Is this unusual ?

Brief background. Oldest GS will be 12 in May, his 9 y.o. brother is SEN.
They haven't had a very stable home life until a year ago. They share time between their dads house and my daughter's. I certainly wouldn't say 12 y.o. is at all 'street wise' and is quiet a sensitive boy.
They both still sleep with cuddly toys, is this unusual for their age ? I realise it could be due to their history but worry about the 12 y.o. mates finding out.

My SonIL (in his 40s) still sucks his thumb!! He is a lovely kind man.

My son is 20 and I notice that he still keeps his "Furry" which is an old sheepskin mat that he fell in love with as a toddler and used throughout his childhood and teens. He doesn't use it all the time or take it to Uni but he can't part with it completely.
We had 2 identical mats which we put over the sofa arms to protect them. My son could tell the difference and always cuddled the same one. He never wanted the other one. It's strange what they attach themselves to but I wouldn't worry about a child having a similar toy at any age.

Anyone remember Radar and his teddy in MASH?

moobox Mon 01-Mar-21 11:32:34

My son slept with one of those flat nosed teddies popular in the 70s. It was certainly flat by the time he left home! My daughter couldn't have cared less, and even donated him her birthday teddy from the entertainer. I find most of the girls in the family now collect them, but not sure if they sleep with them.

My 16 year old Grandson has Special Educational Needs (SEN) sufferers from Autism and ADHD. He cannot get to sleep at night without his Cuddly toys, including a Rabbit called Evie, and a Ragdoll called Betty. The Choice of Girls names for them has caused some rather Confusing and Embarassing situations in the past, he takes pride in telling every body and anybody about taking them to bed with him, often quite loudly and in Public places, and how he strokes and loves them so much! I wouldn't worry about it at all. Times have changed. I'm 64 and still have cuddlies on my bed.

polnan

firstly, what is a SEN?

I am in my 80`s. grew up during war years and after, never ever had a cuddly toy, first doll when I was about 11 ish, but didn`t know what to do with it!

latest few years, my best friend, dil and other dil and ds have bought me cuddlies,, but I don`t know how to sleep with one..

seems I miss something? especially as my dh died 15 months ago, still don`t know how to cuddle "cuddlies"

I think SEN means Special Educational Needs.

Gosh no!

My 29 year old still has her 'bunny 'and my 26 yr old still has her 'chirpy'!

Many years ago my cousin's son aged 12 came to stay with us. After he'd gone we noticed a lump in the bed which turned out to be a teddy. He didn't mention to anyone that he'd left it behind. The next time we saw the family we returned it without comment. My grandad died when I was 20. My first real loss. I remember sleeping with my teddy the first night after he died and I still have my teddy in my bedroom although not my bed!

Dylant1234 Mon 01-Mar-21 11:10:16

Once knew someone in SAS and he still had his childhood teddy in his bedroom ?. Never got to find out if he slept with it though ???

Caro57 Special Educational Needs = SEN I think .
I have Christmas Ted who sits on a small chair in my bedroom
my dad bought him for me when I was 3 and he has been with me ever since he is 67 now and a wee bit faded all my DGCs love him.

EllanVannin Mon 01-Mar-21 10:56:11

I have a huge teddy by my bed and an old " display " doll in a high-chair. The doll is one of those big beautiful ones which sat in wool shop/ knitwear shop windows and cost me all of £1.50p donkeys years ago. A " proper " doll as in the 60's/70's

The GGC used to play with them when they were all here but it looks as though I'm stuck with them now and haven't the heart to get rid of them.

I don’t think it really matters , we have a cuddly toy that sits on the top of our bed after I’ve made it, and it goes to the bottom when we get in, ? very often lands on the floor, I don’t see a problem with it personally

Caro57 Mon 01-Mar-21 10:53:26

SEN to me is State Enrolled Nurse which I don’t think it applicable here - please explain

Tea3 Mon 01-Mar-21 10:52:50

I’m getting worried about my two now, neither was much interested in soft toys at any stage in their childhood.

Gelisajams Mon 01-Mar-21 10:47:29

I was concerned when my 14 year old son still had all his toys and cuddlies in his room and was reluctant to part with them. One day I came home from work and his room was transformed. All toys gone and posters on the wall. Everything was in the dustbin!

Photo didn’t seem to load first time.

AliBeeee Mon 01-Mar-21 10:41:13

My DS made it into The Times a few years ago with his beloved Eddie. They were both aged 31 at the time, the photo was part of an exhibition of adults with their first toys.

Oldwoman70 Mon 01-Mar-21 07:47:07

I gave my nephew a cuddly toy when he was around 2 years old - he is now in his 50s and although he doesn't sleep with it (I think his wife would object) he refuses to part with it.

BrightandBreezy Sun 28-Feb-21 21:44:07

My dgs is 16 and his special, from babyhood cuddly toy is still in his bed. When we go on holiday as a family the toy comes too. He doesn't take it when he goes on sleep overs to his mates' houses though grin

ValerieF Sun 28-Feb-21 20:49:27

Slightly sexist - in this day and age lol- would you be querying it if it was a granddaughter?

Nothing wrong with boys loving their cuddly toys. I was upset that my first grandson rejected any kind of cuddly thing from a young age. He slept with Thomas the Engine and only loved things with wheels. Then at 9 he watched Mr Bean and asked for a teddy. smile. Was thrilled ?

nadateturbe Sun 28-Feb-21 20:47:12

My 10 yr old GS has a collection of cuddly toys.

NanKate Sun 28-Feb-21 20:28:14

My 10 year old football playing DGS is permanently attached to his Moo. I suspect he will take it on honeymoon ?

MiniMoon Sun 28-Feb-21 20:18:05

My 3 grandsons all sleep with cuddly toys. They are 12, 10 and 8. The eldest boy often takes his out with him when they go on a trip.
