My son is getting married in March. I am of course giving thought to my outfit. However I have not been keen to go shopping during the pandemic! Lockdown is probably round the corner now so shops will be closed. I am in my 70s and have taken great care during this difficult time. My daughter married 7 years ago and I bought a lovely outfit , felt a million dollars on the big day. I am tempted to wear it again , it does still fit although a few pounds off might be a good idea! Should I wear it again or is that inappropriate? My DH thinks it is an ok thing to do and I considering doing that? I would appreciate your thoughts please.

I wouldn’t wear it again.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 22-Dec-21 13:49:49

Definitely wear it again, and the accessories. You know it looks and feels good and that’s not an easy combination to achieve for ‘occasion wear ’. No need at all to look for something else! If the Royals are happy to be seen in the same outfit several times it shouldn’t bother us! And you’re helping the planet.

I bought a beautiful phase 8 dress for DD1 wedding in 2015 - never spent so much on a frock but I felt lovely in it. Wore it to 3 more weddings and a cruise. Still have it, still fits and would wear it in a breath to DD2 wedding next year, alas it is a winter wedding and besides, I've changed my hair colour so it no longer suits me. Bought another phase 8 dress from ebay for a 5th of the price - worn once (apparently) and I love it, and will wear it many times I hope.

If you're like me and HATE shopping with a passion it is such a relief to have a go to dress/outfit that you know you look lovely in.

Enjoy your wedding Shelflife - you will look and feel a million dollars and not a bit of shopping stress to dread!

Well you know, if it's good enough for Kate Middleton to do, I'm sure it's good enough for you!
You know it fits, you know it's comfortable and you look good in it! You can wear different jewellery or buy a new bag and/or shoes, maybe a pretty wrap or cardi.
Your choice!!

Thankyou coastpath. I agree with you Galaxy it is indeed rare to find an outfit that is a good fit and makes you feel good. It is a difficult task. Thank you all , is’nt GN amazing! I have been getting wound up about this and that is unusual for me . This pandemic has a lot to answer for , keep safe and well everyone.

Coastpath Wed 22-Dec-21 10:25:46

It's a lovely idea to wear it again. To me it would feel like all the love and joy of your daughter's wedding was coming with your beautiful outfit to be sprinkled around on the day of your son's wedding.

My mother in law bought a lovely outfit for my wedding, she wore it again frequently at special occasions. It always made me smile when she wore it as it just suited her perfectly and she looked lovely. I actually think it's quite rare to find an outfit you love. Have a lovely time.

Even the Duchess of Cambridge re-wears outfits. It's The Thing To Do nowadays. Gofrit, shelflife ?

Thank you lovely ladies, you have made me feel much easier. I will wear it again. It is a long skirt , top and a lovely tailored jacket with a stand off collar. In a beautiful bluebell colour. Of course I still have the hat , bag and shoes, so will use them all again. It is foolish to be trailing round shops - if open ! and having to think about what fits, suits me and then have to search for hat, bag etc. and of course grooms mother outfits are expensive! I am a happy bunny now . ?

Yammy Wed 22-Dec-21 09:07:40

Wear it again,I did for two weddings pre Covid change your shoes or fascinator if you want to look different. wink

Shropshirelass Wed 22-Dec-21 09:05:04

It will be fine to wear it again, you could just team with different accessories to change the look slightly of you like. No one will mind or even notice that you have worn it before. Have a lovely day.

Grandmabatty Wed 22-Dec-21 08:54:56

Definitely wear it again. It made you feel good the first time so will make you feel good again. And you are re-using so saving the environment too!

silverlining48 Wed 22-Dec-21 08:52:49

Of course wear it again and have a lovely day.

Jackiest Wed 22-Dec-21 08:44:50

It is you who is important not what clothes you are wearing. You liked it so wear it again.

Calendargirl Wed 22-Dec-21 08:44:11

Oh, blow the photos!

My DD married in late 2001, my DS in Spring 2003. I wore exactly the same outfit for both. Didn’t change a thing,

Shouldn’t think anyone else noticed or cared.

Pointless for me to have two wedding outfits, not much opportunity to wear such things, it was a linen type shift dress with matching coat, and appropriate hat and shoes,

Oldnproud Wed 22-Dec-21 08:39:19

Another vote here for wearing the same outfit again.

Kim19 Wed 22-Dec-21 08:36:31

I think it's a wonderful idea to wear it again. What's wrong with feeling like a million dollars twice?! Why not run it past your daughter of you have the slightest reservation? I suspect your son won't even notice. Further well done on it still fitting you. All sounds amazing to me. Enjoy.

JackyB Wed 22-Dec-21 08:26:59

For the sake of the photos maybe you should wear something different. However, as Violetsky suggests, wear the same outfit but vary it with different accessories. Maybe a hat or fascinator to distract from the dress (or suit or whatever the outfit consists of)

mumofmadboys Wed 22-Dec-21 07:44:15

Yes, definitely wear it! You look good in it and recycling is what we are all aiming for.

Ashcombe Wed 22-Dec-21 07:39:09

I would say go ahead and wear it! I bought a beautiful Oriental looking outfit from Monsoon for DD1's wedding in 2003 which still fitted me in 2015, when I remarried to DH olddudders so I wore it then! Only one guest recognised it and was envious as she could no longer fit into the outfit she’d had for my DD1's wedding.

It’s also kinder to the planet if we reuse things. I hope you have a wonderful day when it comes round. ?

Nannarose Wed 22-Dec-21 07:22:59

I certainly don't buy / make a completely new outfit. I think if it is a lovely outfit, then wear again.
I tend to do as VioletSky has suggested - because I love fabric and I love playing around with different things.
Without criticising anyone else's taste or decisions, I personally make things out of good fabric, to last many years, and still wear good clothes that are 20-25 years old.

tanith Wed 22-Dec-21 07:20:08

Absolutely agree, wear the dress you know suits you and you’ll be comfortable in, no one will remember or care you’ve worn it before.

Lauren59 Wed 22-Dec-21 04:53:01

I might add, my son was married last summer and daughter will be married next summer. I plan to wear the same nice dress to both

Lauren59 Wed 22-Dec-21 04:51:27

Oh, please wear it again! Seven years is along time, nobody will remember and if they do, so what? If you already own a dress that is nice then wear it again! Even the royals do it.

Shelflife Wed 22-Dec-21 00:11:04

Thank you Doodledog. You are probably correct , he won't remember what I wore at his sister's wedding! Nor would he care if he did remember. I have more or less made my mind up , just wanted to test the water and see what others thought. You too have a lovely day in May , good luck with the hunt for an outfit.
