Bates Salve

When I collected my 9 year GD from school this afternoon she handed me a note from the school saying she had been treated for a cut knee. I started to think back to my childhood in the late 40's/50's. Never the most graceful of children, I was frequently limping indoors with cuts and grazes. My Mum would fetch her biscuit tin which held strips of old flannelette sheeting. Once these sheets had started to wear thin again, after being turned sides to middle, they would end up as dusters, floor cloths and bandages. Mum then produced her stick of Bates Salve. It resembled the red sealing wax sticks but this salve was black. Holding it over the bandage she would set light to the salve and let the hot drops drip on to the bandage before slapping it onto the cut. Do any GN's remember this torture? My GD had a gentle dab of Savlon and a bravery sticker. I can't help feeling hard done by. grin

Callistemon .Timothy Whites was where I brought all my bottom draw kitchen things from. Thanks for giving me back that memory.

I bought some of mine in Boots. Collected cutlery bit by bit after my would-be MIL asked about my bottom drawer. Didn't get very far with it because, Dear Reader, I did not marry him.

The cutlery is still in use today though.

TCP or germolene for cuts & grazes. Mag sulph drawing ointment. Camphorated oil rubbed on chest for coughs & colds. Sprains were treated with a poultice made from comfrey leaves. My dad would boil a couple of onions & eat them & drink the liquid to prevent a cold. A teaspoon of Virol every day, not sure why any more.

At primary school our grazes would be dabbed with Magic yellow. No idea what it was maybe iodine?
My mother used detail at home I even got bathed in it.

Germolene for cuts . Warm olive oil for ear ache. Could only buy at pharmacy in little brown bottle with cork top. Milk of magnesium for tummy ache.

My grandad gave the cat Beechams powder when it was ill.

Mom said it was 6d to visit the doctors and shilling for home visit. But their GP still came out if the patient couldn't afford it . Said he must have been owed thousands. Thank goodness for the NHS.

Olive oil came in little bottles from Boots or Timothy Whites and Taylorsand was kept in the bathroom cabinet.

It certainly was not for cooking or drizzling on salads!

My MIL used to put Hydrogen Peroxide down DH's ears when he was a little boy to 'clear his ears'. She recommended it to me but I never used it.

This is the sort of thing we still need. It's a pity they don't seem to sell it. Or, if they do, they've changed the recipe and/or the name and its probably not half as good anymore!

I was recently surprised to find Snowfire cream still being sold, although that was online.
I wonder if it still has that wonderful smell?

BlueBelle

Whiskey on toothache, hot bag of salt on earache,
Dettol or tcp for cleaning wounds, whiskey dabbed on for toothache…. Syrup of figs for toilet issues, arrowroot for the runs

Please explain this hot bag of salt?

Is Savlon liquid still available? I used to put it in the bath for cuts, grazes etc. and, of course, following giving birth.

It was Vaseline in our house .

The nurse practitioner at the hospital recommended using Vaseline on scars.
I'd bought Bio oil but she said "No, no, use Vaseline".

Basilica ointment for drawing splinters and poison. I still have a small jar about 40 years old. You can still get it online I think.

Black jack, a rub with a gold ring or a bit of butter on it.

yogagran Thu 04-Jul-24 18:43:00

It was usually iodine in our house!

I remember the GP ( remember them?) giving my mother a small bottle of white powder which had to be sprinkled on to a huge infected lump I had on my shin after falling off my bike. I think she went a bit overboard though as she kept using it after the swelling went down and I ended up with a teaspoon size indentation on my shin. (I still have it!)

Altissimma Thu 04-Jul-24 16:27:06

Yes, I have a small tub of magnesium sulphate paste, very useful for getting splinters out of skin. Dab some on a plaster and leave the plaster on over the splinter overnight which draws the splinter out of the skin. You can still buy this from Boots!

Dettol at home and witch hazel at school ( I loved the smell of the latter). Milk of magnesia 😝 made regular 🤣 appearances too.

Dont know what happened there but - Amazon sell Germolene as I recently found.

Thank you SillyNanny321

Our local Boots didn't stock it. "If it's not on the shelf we don't have it" 🤔

I think my mum used Dettol for everything 😂

I remember that they always used Dettol at school, carefully diluted. My mother used Savlon, which I still use.

grandtanteJE65 Thu 04-Jul-24 16:07:49

Cetavalon dabbed on with cotton wool in my home. Then a plaster or bandage according to how serious the graze or cut was.

We discovered when my sister was three and cut her knee badly falling in the garden that she could not feel pain. She limped in, and said, "Look, Mummy I have jam on my knee!"

I think the present day Germolene is a cream and different formula. The old stuff was ointment so better for skin damage like paper cuts as not water based. Oh remember the tins, had forgotten.

JaneJudge Thu 04-Jul-24 15:54:26

magnesium sulphate really is a miracle wonder cream!

Thisismyname1953 Thu 04-Jul-24 15:52:29

Talking about magnesium sulphate as a drawing ointment, another 20 years ago I had a breast abscess which had to be drained in theatre and packed with a ribbon dressing . To have it repacked every day was painful and it took weeks to heal . A few months later it became inflamed again and I didn’t want to return to the hospital. I was a nurse at that time and bought some magnesium sulphate and put some on a dressing and went to work . While working on the ward I felt a minor explosion on my boob . When I got home that night and undressed , all the gunk had come out of my boob and simple dressings for a week or so healed it completely.
I hate having to go to the doctors.
