I’m off over the border soon and have been asked to bring the usual items - potato scones, black pudding and square sausage. Problem is we don’t ever buy square sausage.

Any idea where I can get the best quality square sausage?
I’m in Glasgow.
TIA

I’m further down the east coast, and haven’t had a good buttery in years. They are all flat, hard and basically tasteless. That’s both prepacked ones in supermarkets (various brands) and loose ones from baker’s shops. Are the ones you enjoy from a particular place volver

Thats exactly how I found they were, I was so disappointed. The fishermen could have repaired holes in their boats with them, they were like concrete and tasted of cardboard.

I should probably make a trip to Aberdeen, rather than Morrisons! ?

volver Mon 18-Apr-22 21:23:13

I'm not sure Marydoll I've never noticed them being tough but I can't ever remember not eating them ?. Apparently they were made to last so the fishermen could take them with them when they went to sea.

Marydoll Mon 18-Apr-22 21:16:25

I've tried butteries, but wasn't keen. Are they meant to be tough, or was I unlucky, Volver?

volver Mon 18-Apr-22 21:12:33

Sliced sausage where I come from ?. But I'm a veggie so I haven't had any for years.

Tonight though, a buttery for my supper ?

Marydoll Mon 18-Apr-22 20:56:47

Not one of those supermarket rolls, but one from the baker's or paper shop!

Marydoll Mon 18-Apr-22 20:53:30

welbeck, it's different. Now I am craving a morning roll, with square sausage and a cup of tea!

welbeck Mon 18-Apr-22 20:36:05

couldn't you just batter an ordinary sausage with a pair of butter pats.
showing my ignorance here.
and the fact that i trespassed over the OP's ordinance.

Thank you, I might look for one when they are back in season {!} as I cannot eat proper haggis, although DH likes it.

Esspee Mon 18-Apr-22 20:24:35

If it is of any help Callistemon Simon Howie does a vegetarian haggis which is available all year round. I get it from Morrisons. To be honest it doesn't taste anything like haggis, more like a nut roast but is very nice. I serve it with onion gravy, neeps, carrots, petit pois, and mashed potatoes with cream, butter, lots of snipped up syboes and a topping of toasted pin head oatmeal.

Callistemon21 Mon 18-Apr-22 20:11:21

DH can't wait!! grin

Esspee Mon 18-Apr-22 19:50:22

Callistemon21 It is indeed the breeding season. New season haggis will be in the shops from 12th August.

What? No haggis?
Or is it the breeding season for haggis?

Zennomore Mon 18-Apr-22 15:53:39

☝️Not square sausage but a good recommendation for a cross border food parcel

Zennomore Mon 18-Apr-22 15:45:41

I can highly recommend these……….

paddyann54 Mon 18-Apr-22 15:41:18

I think some branches of Iceland sell itMokryna but cant say if its a decent one or not

Callistemon21 Mon 18-Apr-22 15:33:29

No, sadly not, Marydoll!

It's Tescco Finest sausagemeat bought at ? and I found it when I was sorting out the freezer before Easter.
So not a Lorne sausage.
But if you're really desperate, Esspee ?

Marydoll Mon 18-Apr-22 15:27:09

Was it made in Scotland, Calli? If not, it's not genuine Lorne sausage! wink

^I love it in a Scottish morning buttered roll, with a cup of tea.
That was before we were told it wasn't good for us.^

Callistemon21 Mon 18-Apr-22 15:25:06

I've got some flat sausage meat in the freezer if that's any help!

nipsmum Mon 18-Apr-22 15:20:13

Most independent Scottish butchers make good Square sausages. Don't buy from the supermarket unless they are labelled from a Scottish butcher and give their name.

Thank you Esspee. It sounds interesting but never to be found in Manchester?

That must be why expats usually have a list of things to be brought from home.

Marydoll Thu 14-Apr-22 00:13:32

Espeee, ^Marydoll. England does count as abroad, doesn’t it?

I couldn't possibly comment! grin
