Narrow gusset in knickers

I've always bought M&S knickers but lately am finding the gussets far too narrow. Can anyone recommend decent knickers that have decent coverage but don't look like "granny" knickers. I'm a size 8-10 but I don't want thongs. I want proper coverage to bend down gardening in without constantly pulling them from where they've ridden up.

I always wear Sloggi. They are made from cotton and there is nothing skimpy about how they are made.

I buy them online direct usually when there is an offer on and they last for years.

I am struggling as my normal M and S midi knickers are no longer sold, they say their shorts have replaced them. They are not the same and do not fit me.

I have complained to M and S many times about this! Midi pants were great and now we have shorts which are not the same and a useless replacement.

One assistant I complained to said she would report my complaint but she wished she had a pound for every similar complaint. She said she has personally taken hundreds of complaints.

I buy mine from Bon Marche. Pack of 3 for £10 - I think

M & S and Tesco have pants with a good width of gusset.

The last time I was in M&S I found myself standing in front of a sign advertising Period Pants.

My mind wandered off to Downton Abbey and even Jane Austen before the penny dropped!

This thread is gransnet at its most brilliant. I agree with nearly every comment. I buy period pants from Amazon. Have resolved to go through my knicker draw and chuck 90% of the old stuff. Someone send this thread to M&S.

I agree about m/s pants that bit has become uncomfortable especially if wearing a panty liners...I shall quietly say gusset Miss A, have you a suggestion we can use instead of gusset🤣🤣 I agree it's an awful word

Wedgies, gussets - I've come over all faint!

I'm another who gave up on M&S knickers after trying several styles because of the narrow gussets and the way they formed miserable, uncomfortable wedgies.

About a year ago, I discovered Wirapa and they're great. (I was going to say that I now wear nothing else but that might be open to misinterpretation 😅)

There's a variety of styles and they're so comfortable - lovely soft cotton, well made and defo no wedgies. They wash well and the sizing seems accurate. I'm a 14 - 16 and the size L is a perfect fit.

Hadn't really thought deeply about this until I bought some knickers from Matalan for my elderly mom. Then I realised how narrow the gussets on my M&S underwear has become. Worth checking out, they seem a good quality and so far, a month in, are washing well. I'm going to try some myself. There were some decent in the sale at about £1 a pair!

I stopped buying knickers and bought the shorts style instead, they are similar to Spanx control but very lightweight.

I might try a size bigger in the fitting room, over my own knickers obviously. Maybe the cut has changed and a size larger would fit me better.

maddyone Wed 29-May-24 12:01:02

The trouble is, bigger size knickers have a tendency to slip down because they’re too big in the waist. I might just have to resign myself to midi knickers all the time.

I find the high leg knickers from M and S to be very comfortable but in a larger size. I suggest you try one or two sizes larger than you would normally choose. Annoying I know but it works for me.

Visgir1 Wed 29-May-24 11:09:11

I take my Grandmother's tip, size up in pants , I'm a 14 but buy 16 high leg , nothing worse that your bum eating your knickers.

maddyone Wed 29-May-24 10:39:17

It’s not just the gusset, it’s the cut of many knickers. I like high leg knickers because they used to fit well, but recently M+S have made the cut of the leg so it’s half way up your bottom. I’ve had to start wearing midi knickers to get a better cut around the leg.

I buy mine from sainsburys

My daughter used to bring me knickers from S Korea. Beautifully feminine- stretchy and lacy and with a very wide gusset. Proper harvest festival pants 😉 Will have a look online and see if I can find them.

I'm another with continence issues. When I had a broken arm in a "stookie" I had a carer come in twice a week to help me shower and wash my hair. She was a gem, The best thing she taught me was to wear 2 pairs of pants at a time - one facing forward and the other "Back to Front". This combination holds the pad firmly in place. Try it, it really works wink

Bramblewitch Wed 29-May-24 09:57:43

Totally agree. I had a persistent cough and wear mini pads all the time and yes they hang over the edge of the gusset . Irritating.

Primrose53 Wed 29-May-24 09:39:40

I think you need to shop carefully and not just pick up your size. I bought some from M and S and they are too narrow and uncomfortable. Got some in Asda and they are much better.

Another factor in the disappearing gusset is that for those of us who need to use pads for those “ oops moments” as the advert states, the gusset is so narrow the pad overlaps and is not comfortable or satisfactory.
I hope that isn’t TMI but very important for some of us.

I think a lot of us can relate to that problem.

I buy bamboo knickers from Amazon. There’s a choice of waist heights and the gussets are a sensible width.
