Chocolates and biscuits

My husband is diabetic and is extremely overweight. He's also undergoing tests on his heart. Naturally he's been told to lose weight.
There must be something about overweight people that makes other people think that chocolates and biscuits make excellent gifts for Christmas and birthdays. He's ended up with 4 boxes of shortbread and 4 of beautiful chocolates.
Mostly from customers.
He's quite capable of eating them, but really mustn't.
The obvious solution is to regift them - but who to?
Do charities want such things?
(they all have 'use by' dates in Aug/Sept)

The local food bank would be delighted with them. Such a treat for people who can’t afford such things.

Donate as a raffle prize for some fundraiser but watch out of 'best buy' dates.

Better that than doing what I have just done which is to eat a bar of praline chocolate, very quietly so as not to draw attention to myself from dh. It was delicious ( and there is a second unopened one waiting ) but having joined the apples @nd pear thread feel just a bit ashamed of myself.
You could put them where most supermarkets provide a bin fir contributions. Do it soon, in case your dh is tempted.

Yesterday, the shelves of the community larder at my village community centre which usually contain cereals, tinned and other packaged long-life food were piled high with chocolates and other sweets, biscuits and Panettone. The centre manager said it was villagers dropping off unwanted gifts.

A Foods Standards Agency licence is needed to sell food products so something like this or a foodbank would be your best bet.

Food bank or hospice.

Our food bank is overflowing with the generosity from our donors, but we are always happy to take more 🍫 and 🍪 🍪 please.

My policy for chocolate, as with cheese, beer, gin and other things that I really like and could make myself even more globular than I already am if I were less scrupulous, is to have the best quality I can find but only in small amounts and only occasionally. So a slab of 70% or even 85% dark chocolate from Hotel Chocolat once a month, which I can spin out over a few days, beats Cadbury's Dairy Milk or Galaxy any day.

Yesterday, on the pretext of my Christmas and Hogmanay going awry and it being a perfectly foul day in Glasgow, I treated myself to a piece of Queso de Valdeón from IJ Mellis's cheese emporium in Great Western Road. It's a pungent semi-soft part cow part goat heavily blue-veined cheese from the Spanish province of León that comes wrapped in sycamore leaves and it takes your head off. Beats any supermarket mousetrap hollow but you really don't want too much of it at a time so there's no temptation to scoff the whole piece at one go.

I never buy sweet biscuits because I know I won't be disciplined enough not to scoff them even if they are Dark Chocolate Gingers by Border Biscuits of Lanark (be still my beating heart) or my favourite Lemon Melts by the Island Bakery of Tobermory. The best quality biscuits are actually all the more moreish and so are probably evil.

Food bank would love them. I know of a way to put your husband off biscuits for life. I brought some sugar free biscuits for a diabetic friend who was coming for lunch so we could have one with a cuppa. They where horrible and only edible when dunked into our tea.

Local services would probably really appreciate them doctors surgeries and schools or local businesses you use.

Working in a school I can't tell you how much it brightens our day to find someone left a bag of goodies for us in the staffroom lol

There is an app called Olio, this allows you to offer food or things in your local area.

I have just donated ours to the school coffee morning being held tomorrow

silverlining48 Fri 06-Jan-23 18:49:49

The local hospital? I was on ours this morning and despite the dreadful situation the staff were helpful, cheerful and friendly. They really would appreciate the thought.

Silverlining beat me to it.... hospital, or care home would love a treat.

kittylester Fri 06-Jan-23 20:33:22

Staff at a hospital? Raffle prizes? Old people's home?

Patsy70 Fri 06-Jan-23 20:39:38

Raffle for local fundraisers, Hospice, Food Bank, local coffee meetings? They would all really appreciate your generosity. 😊

So many places to donate unwanted chocolate and biscuits. Top of my list would be local care homes or to local food bank or to local animal rescue groups run by volunteers out in all weathers. Our bin men are fantastic and so to the men who work at the local tip. No shortage of suitable places.

I’d like to stop eating them too. I’m not diabetic, I have been prediabetic so really should know better but the sweet tooth is rapidly making a comeback…..and the weight is creeping on again.
It’s me that has a self destruct button. So it’s me who mus5 sort it out agin I suppose.

Witzend Sat 07-Jan-23 19:28:11

The other day we donated a superfluous Christmas tin of shortbread to the food bank.

I agree. I’m just finishing the last of the Christmas chocolate but I still have cake and pudding to eat. I’ll have to back to
Friday being treat day and 5:2 diet or similar for the rest of the week 😁

If you have a local coffee morning. They would be glad of boxes of nice biscuits. Ours is a pay-what-you-like for your tea or coffee and sometimes the funds are a bit low and the next month's biscuits are not luxurious.
They also pass tins of sweets around when it is someone's birthday so again would be pleased with any donations.
