thread title) if you want to go inland?

Just occured to me, if you visit WSM or Burnham at the wrong time of day re tides, the sea vanishes! It goes out a long way, many a car has been trapped on the beach because people drive out not realising how the tides race in and out.
We always called it Weston super mud when we were young as sometimes that was all you saw for a few hours lol.

Not been there myself but I know a friend said the gardens are lovely.
If it's like the shopping village in Street it tends to be the dearer brand shops, though Street does have M&S and Next in there.

Nankate yes wsm does sound like nicer option. Please let me know your thoughts on Wells after your visit as my idea of visiting Yeovil and Taunton doesn’t sound like a good idea after reading the advise. Enjoy your visit.

We are off to Wells for a few days on Thursday and were intending visiting B on S. I think we will change that now to W SM.

Has anyone visited the shopping village in Shelton Mallet? Is it worth a trip.

I think cheddar Gorge caves are closed which is a shame as I love caves, even if they are commercialised.

Thank you so much for the tips, as there are 3 of us and I’m the nominated organiser, i was planning on going to Yeovil and Taunton but it seems Wells is the nicer option by what you folk are saying.I’m grateful for the recommendations especially as they are relying on me.

My in-laws lived in Burnham-on-Sea - we used to call it the dog shit capital of Britain. Just look where you are putting your feet!

The Sea Life Centre in WSM closed last year hellogirl, an empty shell now. I would think WSM is better for public transport links , easy enough to get to Bristol and of course a station. Sand Bay is good for a non commercialised walk, Sand Point for the energetic has excellent views as does Brean Down which also has a fort. I’m sure you’ll enjoy either WSM or Burnham, best to check tide times though, both look better with water .

Nice market in Wells. Worth an amble and cathedral gardens are lovely.

Reservoir at Cheddar is good for a walk. At the other end is a small village with some decent eateries.

The mendips give good walking.

Burnham is worth a look just to appreciate its past. But like so many of our seaside towns run down.

Glastonbury of course.

Oh yes, I forgot about Wells. Yes it is lovely. Cheddar is a bit touristy but the gorge is dramatic so worth a short stop for something different.

not yeovil nor taunton. WSM is geared up for tourists and residents. Plenty of buses and shops. Glastonbury is popping, you can also get decent bus service. Plenty of people watching in glasto and reasonable prices for good food, lots of vegan and veggie places

Yeovil is not very good these days, lots of the main shopping area has empty shops.
Glastonbury has lots of odd folk wandering around many with dogs in tow, the so called 'mystic' lot have taken over shops - ok if you're into Crystals/fairy's and such nonsense. It's my home town and I was so sorry to see the way it is now.
Street is better if you want shops.
Wells is a lovely town, nice to wander around. Has the Cathedral and Bishops Palace too.

I wouldn't recommend Yeovil. It was my home town many years ago. We went back last year. It is now very run down and sadly lots of homeless begging on the streets.
Glastonbury was always nice although not been there for years.

Seems WSM getting the votes at the moment but I’ll keep waiting and watching.Thank you for the tips I’ve noted them down. Just doing research on Yeovil and Taunton now.

We go at least Four times a year,but BOS is nice so would not rule it out.

Weston-Super-Mare is nice. It`s a friendly place, and if you have mobility problems it`s mostly flat. As stated above, the museum is well worth a visit, ditto the sea life centre. Good fish and chip shops and cafes abound. Just don`t go to the water`s edge for a paddle, you`ll end up up to your knees in gooey mud, but the beach itself is OK.

Don't know BOS but WSM is nice. Sand Bay worth a visit, too. There is a pub at Sand Bay called, I think, The Admiral, which does good food and there is a pleasant walk along the beach path which goes into a NT area. Have a good time!
