Colourful Men’s Cardigans

Both myself and OH having to isolate for health reasons and he has a special birthday coming up. The only thing he really wants is a heavy knit cardigan in VERY bright colours. I can find loads of brightly coloured Christmasy designs but none suitable for everyday wear. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

If you don’t knit yourself do you know someone who would do it for you. That way he could have his favourite ‘brights’.

Check out eBay, you never know. It might take too long to knit one.

Does he do zip up ones. Marks normally do chunky ones maybe not in summer.

Don’t know what your budget is?

Strikingly colourful cardigans and sweaters are very on trend since Harry Styles wore his J W Anderson patchwork cardigan.

There is a feature in yesterday's Guardian magazine about jazzy knits. Most heavy-weight cardigan patterns could be adapted.

Look for bulky cardigan patterns on Ravelry. I can see several free patterns there where you could incorporate say short row knitting to jazz them up.

The Guardian feature has a Paul Smith Sunrise Print costing £200 off the shelf that is calling me to replicate.

One of my favourite yarns is Cascade 220 100% wool which comes in a very wide range of colours and is available online through Wool Warehouse. I'd descibe that as a heavy DK but there are Aran and Bulky yarns in their range too.

Thanks NotSpaghetti this is perfect and the family are going to chip in to make it affordable

Thank you all for your excellent suggestions

Ooh! I like the Shetland one. I'd get it for MrB only he wouldn't wear it.

Careful annodomini posts have been deleted for less grin

I love both examples. The Shetland one is stunning. Thanks to "Not spaghetti".
I'd really admire a chap in such a colourful cardigan but sadly my chap is too reserved for flamboyance! Shame.

But I don't like the way the cardigan is a couple of inches shorter than his T-shirt. Looks as if he bought a size too small! Would have looked much better just a bit longer. however, the assorted-sizes-thrown-on-in-haste-when-the-fire-alarm-went-off look is everywhere these days.

I don’t know any colourful men. .

lemongrove Sun 30-May-21 17:27:34

DH is a colourful character but refuse point blank to wear a cardigan ( of any colour.)
Can you knit one for him, or find a friend or family member to knit one, there must be a pattern out there.

NotSpaghetti Sun 30-May-21 21:27:59

I have used Jaimieson's yarns (assuming this is the same one) and some are traditional Scottish wool and so on the scratchy side. Please check out the feel of the cardigan ahead of gifting it.

You could also google "bespoke cardigans" "fairisle cardigans", "jacquard knit cardigans" or "intarsia cardigans" - there are probably lots of others out there as well!
But I do love these ones I have to admit.

I wonder if there are any Kaffe Faccett designs? Those would be exciting!
