Temu ‘known for its rock bottom prices’ investigated.

Temu, the most downloaded and used app in the US is being investigated. I wouldn’t touch it with the proverbial barge pole and hope it doesn’t get the success in the UK it seems to have garnered in the US. These unrealistic prices come at a very high cost. www.bbc.com/news/business-65990529.amp

Ironically, it was a poster on GN who recently mentioned Temu. Up until then I’d never heard of them!

The "introductory period" has lasted a long time. Their object with the very low prices is to establish themselves as a competitor to Amazon. They work in much the same way, taking a profit on everything sold through their organisation by individual firms, so they are not taking any entrepreneurial risks. They can't lose! It is the makers and smaller organisations who risk not making enough on the transaction to keep them in business.

Well, in my defence, I haven’t bought anything that I could buy locally and I use charity shops all the time! I absolutely agree with you that there’s a lot of ‘want’ rather than ‘need’ involved in what we all buy!

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 14-Sept-23 13:06:37

Don’t buy anything from them. We all have far more stuff than we need. We might like something but do we really need it? If we do need a particular thing it may well be found in a charity shop.

Squiffy Thu 14-Sept-23 12:05:37

Yes, I fear that may be so Gsm, but what’s the answer?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 14-Sept-23 11:58:06

I expect people working in slavery have to produce good quality products for fear of repercussions.

Squiffy Thu 14-Sept-23 11:49:23

What happens to the workers if people don’t buy from these companies? Is a pittance better than not earning anything? I don’t suppose there are welfare benefits for them. angry It’s a dilemna.

I confess to having bought from them because their prices were stated as ‘introductory’ offers and I assumed that, after the introductory period, the prices would rise considerably.

I haven’t bought clothes, but household type items and rucksacks and the quality has been fantastic. So far…!

rafichagran Thu 14-Sept-23 11:08:48

I do not buy from Temu, but I do not agree that people are cululabry ignorant and put price before ethics.

Some people are very affected by the cost of living and they are on benefits, low wages, or just living of a full state pension, so the politics of it is not a consideration, if it is cheap they buy it. I know some posters will say they get low wages/pension only and don't buy from it, but that is personnel choice.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 14-Sept-23 10:51:15

There’s getting clothes made for a pittance by people who receive a fair wage by the relevant country’s standards, and there’s slave labour and total lack of human rights. I wouldn’t touch Temu with a bargepole.

Charleygirl5 Thu 14-Sept-23 10:09:25

M&S and other companies are not a lot better at getting clothes made for a pittance in another country and charging a lot here.

I have coffee with 2 GNs who have bought from Temu so I did also. I bought a long sleeved colourful jumper but I would have preferred it to have been made with something other than nylon. It fits well and is well made, I only want it to keep me warm in the house. My cardigan is long and colourful but again 100% nylon which I do not like.

they have not hassled me since delivery about 3 weeks ago but I do have Ad blockers.

Relieved to say thus far not heard of them. Apple News a constant however.

Ali08 Thu 14-Sept-23 09:00:18

I am constantly receiving notifications to join, even by friends who I've already told I'm not interested!!

Allsorts Wed 06-Sept-23 19:45:32

I don’t buy on line, never heard of Temu, but it does sound awful.

Mollygo Wed 06-Sept-23 10:40:43

I have an ad blocker, but friends from various parts of the world, keep sending me warnings about using Temu, so I thought I’d share them.

You don't need to download an Ad blocker , Simply go to Settings - Pop ups + Redirects- back to Settings - then slide toggle to block ads.

What search engine do you use. If it’s google they were ahead of Temu years ago with tracking
In fact they are now known as. tracking company.
Don’t think for one moment I’m defending Temu, I’m not but google has become the acceptable face on the internet but they are no different.
If anyone wants a search engine that doesn’t track use DuckDuckGo.

There is a lot of controversy about China-based Temu. Here’s a recent posting regarding Temu:

Seemingly overnight, everyone’s talking about Temu (pronounced “tee-moo”), an online shopping app that boasts deals that seem too good to be true, like $17 wireless earbuds, $1 “gold” necklaces and $23 wedding dresses.
Over 50 million Americans have downloaded Temu since it launched state-side in September 2022, after it gained traction with expensive Super Bowl ads promising to let you “shop like a billionaire.”
Today, Temu is the most popular shopping app in the U.S. behind Amazon. But most of us don’t know much about the app’s true origins. Reader Daniel Mayer asked an important question, “Is [Temu] something we should be concerned about?”
So, I did some digging. And as it turns out, yes, you absolutely should be. Here’s what I found:
Where did Temu come from?
This isn’t some fly-by-night operation. Temu is based in Boston, Massachusetts, by PDD Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: PDD). PDD is headquartered in Shanghai, China.
PDD also owns the e-commerce platform Pinduoduo headquartered in — you guessed it — China. So, Temu is a Communist China-based app and site.
What you need to know before using Temu
First, you’re buying goods directly from manufacturers in China and other parts of the world. That’s why shipping times are often 12 days or longer. The prices are low because the goods are cheap. The pictures of what you see advertised may not be what you actually get.
Temu’s BBB rating is 2.21/5. Reviews at TrustPilot are interesting, with 38% 5-star reviews and 41% 1-star reviews.
But that’s not the worst of it.
Temu is downright dangerous.
The app is a clever, pervasive digital stalker. As you shop, Temu monitors your activity on other apps, tracks your notifications and location and changes settings.
🛑 It gets worse. Temu gains full access to all your contacts, calendars and photo albums, plus all your social media accounts, chats and texts. In other words, literally everything on your phone. This is scary
No shopping app needs this much control, especially one tied to Communist China. If you’re using Temu, delete the app from your phone ASAP..

You’re perfectly correct MOnica the whole world can’t stop buying from China, it’s not possible, but buy a little less 🙏

M0nica Sat 19-Aug-23 09:36:11

For some people, for many people, price comes before ethics every time and they are culpably ignorant because they do not ask questions where they know they should because what they are offered is cheap, cheap, cheap.

There is a very well-known saying, 'if it seems too good to be trues, it is too good to be true' and many people choose to ignore it.

It is virtually impossible to avoid buying anything made in China, but for many people buying less would be a good idea, especially when it comes to clothes and household goods. Most people have sufficient and overconsumption contributes to global warming.

Try Wish I’ve bought from them for years most of it is very good only thing it takes ages to deliver but I’m going to buy from them again I bought loads of Christmas presents last year things, like good looking pearls and key fobs

Wish is no different to any of the companies mentioned above.
Wish is a platform company like Etsy.
If you think you’re buying from an ethical company, you’re delusional.

I have two friends one a solicitor one a retired military personnel who buy off Shein and temu both love them I ve never see anything on Shein to tempt me I did buy one pair of bottoms off Temu on one of these friends recommendations when Temu first started advertising and they are cxxx, horrid material like plastic…. never again

I don’t get any adverts on my iPad or iPhone and I don’t have an ad blocker either
The only place I ve ever seen adverts is Facebook an there they do bombard with Tamu never seen any adverts for Shein

Blondiescot Sat 19-Aug-23 07:58:10

I've always been wary of the 'too cheap' places like Shein and Temu, but I do know people who have bought stuff from both and been pleasantly surprised. Still wouldn't tempt me to buy from them though. Plus, I think when these places are so cheap, it does tempt some people to buy lots of things they don't really need - more tat which will invariably end up in landfill.
