Perhaps I had a sheltered life but I never heard of this growing up or with any boyfriends. It wasn't until a girls holiday when I was about 40 that my friend told me she had tried it and another friend said her husband had tried but she didn't like it.
I found it hard to believe that people actually did it but now it seems one of the most common things young people do.

Sago

This post reminds me of a holiday I endured with my Mother and MIL it was when Clinton was accused of having an affair with Monica Lewinsky.
The newspaper’s kept referring to a BJ, MIL asked what it meant, my mother piped up that she didn’t know either.
I had the joy of explaining……” do you think people in England do it” asked MIL “Surely not said my mother..

I kept tight lipped.
No pun intended. ?

Sago when I was about 27 I found myself explaining to my mother why one of her contemporaries had sniggered when referring to the fact that she, mother's friend and that lady's husband lived at no. 69!

My mother had been genuinely unaware of what 69 could refer to.

Oral sex has been in fashion at various times in human history, then either not practised, or just not talked about in the interceding puritanical times that seem unfailingly to come along after a particularly free- and-easy sexual era.

I believe that until 1969 when the Divorce Act (Scotland) was revised Scots Law repressively called both fellatio and cunilingus, and a whole lot of other erotic pastimes, "lewd practices" that could constitue grounds for divorce if you could prove that your spouse had forced you to participate in them. They are probably still legal offences in certain American states!

I was born in 1951 so oral sex had been illegal in many countries until the 1970s when I was experimenting.

I doubt many of us tried it then - it was talked about to a certain extent and as the laws concerning printing of what is now called porn and then were known as obscene publications was in the throes of being relaxed or abolished you could find fairly graphic descriptions with or without pictures!

I imagine most of us have tried some or other sexual practice that we promised ourselves never to do again, and others that surprised us by being enjoyable.

Forgive me for preferring not to go into details.

I'm sorry, but I find that hard to swallow. grin

In the 50s, if you were lucky, your mother slipped you a little booklet, but that was as far as it got, until you were able to start learning things for yourself! Very often you learned from your more knowledgeable peers. In many cases parent said nothing except dire warnings about "Not bringing your troubles home"
A school friend, whose both parents were pathologists / doctors was VERY knowledgeable, (So presumably the whole family were very open minded ) which helped us later, because we knew what was going on.
But on the subject, some like to give, some to receive, some both, some not all.
Literally whatever turns you on.
In some cases, because of medical problems, it may be the only form of intimacy available to a loving couple.

nadateturbe Sat 11-Sept-21 17:14:34

Sorry that sounded wrong. My mum was wonderful too!

nadateturbe Sat 11-Sept-21 17:13:45

Your mum sounds wonderful Mattsmum. Lucky you. I didn't find it easy to talk about it with my children thanks to my own upbringing. But I did impress on them the use of condoms.

M0nica Sat 11-Sept-21 17:00:53

The London Rubber Company, now Durex (I think) used to put discrete little ads in women's magazines, especially the weeklies, they promised that their little booklet would be dispatched in a plain envelope.

So when I was about 15 I wrote off for a copy of their little booklet which had the facts of life and details of the then available forms of contraception.

I was at a convent boarding school and this little booklet was discretely circulated among my friends. We all found it very useful. I learned the basic facts when I was about 8, told to me by the slightly older boy who lived next door.

I was in and out of hospital a lot as a child, so had a pretty good knowledge of male and female anatomy, of the juvenile kind.

I was one of those innately curious children and any attempt to hide information from me, only made me more determined to find out - and I usually did.

Mattsmum2 Sat 11-Sept-21 15:46:09

I was born in the mid 60’s and my mum was very open about sex and we used to sit and talk about it and relationships together with my brother who was a few years older, I think when I was 11. I think the openness allowed me to make decisions about sex that were safe and I passed this knowledge on to my children even buying condoms for them. I hope how I’ve behaved with my children means they have grown up to be confident adults and in particular about body image.

nadateturbe Sat 11-Sept-21 15:12:45

I knew nothing about Roman orgies. We weren't taught about them at school and teenage magazines didn't mention them.

BlueBelle Sat 11-Sept-21 15:08:56

I was 12 when I started my periods so around 1957 and just previously to that mum gave me a little book about the facts of life, but all the pages that went beyond menstruation had been carefully sellotaped down so I couldn’t read anything else ?bless her heart All I was told was you should never talk to Dad about it and don’t leave anything in the bathroom he might see

Had absolutely zilch sex Ed at my all girls school and with having no brothers I had no idea what it was all about I learned what a mans bits looked like from the art books in the library however they were in black and white and I thought the fig leaf was part of the anatomy until I had my first fumble at 16

Blossoming Sat 11-Sept-21 14:30:57

Isn’t it odd how most mentions of oral sex are centred on the man’s pleasure? Freud’s writings on the male fear of the vulva make interesting reading!

BBbevan Sat 11-Sept-21 14:19:02

We learnt about fruit flies for sex education, at school.? The only thing my mother told me was not to show a man my shoulders!!!!

She omitted everything else so that was presumably permitted

ExDancer Sat 11-Sept-21 13:33:13

I was born before WW2 so had no sex education at school (or home for that matter) apart from our biology teacher telling us about periods. We were 11+ age so many had already "started".
But being a farmers daughter I had made my own decisions.
I had noticed cows did it (well bulls actually) but, naïve thing that I was, never equated it to humans.
I can't say I care for the notion .....

Elegran Sat 11-Sept-21 13:26:02

Exactly, Luckygirl. When they are novices at sex, everyone else is a guru, so it isn't a case of doing something because it appeals to them, but because they don't want to be the only one not doing it. That leaves them open to exploitation.

Luckygirl Sat 11-Sept-21 13:07:32

Anything goes between consenting adults; but I do have a concern about young people (some very young) feeling they have to do whatever they are asked to do because everyone is doing it (or says they are) - whatever that "it" might be.

Kalu Sat 11-Sept-21 12:09:16

Having lived through the 60’s and being aware of ie; historical Roman orgies, I find it quite odd that anyone is unaware of oral sex.

Not sure there is much younger generations could teach us but, every day is a school day. ?

I wish I was a fly on the wall for that conversation Sago ??
Actually they sound sweet.

Jaxjacky

Sorry Zoe ?. I’d snigger too BlueBelle as I do when someone says they’re waiting for the 69 (a local bus).

I used to work in police admin and did a stint with the vice squad. When there was a bus strike they arranged a lift for me, my address caused much hilarity. Yes I lived at 69.

theworriedwell Sat 11-Sept-21 10:33:36

GagaJo

True. I did have to unroll a condom onto an undersized dildo though. NO idea why the school thought it was a good idea to buy them 2/3 of the real size. The kids didn't know where to look and I was making quips and trying to stay on the right side of acceptable.

Sounds like fun. My poor teacher who was said to have been caught in the act on school premises had many questions about what is an appropriate location, the morality of having sex outside marriage, the morality of sex with a married man. Poor woman, the first lesson you could see her face change as it became more and more obvious that everyone knew why she had changed schools.

Strangely I eventually heard all about it as I was dating a boy from her previous school. We had never discussed why any of his teachers had left the school (I know we lacked imagination) but when I told him about the fun and games in biology lessons he asked her name and when I told him he said, "Oh yes, it's true." and gave me all the gruesome details.

I suppose you could say she actually did a demonstration for her pupils at that school. I'm sure she'd never teach again now but the 60s were different.

It's not a joke. The first time a man asked to try it I was in my 50s and when I refused he told me his wife would never do it either.I think he had some luck with a younger girl. We had no sex education growing up in 60s.

This really made me laugh too. Was he still married to his wife? grin

JaneJudge Sat 11-Sept-21 10:31:06

Oh Sago, you have made my day grin

We had sex ed that was actually very graphic and I presume it may have been because there was a high teenage pregnancy rate at our school. I remember we did the condom chat and demonstration from Gagjo, then a birth video where ethe girl sitting next to me said 'it never comes out of there, does it?' and looked very pale.....and then we had to cross the corridor to another science classroom where they showed us slides on a projector of what various sexually transmitted diseases looked like on actual human private parts. At this point lots of students started fainting grin

Peasblossom Sat 11-Sept-21 10:13:18

“Whoever thought it would be a good idea to do this, probably the Romans”

Actually, it’s in the Old Testament.

King Solomon seemed to enjoy it - he went on about it a lot!

halfpint1 Sat 11-Sept-21 10:05:31

I was 6 in 1960 so grew up during the 60's. I can remember my dad turning the radio off be cause he thought the song lyrics were 'dirty'
Sex was never spoken off in my household and no it wasn't a religious one.

nadateturbe Sat 11-Sept-21 10:05:04

Zoejory how funny. But that brought back a memory of being told how some tiny animal reproduced. Can't remember which. And then our science teacher said with a red face "and human beings are similar" and hurried on to the next lesson. No one mentioned it afterwards.
So I did have some sex education!
