Anyone manage without a conventional oven

Our very old oven is no longer working efficiently so we are wondering if we could manage without an oven.
Should we buy an alternative perhaps? We no longer make traditional roast dinners although occasionally we do make pies and lasagna.
Decisions decisions confused

Our ancient oven needs replacing but will have to wait until we have our new kitchen fitted so we have been coping very well since Christmas using the Remoska and microwave!

Mojack26 Wed 14-Feb-24 16:29:17

Remoska??? What's that?

I have a halogen one that plugs in and sits on the worktop, I manage well enough, add to it a combination microwave for when you have more to do and you should be just fine as long as you have either worktop space or storage space.
I also have a drew and cole multi cooker but only use either pressure setting for tattoos and veg or the soup setting.

We couldn't. I bake daily.

I could probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve used my main oven in the last few years. I’ve had a Panasonic combination microwave for years, upgraded once, and use it daily. Combination, as others have said, can produce just about anything in a fraction of the time it would take in a ‘proper’ oven and probably beats air fryers for baked potatoes. What’s not to like about crispy jacket potatoes ready in 15/20 minutes?!

My oven broke down 3 years ago just after my DD bought me a ninja air fryer. I’ve never replaced it. I do everything in the air fryer, slow cooker, stove top or microwave. My oven is very handy for storing pots and pans now.

Guess it depends on the number of people in the household. I haven't used my oven for nearly two years now. I have two Mini Airfryers (one was an unexpected gift!)., a slow cooker and a microwave.
The latter will need replacing before long, I suspect, and I might geta combi one. Love my Airfryer and make up recipes for it! (I bake potato automatically (!) in my microwave; scoop out contents from non-crispy skin. Add butter and cheese and chopped tomato then place potato in my airfryer for 4/5 minutes on 199 C or until top is brown a)nd crisp. My baked potato looks, and is delicious!) I am on my own and dont need an oven now.so I use it for storage!

At present I would be very unhappy to be without my oven. I use it more than the hob most days. I realise it would be more economical to have an alternative but I’m not ready for that yet. Also I wouldn’t want any other appliances such as an air fryer on my worktop.

Only use my oven when doing alot of baking, use airfryer & microwave the most. If I had to replce my double oven would go for a single oven & combi micro wave & airfryer. Would give me some extra worktop space.

I haven’t had a big oven for years.
I have a Sharp Jet Convection and Grill and 2 air fryers. M/W is Large enough to cook a med sized turkey or a bone-in leg of lamb.
It has a turntable which you can take out and use the 2 supplied metal shelves.
One air fryer has a rotisserie, best juiciest chicken ever; my other one is a Ninja - air fryer, pressure cooker, slow cooker and much more. I highly recommend all of them.

I don’t own a cooker anymore Ive a microwave a ninja air fryer ninja soup maker and a bought a electric ring but I don’t use it lol 99 per cent of my food including roast dinner with homemade yorkies etc is all done in my ninja get yourself a air fryer or a halogen oven no bending down as it’s on your work tops. and so much cheaper to use than a oven

I have a combined grill/oven/microwave and for 1 or 2 portion cooking this fits with me. I do also have a fan oven for larger portion meals eg family visiting, and an air fryer, again fits with smaller amounts and is quicker than the micro/oven.

Ninja 15 in 1. Todays a chicken it a joint if meat , lasagne if you choose the correct dish is great. Baked cakes. pizza won’t fit in unless you cut it but that isn’t a regular for me. Also has a pressure cooker, steamer and slow cooker function.

I’m 80 next year and not as mobile as in earlier years. Bending over to take hot things out of the oven started to become dangerous. When the oven became unreliable, I opted for a combined microwave. This, together with a cheapie Lidl air cooker, will cook anything. I feel much safer these days when lifting hot things out

My immediate answer would be yes! I have had a combination microwave oven, plus, for the last few years, I've had an air fryer. In the last nine years since moving into this flat, I used the traditional oven just once and that was when I had company and needed to cook several pizzas at once.

I can make a roast in the combination microwave oven and you could cook pies and lasagna, too. Initially, I didn't have an air fryer but find it most useful and cheaper to run!

The oven is still useful - as an extra food cupboard!!

Same here.

Cannot use an oven & stove top due to RA & OA in my shoulders, arms, hands & spine. So have used a succession of counter top ovens along with a microwave for many years. Can cook most food using a combination of both. Cannot imagine how to go back to a standard cooker now!

DeeAitch56 Wed 14-Feb-24 11:52:20

I have a combo microwave (though Ive never bothered to learn how to use it other than to use it other than zapping ping meals and defrosting food) I do however use my Air Fryer daily instead of my oven as for just the two of us it’s ideal

i bake bread in a cast iron pan on stove top, you have to use a diffuser under the pan to stop burning, and a tea towel under the lid works a treat. lots of youtube videos on it.

We rarely use our big oven. Mostly we bake, roast and grill in our Sage "Smart Oven Air Fryer" - basically a tabletop oven with a very high speed fan. It's pretty good for almost everything we like to cook and has lasted without needing anything other than cleaning for 3 1/2 years so far. Big enough for a roast chicken and I've baked the odd cake in it too.

We have a combi microwave, an air fryer and an conventional oven which mostly only gets used for roast dinners, which at the moment is our Sunday downtime. A nice walk, followed by joint preparation of dinner and a couple of glasses of wine whilst listening to Celtic Heartbeat. We use the air fryer most and as a result have saved money on our electricity bill. Definitely worth having!

I wouldn’t want to be without an oven. I use it for cakes and roasts, lasagne, etc, but I’ve also got an air fryer, microwave and slow cooker. All of these are used frequently as each of them have particular strengths.

Greyduster Tue 13-Feb-24 10:07:20

I only use my main oven to cook a family Sunday lunch when I need the extra capacity it provides, and for cakes, but I have a microwave, a slow cooker and an air fryer oven, with shelves, which cooks pretty much anything you can cook in an ordinary oven or grill. Steaks and chops don’t dry out, and it’s especially good for fish. It also makes better, lighter scones than my conventional fan oven and small cakes and puddings. It has saved me a fair amount of money I would say.

dragonfly46 Tue 13-Feb-24 09:47:29

I use my oven every day despite having an air fryer and microwave.

harrigran Tue 13-Feb-24 09:42:17

I have two ovens which are used every day but DD only has a table top oven, she seem to manage fine but all celebration meals like Christmas and birthdays are spent here anyway.
I do think a kitchen would look strange without an oven.
