What Were These Called? (Pottery animals)

Hello!
Little glazed pottery animals; about 6cm long and quite chunky; lots of different ones; came in a little cardboard box.

They were in all the gift shops in the 70s and 80s.
As a little girl I had several, they were very pocket money friendly.

Who made them?
It’s driving me potty (pardon the rubbish ‘pun’)

Katek, I had a tortoise, but it was a bit bigger than the other Whimsies. Unfortunately it got broken.

I'm going to ask the DGC if they still have them (bet they went to the school Christmas sale!)

I bet that is where the ones I gave and also bought for the gc have gone! Just hope they are loved by whoever bought them.

There is nearly always a little box of them on someone’s stall at car boot sales in our area. My DD loved them when she was little. They just fitted in her hand and she often just held one.

We used to collect them from Christmas crackers. Haven't seen them for years.?

Fanny I have an Otter and a Fox, I shall have to hunt them down and post a picture.

FannyC - there is a tortoise on eBay atm!

I had lots, I used to buy one each week in my teens. I don't know what happened to them in the end. I slightly regret not keeping them.

They have lots at an antiques centre I occasionally wander round and I sometimes feel tempted to start another collection. Then I remind myself that I am trying to declutter.

Lots on eBay- I bought some for gc. Our Oxfam shop has a few. I think they are great for children to collect.

Ah, we had those as well, in boxes of Red Rose Tea. Thanks for bringing back memories! I don't remember whatever happened to ours, I'll have to ask my older sister, she has a memory for these things.

I do not think they make them anymore but try an antiques fair. We always have a box of Wade Whhimsies on our stall. They sell well to children getting bored while parents fossick. We sell them to children for 30 or 40 pence. Adults pay about £1 each.

Hellogirl1 Fri 10-Jun-22 17:14:51

I still have about 15 Wades Whimsies on my gaybox. A few of them, kittens and bush babies, were free gifts with Fairy liquid around 1963/4. I took them to an Antiques Roadshow a few years back when they came to Boston, was told they were worth around £1 each.

I have a little red squirrel which peeps out of a pottery bird box, ornamental only, on my conservatory wall.
It must be many years old.
The only one left from my youth.

Caleo no not Pendelphin. I had loads if those rabbits.
All with those upward looking eyes. I think my mom must have like them, because I wasn’t that crazy about them.

I’ve just bought a little Wade Whimsie spaniel smile

Caleo Thu 09-Jun-22 11:47:42

Pendelphin ? I used to collect them. Be careful. There are Chinese imitations that just don 'get' it.

I had a Whimsy Pekinese dog. It was white with pale grey bits. Whatever happened to it I wonder?

Grandyma Thu 09-Jun-22 11:16:20

I remember them!! I had something called a Gay Box on my bedroom wall to display them on.

Mine were older than that
I should have kept them!! shock

You should have!
We could have come to an arrangement ?

StarDreamer

Did some small ones get given as "free with" gifts, sellotaped to something at some time, years ago?

Magazines maybe?
You used to get free stuff on a regular basis years ago.
I remember being given t shirts and all sort in pubs in the 1990’s.
And getting samples of things in the post.
You don’t get anything now like that… (more wistful nostalgia)

I had about 40 or 50 of them, collected over years. Now given to the DGC but I'm not sure if they still have them, hope so.

They used to be in Christmas crackers

There were Wade Minatures at one time.

Though those may have been smaller.

annodomini Thu 09-Jun-22 10:05:24

I collected them in my teens. Wonder where they are now...

I think I need a trip down 70’s Memory Lane…
