I’m off over the border soon and have been asked to bring the usual items - potato scones, black pudding and square sausage. Problem is we don’t ever buy square sausage.

Any idea where I can get the best quality square sausage?
I’m in Glasgow.
TIA

A question for your Welsh butchers Calli. No idea why Lorne sausages can’t be bought in your area too.

Callistemon21 Sat 23-Apr-22 16:04:31

Why aren't all sausages square?
They'd be so much easier to cook.

A warm welcome to our two new honorary Scots
25Avalon and AreWeThereYet ? Slainte Mhath?

I am craving butteries now but no hope I suppose finding them on the outskirts of Glasgow. ?

Esspee Sat 23-Apr-22 15:45:57

Everyone is welcome AreWeThereYet. All you have to do is love Scotland.?

Wheniwasyourage Sat 23-Apr-22 12:19:37

Yes indeed, 25Avalon and AreWeThereYet. We keep saying that we need immigrants, so you're very welcome!

Grandmabatty Sat 23-Apr-22 12:16:26

There is nothing to beat a roll on square sausage with hp sauce, especially if you have a hangover! Avalon you are very welcome to be an honorary Scot. I'll get the kettle on.

AreWeThereYet Sat 23-Apr-22 12:15:16

PS Sorry I can't help with your quest Espee . Hope I'm allowed to post, being half Scot ?

AreWeThereYet Sat 23-Apr-22 12:13:13

I'm interested in a recipe too - there are a number online, quite different in ingredients, but as I've never had it I don't know what it should taste like. I really don't knowwhy I've never had though, I've spent enough time with family in the Borders and Edinburgh ?

25Avalon Sat 23-Apr-22 12:07:38

Thanks Marydoll that’s very generous as I’ve found most Scots to be. I’ve also looked up recipes for Lorne or square sausages so I reckon I could have a go at making my own.

Any Scottish grans got any recipes they recommend please?

Marydoll Sat 23-Apr-22 12:00:06

25Avalon

The Hairy Bikers had square sausages on one of their trips to Scotland and absolutely raved over it. My apologies for not being Scottish - I used to do a sword dance with two crossed pheasant tails on the floor when I was little so can I be honorary?

Avalon, consider it done!

We are just about to have onion Lorne in rolls for lunch in morning rolls, I cannot wait!!!
The only thing is, I have lost my sense of taste. I hope I am not disappointed. sad

Couldn't swear to it, grannydarkhair, but I'm pretty sure the Dundee ones were not Ross's. My DS managed to get some in a Tesco delivery (somewhere near Falkirk, but I don't know where the delivery came from) and they were Ross's and were just like the ones we get.

grannydarkhair Fri 22-Apr-22 22:04:34

Wheniwas Were the ones you got in Dundee from JGRoss? If they were, then I wonder why they weren’t as good as the ones you usually get? I have been craving a decent buttery since I last posted ?

Wheniwasyourage Fri 22-Apr-22 21:13:12

Sorry, should have said that JG Ross is in Inverurie, so we can get the train there on our outing! Or a bus with our bus passes, of course.

volver Fri 22-Apr-22 19:30:59

Ye could be richt, m'quine wink

Maybe we should have a GN outing to Buchan to get supplies of butteries/rowies/cookies. (Delete as appropriate.) grin

Wheniwasyourage Fri 22-Apr-22 19:15:24

The best butteries ever, IMO, were made by Smith's of Huntly, but sadly, they went out of business (Smith's, not butteries). We get JG Ross's ones now, from Tesco and they are not at all bad. When we got some in Dundee (also from Tesco) they were ok, but not nearly as good. I think perhaps they need to be made by Doric speakers to be really good. smile

volver Thanks. It’s a bit far to pop to Peterhead just for a buttery ? I don’t shop in a Co-op very often, I used to have one very local to me, but need to take two buses to get to one nowadays. I’ll have a look next time I am in one.

grannydarkhair

I’m further down the east coast, and haven’t had a good buttery in years. They are all flat, hard and basically tasteless. That’s both prepacked ones in supermarkets (various brands) and loose ones from baker’s shops. Are the ones you enjoy from a particular place volver

Peterhead grannydarkhair. But I only get them when I go home, which isn't that often. The ones I had today were from a Co-op in Fife, they weren't too bad.

Good luck for tomorrow. I hope your GP has a solution for the side effects Marydoll?. Sleep well x

Marydoll Tue 19-Apr-22 00:02:09

Some side effects' Kalu, going to phone GP tomorrow. Glad to hear you are making progress, albeit slowly. ?

Kalu Mon 18-Apr-22 23:53:50

I don’t have a Ninja Marydoll, just a husband who cooks a very good breakfast. ?

Doing much better thanks. Still hobbling about with the stick but I have mastered the stairs so, more progress. Hope you are feeling, at least, a bit better each day. x

Marydoll Mon 18-Apr-22 23:45:52

Try air frying them in a Ninja, much healthier and it alleviates the guilt!

Evening Kalu, how is my neighbour up the road doing?

Kalu Mon 18-Apr-22 23:42:56

A friend brought me butteries from Aberdeen recently. Truly delicious. Those in local supermarkets here are tasteless and as you say Marydoll, tasteless.

I am now craving everything you have mentioned esspee but I grill rather than fry.

Marydoll Mon 18-Apr-22 23:42:48

I found a recipe for them. My cardiologist banned me from eating them. They look so tasty!

grannydarkhair Mon 18-Apr-22 23:42:24

Marydoll Can’t say that any I’ve tried were quite as bad as that ?
