Is it better to claim at 66 while still working or wait

glammanana Thu 12-Jan-23 16:56:18

I don't know if it is better or not but I am a "bird in the hand" sort of person.

You will get interest if you wait but it is not as generous as it used to be. Look on the website where you can see all the options.

I waited and get a little extra. If you don’t actually need it yet…..

Too many variables (what you earn, the tax implications, how long you plan to defer for etc) plus only you will know whether you expect to live long enough to make it worth while.

Sure I read that Martin Lewis said only do with caution.
Take it and invest it?

crazyH Thu 12-Jan-23 18:31:48

If you expect to live long enough, defer it. But we don’t know that, do we ? I would take it now and save/invest it.

Notsoold27 Thu 12-Jan-23 18:54:02

If you defer for a year you would get a slightly bigger pension but it would take many years to get the difference back. I would just claim at 66.

Having had an OH who was diagnosed with Parkinsons before he even got a chance to put a toe in the joys of retirement, I would say take the pension - you do not know what is round the corner.

Fleurpepper Thu 12-Jan-23 19:30:33

OH went to a lecture about pensions.

The stats were

if you retire at 62- you will have 18 years

if you retire at 65 it will be 18 months.

Averages, of course - but his decision was made on that day. He has had 15 years so far.

I'm due my state pension this year(still angrily thinking how I've had tens of thousands kept from me by the labout governments interference).I telephoned the DWP to ask about paying to make up any missed contributions and the amout was about £4,000.I told them I wouldn't bother.I'd rather spend that money now having fun!!!

I bought some 'past added years' for my occupational pension. That's been a good thing for me. I needed to fill some gaps from when I had to work part time.
I just took my state pension at 66. Also furious at having to be a WASPI!

I’m no financial whizz but I have a friend who is. He said take your pension because you’d have to live well into your 80’s to benefit for waiting

I took a risk - and it wasn't calculated, it was the inability to get round to sorting out all my documents and paperwork after leaving Norway to retire back home in the UK.

I deferred my pension for 13 years, and took a lump sum which was quite a tidy amount. But on reflection, I think I was rather silly to do it because as Luckygirl3 says - you don't know what's round the corner.

,,, and I didn't know that two successive cancer diagnoses were round the corner - which is when I decided to make the claim. I was lucky, very lucky because I'm still here to tell the tale. But it was not a clever thing to do, and I wouldn't recommend it.

The reason I was able to defer for so long was because I had a State Pension from Norway - their pensions are fairly generous in comparison to ours.

A bird in the hand, etc...

You don't know and I'm a "bird in the hand" sort of person too.
