I need something better to sit on….
We have stressless leather currently but it’s so old and worn out, it was secondhand. It’s really time to replace it. Anyone got any ideas on something really comfy, nothing too low. We have to travel to look so would like a headstart.

Pleased for you that you found something.
Update.
We also found a beautiful two and three seater from Alexander &James. These will last a lifetime and the leather is probably more nubuck than shiny.

I realise this is an old thread but had to comment how pleased I am that G-Plan come so highly recommended.
My furniture, two seater and three seater are so comfortable, most people remark on it.
It is 13/14 years old now and and looking slightly past its best but I can’t find anything as comfortable.

Definitely you both have to try all the sofas you can in different shops, everyone needs something.
I need back support and I don’t want to stuff cushions behind myself every time a sit down, I don’t find deep seating comfortable, also I want my feet touching the floor and head support. I personally have had 2 leather sofas for 35 years and have had no problems with slipping nor wear.
The Which magazine has a recently printed a new report.

I’ve ordered a G Plan Vintage Sixties - the Sixty Eight from John Lewis. It’s a large 3 seater so you could stretch right out on it which I wanted because I’m tall. It’s a higher seat than my present one which I couldn’t use when I was post op from a hip replacement. I chose this one in the store. The fabric colour on the website is nothing like the real colour.

I have no idea where you live but in our area ( North Bucks) we have an enormous furniture store where you can spend hours and hours as they have every make and style. We have just changed our armchairs for higher, easily moved ones more suited to our advanced age! Think about seat length, back height, firmness of cushion, all a matter of personal taste. Our old ones needed a crane to push them to one side!

I'm another supporter of G Plan furniture.

Our suite must be 10 to 12 years old, and still comfortable. It's not leather, but we regularly remove the cushions and wash in the machine. They look almost new again.

Recommended.

My best tip…….If you are trying chairs or couches in a furniture showrooms, make sure you are wearing indoor clothes and flat shoes, not heeled boots like I was when we chose our leather suite 20 years ago. The depth of the seat (base of spine to back of knees) should be just right, and outdoor clothes affect this!

We had aMultiYork sofa. The seats were forever moving towards the edge. Then we had new covers and the problem was no more.

Errol have a factory shop as well as selling on eBay. We bought our dining room table from there saving nearly £600. We will be going back to have a look for lounge furniture soon. They are in Princes Risborough.

I dislike leather chairs. Squeaky and slippery. I whave never sat in one yet that I found comfortable. But I can see that if you have pets they might be a good idea.

Very cold to sit on too. I herited two, gave one away, tolerated the other as couldnt afford to change it. Got rid soon as soon as I could. Friend is always telling her husband not to sit in such a way as it will stretch the leather. No thanks.

I have never yet bought a sofa or armchair from Ikea that wasn't comfortable, relatively cheap and durable, so I suggest you start there.

We had one where the cushions slipped off it every time you sat on it and it was a nightmare. I tried everything including velcro but I swear those cushions were alive! It was a shame because it was lovely to curl up in the corner of it where it was so big. When my Grandad couldn't get off it anymore where the cushions were so unstable, we changed it.

We once had an M & S sofa where we also had cushions that slid off every time you sat down on it. It was a satiny material. We lasted about a year with that one. It looked nice though.

We bought a large corner sofa from Furniture Village last autumn. We were concerned about adverse reports concerning the company. We could not be more pleased with our purchase. It’s very comfortable and you do not have to lower yourself down into it. Naturally, I have command of the the matriarch’s corner seat. 😉

After years of back problems from using dilapidated Parker Knoll armchairs we splashed out on two electrically powered reclining chairs and a fixed two seater sofa. The model is G Plan Kingsbury, with leg, lumbar and headrest adjustment. We chose not to opt for being catapulted out when getting up!
I'm very pleased with my chair. DH is not so sure about the reclining facility as it needs sockets for both chairs and they are very heavy for him to push around.

There are a lot of brand names being touted about here. Go to a good, bricks and mortar furniture shop and ask for advice. I run one ☝️ in Keswick and we sell British made furniture that can be made to your exact requirements. A beech frame, coil springs and choice of fabrics and cushion interiors is what you need for comfort and longevity. It can be very daunting trying to make the right choice, if you don’t get good advice try another shop.

We deliver countrywide too 😉

I love my new high backed settee from John Lewis with material that wipes stains off using bottled water and 0% interest . Keep covered with a warm fleece cover that I wash to protect from grandchildren etc . A lovely mid teal colour that won’t show stains too . Couldn’t face re-upholstering my large settee again -me too old-took 3 years 30 years ago - so had it sent to my son and am sure his sons will continue the job of wrecking it he and his brothers started.

Recor do very sturdy chairs and sofas. Got rid of my Ercol, had become too low and soft even after a revamp. Recor have solid wood frames. Chosen with view of needing somethin solid and stable for getting up off a chair in the not too distant future. Got it in leather covers, all zip off if I wanted to replace.

We gave up leather furniture and replaced with two G Plan fabric sofas. One is a two seater electric recliner which I use as DH hated recliners. He used the three seater. Sadly only the recliner gets much use at the moment. They are lovely though and well made.

We were plainly eco-conscious years before it became a thing. Our sofa, Wesley Barrell, was bought over forty years ago, has been recovered twice, had new cushions and now sports a William Morris design loose cover. Our sitting room chairs are even older - two Parker Knoll, reupholstered recently, and one bought soon after we married in 1962 and recently recovered. I hate the thought of furniture going to landfill, though certainly it would have been cheaper to just replace our sitting room furniture, and at least I am still living with stuff we chose together all those years ago.

I tend to slide around on leather.
I love my upholstered reclining chair on which I can sit or lie back and snooze.

Ercol chairs are incredibly comfortable and support so well. They are expensive, but you won't have to buy chairs again unless you get fed up with them!
