Perhaps I had a sheltered life but I never heard of this growing up or with any boyfriends. It wasn't until a girls holiday when I was about 40 that my friend told me she had tried it and another friend said her husband had tried but she didn't like it.
I found it hard to believe that people actually did it but now it seems one of the most common things young people do.

When my kids were young Emmerdale Farm, as it was then, showed a tupping ram being fitted with a die marker harness and then let loose with a field of ewes. My puzzled daughter aged 7 said “What’s that for???”. I explained it tells the farmer when he’s kissed the girls and they’ve made babies together. “Has daddy got one?”. She asked.

I can reveal that in my early teens I was given the classic Being Born, by the aptly named Frances Bruce Strain.

Atqui Sun 12-Sept-21 16:32:54

By “normal” I mean it’s expected .

Atqui Sun 12-Sept-21 16:31:53

I was a teenager in the 60s . I knew what oral sec was but was never asked to do it for a boyfriend .These days it seems that girls are expected to perform even if not in a full sexual relationship due to pornography making it “normal”’as with anal sex

Hi there I really wonder what planet some folks live on wink blush

What do you mean, Elizabeth1? That it’s unheard of / not to be spoken of - or that it’s so normal and common, you wonder why people need to ask? smile.

Crumbs, is the Body Book still around?

Newatthis Sun 12-Sept-21 14:31:45

I remember being in the back of a taxi once (age 20) with some raucous friends and one of them told a joke about a 'blow job'. I didn't have a clue what she was talking about and therefore didn't get the joke.

GagaJo Sun 12-Sept-21 14:18:28

DGS has a copy of The Body Book. He has zero interest. My DD wasn't interested in it as a child, either, but we are very open about the body/sex. My nephews and neices, who had a very prudish mum, were fascinated by it and seemed to think it was rude and giggled over it. Different parental attitudes I guess.

kittylester Sun 12-Sept-21 14:16:22

GA we had that book and also one called The Body Book.

I believe that for some years they have offered flavoured condoms, presumably so one can please a male partner while avoiding some aspects of the activity - fair enough.

I wonder if they do marmite flavour?

On a more serious note, I share the concern in this thread that Internet porn seemingly influences what young people feel they 'ought' to be doing. We all seek to please a partner, hopefully, rather than just achieving our own gratification, but I can see how the prevalence of 'alternative' or 'advanced' sexual activities on-screen may skew expectations away from simply allowing a couple to discover naturally what is pleasurable for both. In that respect, it has a chilling parallel with drugs, where it is clearly 'cool' to be taking this or that.

Lucca

My mother thought oral sex meant talking about it.

So did I! ?

Jaxjacky Sun 12-Sept-21 10:33:53

grumppa v funny! ??

grumppa Sun 12-Sept-21 10:27:17

Since this has morphed into sex education, I can reveal that in my early teens I was given the classic Being Born, by the aptly named Frances Bruce Strain. It was strictly technical, and for broader enlightenment the world had to wait for The Joy of Sex by Alex Comfort, a truly seminal work.
