MamaCaz, you need kids'waders. I got some for my grandson when he lived here (right by the river and sometimes floods) from the local anglers' shop - but here they are online:

I grew up calling them gumboots - presumably a reference to the material they were made from. I usually call them wellies these days.

Wellies or wellieboots.

We called the gum boots in Scotland. Only children with an English parent talked of Wellington boots or wellies.

I am Scottish and I have never heard anyone calling them, gumboots. I always thought it was an English expression.
Any children I taught called them wellies and very few had an English parent.

Thank you for the suggestion.
At the moment, I put her in a spash suit (then a coat over the top), but waders look like they would do a much better job of keeping her dry. smile

I thought "gumshoes" were actually galoshes rather than (what I call) Wellies.

I could be wrong....

They may well be but gumboots are wellies !

Greyduster Tue 17-Nov-20 13:10:49

They were called gumboots when I was growing up, and then wellies when my children came along and are still wellies. We lived in Northern Ireland for two years GrannyZ and it rained so much I thought we would all have webbed feet! My children lived in wellies!! Beautiful country though!

Wellies

Although I had heard the term gum boots many years ago.

Callistemon Tue 17-Nov-20 14:15:20

Ps or, of course Wellington boots named after the 1st Duke of Wellington.
The first ones weren't made of rubber, of course.

cavewoman Tue 17-Nov-20 14:19:09

Water boots in my part of Essex, also called Wellies.
Never known as gum boots.

mrswoo Tue 17-Nov-20 14:31:14

Wellies at home but at school we used to call them wellgogs

mrswoo Tue 17-Nov-20 14:32:00

MiniMoon Tue 17-Nov-20 17:19:50
