Just wondering whether very fine thin hair is better cut in a slightly longer style, say just below ear lobes, all one length.Or maybe a bit shorter in layers? I hope you understand what I'm getting at.It sounds a little confusing!😟😟

My Granddaughter will shortly reach 21. I want to buy her something special but can't ask her because she'll just say she wants money. Her mother and other grandparents buy her expensive jewellery, I can't compete there, so no point.
Any ideas for a special gift?

Razor cut layered bob, adds body and is easy to style

I expect Delia made a decision as OP is from February.

Old thread.

Hope OP decided what to do with her hair.

My silver locks are fine and curly. I used to have my hair cut and blow-dried regularly but during the lockdown my layers grew out and I found that a relaxed style suited me. I keep it short, have got rid of my hair-dryer and now simply scrunch it after shampooing. It does its own thing!

Ha ham J52 - I think this sort of thing looks great on older women. It looks perky somehow, and alert.
Not like the "nan perms" of my youth!

This is the sort I'm thinking:

My hair looked like this for most of my life. I used to spend ages drying it straight! 😂
Now it’s finer it’s easier to manage.
Different hairstyles suit different face types. Go with what you’re happiest with.

I've got fine hair and my hairdresser advised me to have it layered to give it body. I thought I'd like to grow it longer but she suggested to keep it to chin level at the sides and slightly raised around the back - and I've had some compliments AND it's easy to look after.
In my youth I had very long hair which I stuffed into a short wig sometimes which was fun. I also went for cropped hair when I was thinner in body shape and it was so easy to look after. Alas I'm shorter now and a little weightier so I take advice more readily!!!!

In my youth (long ago!) I had fine copper coloured hair and was a model for Vidal Sassoon , who used to show his students on me. So he would give me a haircut and then I had to stand up, put my head down and shake it from side to side and then stand up. The hair would fall back to his great cut, and that was the secret, The very well cut hair always looks better and shapes well. My hair is white now and perhaps even finer, and I still stick to that. Find the best hairdresser you can and check them out. Then the good cut will help with both the shaping and the style of your hair. I swim most weeks to help my back and so only spend my money on the good cut, not hairdo s etc and my hair is expected to look decent with just reasonable shampoo and conditioner. Then it is a matter of brushing it or combing it in the morning and forgetting about it.

Have you thought about a perm?
That way it will lift your face and give volume?

Delia, I daresay if you went to six different hairdressers their replies wouldn't be the same. Do hope the hairdresser who said Mary Beards hair was a mess was asked their opinion before giving it. . Never seen leggings like she has on though,
In my experience a chin length bob suits finer hair unless you want JudyDench style which I like but would bore me after a month. My hair has become finer as I get older and my hair longer as its so versatile, its collar bone length, I can put it in a messed up style, tie it back on an off day so it looks neat or wear it in a bob.
I think your hair is very important as you can’t feel good in an outfit if you feel your feels dreadful. A lot of very short styles have to be very precise and cut every 4 to 6 weeks which i don't want.

I recently had my below shoulder length hair cut into a short layered style. How I regret it, I don't feel like myself anymore. 😒 it's been 3 weeks and still can't get use too it. Already I'm thinking of growing it at least to chin length. My advice, don't go short try chin length.

I'm delighted Mary Beard wears her hair as she wants to.
It really is only a mess when being blown around!
I'm sure mine is too!

kircubbin2000 Tue 02-Jul-24 19:46:20

I've just read that a hairdresser told Mary Beard her hair is dreadful. I'm surprised she didn't already know that but it seems she is being stubborn and leaving it long and wispy!
A good cut can make such a difference.

My hair is thinning. Someone suggested Plantur shampoo and I do think it works. It foams up in a strange way unlike other shampoos. I can't really describe it. But, after washing my hair, I do think it looks thicker at least for the next day or so.

If your hair looks good, you feel good.
Not unimportant!

Mortonclough Tue 02-Jul-24 12:15:01

If you have very fine, thin hair, it's usually better to keep it a bit longer, like just below your earlobes, and all one length. This makes your hair look thicker. If you cut it shorter and add layers, it can sometimes make your hair look even thinner. So, try keeping it longer and one length for a fuller look.

kircubbin2000 Wed 28-Feb-24 19:28:50

The Judy Dench style is ideal for thin hair. Long thin hair is ageing.
