My dd and I have had numerous discussion on the the Subject of boots for jumping in water I call them water boots and she calls them Wellies she said I have made up the word water boots as nobody else calls them that so I was just wondering what you all would have called the I live in Northern Ireland and I my mum definitely called the water boots ?☔️

They were called gumboots when I was growing up, and then wellies when my children came along and are still wellies. We lived in Northern Ireland for two years GrannyZ and it rained so much I thought we would all have webbed feet! My children lived in wellies!! Beautiful country though!

They may well be but gumboots are wellies !

I thought "gumshoes" were actually galoshes rather than (what I call) Wellies.

I could be wrong....

MamaCaz, you need kids'waders. I got some for my grandson when he lived here (right by the river and sometimes floods) from the local anglers' shop - but here they are online:

Thank you for the suggestion.
At the moment, I put her in a spash suit (then a coat over the top), but waders look like they would do a much better job of keeping her dry. smile

Wellies. If it wisnae fur yer wellies grin

I am Scottish and I have never heard anyone calling them, gumboots. I always thought it was an English expression.
Any children I taught called them wellies and very few had an English parent.

We called the gum boots in Scotland. Only children with an English parent talked of Wellington boots or wellies.

Wellies or wellieboots.

I grew up calling them gumboots - presumably a reference to the material they were made from. I usually call them wellies these days.

They were called gumboots back then, at home - but now wellies.

I've always said Wellies but my parents said Water Boots.
My parents were from Norfolk and I assumed it was a local thing.

It’s clearly an accepted term. Google it and you see you can buy them on Amazon!

Grannynannywanny Tue 17-Nov-20 08:35:50

Lucca thanks for sharing the Billy Connolly clip. Not heard that for years. I watched a recent interview just last night. He hasn’t lost his sense of humour despite the impact of Parkinson’s.

Wellies or Wellingtons. I have heard gumboots but never water boots.

Perhaps it's political. Ireland was possibly exploited by or hated the Duke of Wellington for some other reason so refused to use his name.

This would have been before Ireland was divided up of course, so the language would have been the same all over the island.

Welligogs in our house smile

Grannynannywanny Tue 17-Nov-20 08:27:54

The last time I had a sea paddle with my 2 youngest GC in March I felt one of my feet go very wet and icy cold as one of my wellies sprung a leak.

My little grandson was fascinated when I removed the wellies and left them in the beachside bin. There was already a very large pair of waist high fisherman waders hanging out of the bin.

BlueBelle Tue 17-Nov-20 08:25:51

Wellies here ..... gum boots is a very older fashioned term not heard any more
I ve never heard Wellies called water boots maybe it’s a Northern Ireland thing any other posters from NI ?

Wellies/wellingtons/wellie boots here.

(Wish I could get extra long ones for two year old dgd, who loves leaping up and down in every puddle we come across on our very wet walks grin)

Ellianne Tue 17-Nov-20 08:23:20

Muck boots here, but that's because it is the brand name of my wellies.

Nandalot Tue 17-Nov-20 08:19:00

Yes, gum boots, a blast from the past.
Wellies here. Never heard of water boots

Marydoll Tue 17-Nov-20 08:14:35

Wellies, which is what everyone here calls them.
I had to buy a new pair, as DGD and I used to spend a lot of time splahing in the sea before lockdown put paid to that.?

M0nica Tue 17-Nov-20 08:14:05

Another for wellie boots or wellies. Seem to remember, as a child DM said wellingtons.
