Sound of gunfire?

I was out in the back garden this morning and was alarmed to hear what sounded like an AckAck gun. two or three times.
For those who don't know, AckAck is short for antiaircraft. they were used in the war as protection from enemy aircraft.
I posted on our local community website and all but one of the replies thought it was a joke. The exception said he'd heard it too and thought maybe fireworks. Even our postman said he'd heard nowt.
Any othe ideas?

Farmers where I live have a gun type noise that is set off to frighten birds and animals from crops. Could be that.

We’ve had two days of birds scarers going off round us. I thought someone was trying to break down the walls of the house at first! When I went outside, it was obviously the scarers.

I must admit I had to resort to YouTube to hear what ackack guns sounded like. My guess would have been fireworks too, from that. But it seems an odd time of day for them, and even odder that nobody else heard the noise. I did hear some going off round here last night, after the England game. smile

I live close to Foulness island. When they’re testing some of those missiles the windows rattle.

Either a bird scarer or backfiring from a motorcycle which often sounds like that.

Could be lemongrove. Someone on our local website wrote : " a car with antilag backfiring".
Whatever that means.

Many years ago DH and I were cat sitting at DP's house, when as we went up to bed we heard what sounded like artillery fire, quite faint to begin with but growing louder. It went on for half an hour, probably longer. By the time it ended the the whole street was outside, some had been ringing the police without success.

It turned out that there was a fire in a Calor gas warehouse about 10 miles away. The gas canisters were heating up, expanding and exploding. The small ones went first and exploded within the warehouse, as the fire continued, bigger and bigger canisters exploded and began to go through the roof, which explained why the'bombardment' sounded quiet at first and then got louder. Nearby houses were badly damaged as exploded canisters went through their roofs.
