Hello
I’ve recently been diagnosed with silent reflux and and a small hiatus hernia. Also a torturous oesophagus. As I was finding it painful to swallow when I eat I accepted the GPs decision to prescribe Onaprazoke inspite of being anti medication. I’ve now been on it for nearly a year and have tried several times to gradually reduce until stopping altogether. However, when I do this the pain on swallowing food returns. I’ve heard long term use can cause osteoporosis and Vitamin D deficiency so not concerned about continuing with it.
Anyone else on one of the drugs for reflux?

A friend recommended this but too expensive for me. She says she's reduced her medication considerably since using it. Apparently, it's also good for snoring.

This was mention upthread. It seems to be most effective for hiatus hernia sufferers, and you have to be motivated to do the regular exercises. The headline is rather misleading because I can’t see that many, or any health authorities are actually prescribing it. If bought privately it’s over £100, but I guess if it does work it’s better than a lifetime of medication. As far as I could see the research on its effectiveness has been fairly small scale.

When I told my son what I was going to do, he said 'Oh, I was thinking of doing that. Apparently, the Egyptians always slept so.

Raised my bed yesterday, so did my son smile, good night's sleep, no reflux, but only first day, see how it is after a Sunday roast grin. Used 2 house bricks either side & in the middle, which equates to 5.5inches higher, seems high enough though.

Caleo

I take Lansoprazole for reflux. I also have my bed sloping from the head end to the foot, raised at the top on 7 inch concrete blocks. I also don't eat anything much after seven in the evening. No more reflux.

Must do the same.

Freshair I was original on 40mg per day, taken at night.

Your brain needs acid.

Yes, I was falling asleep all the time too.

Feel much healthy now, without the tabs.

Yoginimeisje Mon 29-Jul-24 08:27:40

Yes Oldenough

I cut out tomatoes, which I loved and ate lots per day, I have sour dough, malted bread, only one slice for an open sandwich. Have lacteous free milk in my tea & coffee, Lemon & ginger tea after lunch and if needed after dinner. I don't eat dinner 3 evenings per week, to give my stomach a rest & my portions are small.

Haven't taken any tablets for 2 months now and all side effects gone. I was particularly concerned for my brain!

Only read first page so far.

When I said about vertigo, most was not too bad, but 2 episodes, if I described them, you would say I had had a mini stroke, [but def. The tablets] I lost vision, could see colour, but nothing else. They were 3 weeks apart, the first one I sort of fell into the door frame, thought; what's wrong with me
the second one I flopped onto the bed, couldn't see, aside from colour. Recovered quickly, but felt very shaken.

The other disturbing thing; I got food poisoning, dashed to the loo; terrible diarrhoea, but couldn't be sick, I was heaving, my body was sort of convulsing, but nothing would come up out of my stomach, I thought 'it's those tablets! because they close off your reflux pump. It was frightening! After hours I was finally sick, probably because the effects of the tablets had worn off. So that's when I stopped taking them.

CKD & COPD what's this?

Nexium is OTC and contains esomeprazole if you ever get stuck.

Annodomini, I've had problems with my throat for years. I know it's due to the reflux. I think I must have had it as a child even. I wonder if children should be screened as often this silent issue coukd easily be mistaken for just a cough/sort throat due to a virus.

annodomini Sun 28-Jul-24 11:30:04

I've been taking Omeprazole for a good twelve years (at least). #always losing my voice and with an irritating cough that was driving my family crazy, an ENT consultant diagnosed laryngo-pharyngeal reflux and prescribed omeprazole which successfully sorted out the hoarseness. I was also prescribed Ranitidine but that was removed because of a manufacturing issue in India and it has never returned. I do not have VitD deficiency and have reached the age of 83 without noticeable complications due to omeprazole and am very thankful that I still have a voice!

Freshair Sun 28-Jul-24 11:12:21

All the things I enjoy, coffee, wine, spicy foods and eating late make it worse, so does stress, laying too flat in bed. So even taking lansoprazole, I have to be aware of these things and check in on myself

MissAdventure Sun 28-Jul-24 11:08:56

I take rennies and omeprazole if I need to.
Usually when I've been lax about the omeprazole and need relief quickly.

Yoginimeisje Sun 28-Jul-24 08:46:45

Other side effect; scalp siriasis.

Hi Debutante

I suffered with same thing for years, finally my new doctor, on moving house, prescribed me with Lansoprozac. I couldn't believe after taking just one tab my problems completely went. Took them for about 5mnths, but then decided to half the does to 20mg. as was fed up having to go to the loo every 5mins & do a big wee! I then looked into the side effects that others had experienced and I was ticking all the boxes; vertigo, hair loss, fatique, low mood and brain fog. So, I came off it.

After about a week or so, the terrible, all day acid reflux returned. I was then put on Famotidine, I tried to find others that were taking it and if they had suffered from any side effects, but only found one that said they were ok on it. So, I began taking it, started getting side effects as before, halved the does, but then came off completely as feel these tabs are doing more harm than good.

These tabs go into the blood stream, therefore into your brain, whereas Rennee just puts a film over your stomach to stop the reflux and doesn't entre the blood stream. I've changed my diet, no more white wine, never drank red. I have a single G&T at the weekend and avoid spicey foods. Also' lemon & ginger tea after my lunch works wonders.

I'm looking forward to reading all the post, but need to come off GN and get ready for my morning work.
I will be back grin

I forgot to take my Omneprozole with me on holiday this weekend.
I usually have a couple of emergency ones in my purse, but there were none.
I was absolutely miserable with reflux.

Harmonypuss Sun 28-Jul-24 01:26:38

I've been on a number of these meds over the past 2+ decades, changing them every 3 or 4 years.
I also take regular vitamins B12, D, and calcium which help counteract the 'possible' unwanted side effects of the meds needed for my hiatus hernia.

Shirls52000

I have a hiatus hernia and Barrets Oesophagus ( a pre curser to oesophageal ca) and have taken Omeprazole for years. If I forget to take it on a morning I usually know I ve forgotten to take it by 10 am as I get unpleasant heartburn and as it suppresses stomach acid it reduces my risk of going in to develop cancer of the oesophagus so it’s worth it to me for a better quality of life

I have the same as you Shirls52000 and have taken Omeprazole for several years but recently when my feet swelled so much I couldn't get my shoes on, I kept going dizzy and falling asleep during the day. So I got around to reading that screed they put inside the box. And there were all my symptoms in the 1 in 100 side effects. So, I stopped taking it and the swelling went down and I felt so much better. My GP has put me onto Famotidine since the heartburn and reflux soon came back. I don't want to risk too much acid upsetting the Barrets Oesophagus. I'm feeling tired all the time again but I think I'm going to have to live with that.

My Husband has been on this for years for same symptoms you are having, he seems to be ok and can't do without it as symptoms come back fairly quickly.

ReadyMeals Sat 27-Jul-24 19:56:19

I've been on it for years. I have to take a vitamin supplement and iron citrate to make up for the reduced absorption. Other than that it doesn't seem to be doing much harm but yeah you need to keep an eye on possible anemia

Boolya Sat 27-Jul-24 19:23:33

I reduced from 20mg over 6 months by taking on alternate days. I am now on 10mg and want to reduce again.
