I keep seeing adverts for mascara for mature women that promise lovely long thick eyelashes, makes like Prime Cosmetics, Thrive and even Look Fabulous Forever. At the moment I use Maybelline, but honestly, are these more expensive brands aimed at us any better?

I have been using Prime Cosmetics Mascara for the last six months or more and like the result, but it is very hard to get off, which I don't like. Even with baby oil and water. You have to rub and rub and obviously that is not good for the lashes and can't be good for the eyes either. I will try the recommended Lancome when I have finished what I have. How long do people keep their Mascaras?

Rapidlash didn't work for me. I have found using a dark eye shadow means I don't need so much mascara and it's softer than using eyeliner. Will try the dotting between lashes.

Since it’s a nuisance to take mascara off and my eyelashes seem to fall out easily, I don’t wear it anymore either unless it’s a very special occasion. Merry Christmas everyone!

I have found something different which works for me. I use Rimmel Scandal Eyes Exaggerate Eye Definer. I buy taupe as I it's flattering colour for me. I go round my eyes with it. I then only use any brown mascara if I'm off out anywhere. I am really surprised at the result.

I have just started using Avon mascara and its the best l have ever had. Available on line or thru a rep. Give it a try.

These days I use Charlotte Tilbury mascara in Dream Pop brown colour, it never smudges and doesn't clump. However, the appearance of my lashes is greatly enhanced by Rapidlash serum. It really does make them grow!

trouble with all mascaras they have a tendency to smudge ..eg when you sneeze...looks charming on a young dewy face, rather tragic on an old one. just the lightest touch of kohl at the roots is enough to brighten and wears off gradually.

AmberSpyglass I agree. I've got green eyes an recently bought a plum-coloured one, and a vivid purple one. I had lots of compliments about both colours.

This is very helpful and a reminder. I'm away and the mascara (Elizabeth Arden) I brought with me has all junked up and dried. I've added a spot of tap water to soften it! No time to mess about so I have just ordered Lancôme Hypnôse from JL to pick up in Waitrose on Friday. Thank you.

If your mascara dries up, soak the tube in hot water for a while.

A dark plum is brilliant for green eyes.

My DD gave me Dior Show I looked like a doll. Now I'm using Clinique High Impact and at the moment it's going well. My eyelashes are turning grey like my hair so usually use black but I like a dark navy with blue eyeliner in summer.

I use uklash mascara and use their serum at night. And can recommend both . The serum has made my lashes thicker .

I use Max Factor , Maybelline or Revlon .
Ideally , baby oil will take mascara off nicely and is best followed with micellar water to remove the oily resudue .
If your eyelashes are looking sparse - use an old washed mascara wand to treat them with a tiny bit of vaseline as a conditioner .
And forget trying to read afterwards !

I’ve never heard of the brands in the first post, so I suspect they’re just jumping on a bandwagon. Something like Lancôme, Mac or Chanel that has a proven track record in good quality products is much more likely to be beneficial for older lashes, which are more brittle and tend to get sparser with age. The trick is something moisturising that gives a bit of volume without clumping.

I use Lancôme Hypnose mascara, it comes in waterproof and non waterproof, I find the brown-black suits me. Wouldn’t change to another one as I am very happy with the results and wearability.

I'm a big fan too.. But I have recently bought on a recommendation MAC Extended Play.
It has a slimline brush and the brushes are slightly apart so the coverage is not clumpy and as it goes down more to the root makes your eyelashes look longer. Comes off fine, think I'm going to continue with this after many years with Lacome.

Just bought a MAC Extended Play to try. £15 with free postage from Debenhams online.

I have scrappy eyelashes so no mascara however much I spent nothing would make them thick and luxurious but most mascara I tried did make my eyes runny and sore.
I posted asking advice on GN and someone recommended Poundland, and am happy to say eyelashes though still scrappy my eyes are no longer sore.

Done! Mavala is on its way to me as I type!!

AskAlice Wed 20-Dec-23 13:49:57

Oh, thanks Germanshepherdsmum. I'll have a look online and might treat myself!

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 20-Dec-23 13:47:38

I used to use navy mascara. You can still get it from Look Fabulous Forever and Mavala (waterproof, on Amazon). Now it’s the navy eye pencil.

AskAlice Wed 20-Dec-23 13:44:56

Does anyone remember when you could get mascara in navy blue and green. I liked the navy one, it was a bit less harsh than black, but the green always looked like bits of grass growing from your eyes!

Clinique High Impact for me when I wear mascara now, which is not very often. It builds nicely and doesn't clump or smudge.

VioletSky Wed 20-Dec-23 13:40:01

I have moved from black to brown and it looks so much better

Happygirl79 Wed 20-Dec-23 13:34:59

I've tried lots if these mascaras for mature people. None of them are any different from each other and over rated in my opinion.I think it's just clever marketing

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 20-Dec-23 13:31:08

I abandoned mascara for dotting eyeliner between the roots of top and bottom lashes and much prefer the effect. I use Hourglass which is cruelty free.
