today I craved a cheese and onion toasted sandwich so made one in the frying pan.
It was good, but took ages.
Now I am pondering whether to buy a proper toasted sandwich maker. I had one years ago which was almost impossible to clean, even though it was smooth inside.
Does anyone have one of these machines which they could recommend please ?TIA

I used Aldi's Thins in the Crimpit and wonder of wonders they fitted in my Dualit. Still have lots of recipe testing to do yet though.

I have a George Foreman too, and think it makes the best toasties. I also have the cages for the toaster, and use them for things like crumpets and muffins which would be difficult to get out of the slots without them.

I love grated cheese, onion and apple ones. You just grate everything and mix it together (you can bind it with a bit of mayo if you like, but it's fine as it is), make a sandwich and toast. I butter the outsides of toasties as it makes them crisper, but it's up to you.

I use a George Foreman health grill. Make the sandwich, don’t butter the outsides, and pop in the grill. Cooks quickly and is easy to clean.
Obviously you can use it for healthy grilling too 😂😂

I do this too. The George foreman is older than most of my children!

We've no room for extra toasters. We make toasties easily. Aluminium pan, melt butter, add bottom bread, add fillings, add top bread, butter top bread. Flip when colour we prefer, finish cooking 2nd slice, serve.

Thank you 25Avalon.

We have a breville sandwich toaster which I bought to replace the previous one I had for over 30 years ! It wipes clean but the places are also removeable if you wish to give them a thorough clean .

I don't understand how you can get a sandwich bag in a toaster. My toaster holds two single slices of bread but a sandwich would never fit.

You can buy “ thick & thin “ toasters which adjusts to the thickness of the bread .so will take sandwich toaster bags . Think most toasters have this facility these days so can accommodate everything you want toasted .

Joseanne you put your sandwich in the Dualit toasting cage after buttering it on the outside - panic will this ruin the toaster, double check instructions, this is definitely what it says, ok give it a try. So insert cage at top of toaster opening, press handle and in it goes as it just fits. When it’s done you may need to lift the knob up as the weight is a little heavy for ordinary automatic lift.

Has the butter smeared everywhere, has melted cheese spewed out? No the butter has gone into the bread and helped it brown. Any cheese fall out is in the bottom of the cage in the metal trough.

BTW Going back to bags, they generally tell you not to butter inside the sandwich.

I flatten the toast bag a bit then put it in the toaster open side upright it works fine no spillage. I have just an average four slice Brabantia toaster and I use toast bags in my George Forman grill.

This is the thingy I meant.

Chestnut and Auntieflo thank you. Silly me, above, I've never had much spacial awareness. So that's my idea of toasting my croque monsieur in a bag in my Dualit gone unless 25Avalon can help me out?

I got a Crimpit and one for my Daughter, there was an offer on
It is in the bottom drawer ! If I filled it with even one slice of cheese it didn’t fit in my toaster
I’m back to using my sandwich toaster , I like my sandwiches nice and full

Auntieflo Sun 08-Jan-23 09:11:24

Chestnut, we have a 2 slice Dualit toaster, and I am sure that a sandwich, in a bag, would never fit in.
I have now got a Crimpit, not tried yet, but DD has one and loves it. She can take it to work and have a hot sandwich lunch.

Mines a Breville toaster and the metal plates come out so it’s easy to keep clean. We have one most days for lunch. Cheese and tomato is my favourite 😋🤗 filling.

I’ve got a Breville Sandwich & Panini Press, it’s stainless steel outside, and non stick, flat adjustable plates inside, it adjusts to thickness. I love it, it’s used frequently as you can toast single slices, toasties, waffles, panini etc, and it just takes a wipe to clean after. I think it was about £30 from memory.

I use this a lot, mainly the toasted sandwich and panini plates. Plates are detachable and easy to clean. Fastening allows for deep fillings.

I’ve had a sandwich toaster for many years. It is very easy to clean, non stick and you just wipe it with a damp cloth. They are cheap, any big store would sell them. I put a bit of butter on the outsides of the bread as well as inside because I like them well toasted.

BigBertha1 Sat 07-Jan-23 22:37:22

Now you've done it I'm in in bed and I want cheese toastie!

Joseanne Sat 07-Jan-23 22:35:02

I've never seen those toastie bags but I am keen to try them to make my croque monsieurs.
I've got a Dualit and a metal cage thingy 24Avalon and I use it a lot for hot cross buns, but you can't use it for say cheese can you because it would all ooze out into the toaster?

Hellogirl1 Sat 07-Jan-23 21:39:22

Haven`t used mine for ages. Never had any problems cleaning it, but the main trouble was closing it after putting the sandwich inside it, had to press the lid down till it was done.

kittylester Sat 07-Jan-23 21:32:52

We have a sandwich press. No nooks and crannies.

25Avalon Sat 07-Jan-23 20:27:12

I don’t think so. In the toaster both sides get done at the same time heating and melting, if cheese, the contents.

SOGran Sat 07-Jan-23 20:23:46

toastie bags, what a great idea, thank you
can you put them under the grill?
