I have been enjoying crocheting Granny Squares and fancy making a cardigan. I lack patience and wonder what the simplest way of joining them together would be. I have looked on line of course but some of the ideas seem a bit too intricate for me. Any tips would be gratefully received, thankyou.

It really depends on the look you want, whether, say, you want the join to be a visible part of the garment.

The simplest and least bulky is a sewn join. Place the squares right sides together and stitch through the back loops or both loops if you prefer. Make sure you start at a corner so that the squares align.

Several methods shown here, sewn and crocheted:

The problem with a cardi is hat even the simplest and 'blockiest' needs some sort of shape. That means cricheted some 'squares' in different shapes.
I would consider a poncho / shawl / wrap to begin with.
Ravelry is a good site

I disagree. There are lots of examples online where the shape is boxy and made entirely of squares. This one, for example from Etsy:

For a nice invisible join I would sew the squares together using mattress stitch as in this video.

For a blanket I'd use Join as You Go (JAYG), a lovely method of joining, but I've never made a garment which would need something less loose, I think.

Well, thanks - have never seen anything like that and I do a lot of crochet!

I have never made a garment from granny squares but have made countless throws and I prefer to double crochet these together. I just love the neat finish.

Thanks, will take a look. Yes it is a boxy cardigan.

KK have a look on Gathered and there are plenty of granny square patterns . And free patterns for what to do with them. Raveley ( can't think how it's spelt) but lot of my craft group have free crochet and knitting patterns for free.

Register on Pinterest and ravelry where you will not only find methods to join granny squares but tons of ideas and patterns for free, yes they do bring up a lot of paid patterns but just as many free ones. both sites are easy to navigate and I spend many a happy hour on both or either. Especially good if you need inspiration or just to cheer yourself up. I think it was Einstein who said that being creative is intelligence having fun. Happy searching and have fun. The next thing you'll be doing is searching all the online wool shops for gorgeous wools.

Attic24 has posts on her blog about sewing squares together

ps, if you type in granny square clothes patterns, in the Pinterest or Ravelry search button you will find tons of ideas, warning though it's very addictive....

Thanks everyone, I have looked at the suggestions and as I am of very little patience, I am going to sew them together. Nearly done enough to complete my project. Of course ‘what it looks like in my head (brilliant and obviously making them for friends)’, will probably look like a ‘crocheted jumble sale’. BUT, I have been enjoying doing the squares so thats all that matters really! 😊

MiniMoon Fri 13-Oct-23 14:15:39

Here's a cardigan that I crocheted a couple of years ago. I joined the squares using chain stitches and slip stitches. I had forgotten about it hanging on a clothes rail in the spare bedroom.

GrannaKaye Fri 13-Oct-23 14:33:17

Mini Moon that is a lovely garment! Would you happen to remember the pattern or have a link?

PennyBee Fri 13-Oct-23 16:02:25

There's an excellent Facebook group called Crochet for Beginners UK. Worth having a look at it, and everyone is very helpful. I'm a beginner too and have had to ask a few questions myself!

Have a look at Bella Coco, lots of youtube clips, you can stop and start as you need
