I am 76, short and overweight, but it’s sunny and I have my shorts on now. I usually wear them on holiday or in the garden, but generally make some effort if I go shopping. No one is looking at me, they are too busy worrying about how they look to be looking at me, and if they are I really don’t care too much, if at all.
When we have been abroad in Europe some really big women wear bikinis - which I don’t,- but I don’t judge and think Good for Them.
Because we are old and a bit wobbly that shouldn’t stop us wearing what we want.

Shorts or not?
(157 Posts)What do you think? Is 76 too old for wearing shorts.
I bought a navy pair yesterday, mid thigh, to wear on a holiday we have booked. My legs are not too bad, but it’s more I don’t want to look like mutton dressed as lamb. I normally wear crops…
I’m going with my daughter and three grandchildren, so yesterday while giving my Grandson a lift, he’s 16, I mentioned I’d bought shorts for the holiday, he just “Uumm”, I asked if he thought I was too old for shorts.
He was aghast and said “Grandma, why would you even think that, they’re just shorts, you just wear them, you’ll look great” He’s such a love ❤️
Do any of you Grandma’s wear shorts?
My opinions of adults wearing shorts are absolutely my own and say exactly what I think. Just as shorts wearers don't seem to care what people might think of them I really don't care what people think of my opinion on shorts wearers.
I was about 14 the last time I looked good in anything. I developed HUGE boobs (K-cup now but back then the largest size was DD so you just had to spill over and droop) and at only 5 foot 3 (and weighing 7st 4lbs) I looked stupid. After two children (unable to breast feed) I looked like a slob. I gradually increased in weight till I was 13 stones and developed back and other problems. My teenage daughter developed bulimia and my own shape/size was suddenly unimportant.
After 5 years of stress she got the help she needed and is thankfully now a fit, healthy, happy and successful 44-year-old mum and I was eventually able to address my weight problem such that (after a year of successful cancer treatment - not to be recommended) I am down to 10 stones and size 14. The boobs are still K-cup and I still look a slob but for some reason at the age of 73 I simply don't care.
For our 50th wedding anniversary we treated ourselves to a World Cruise (previous hols were in our touring caravan) and despite previous worries about my appearance we were thrilled to meet people from all walks of life, all sizes and shapes and all personalities, having a great time like us. Some ladies looked like film stars, most like the "girl next door" and lots like me! Nobody gave a hoot what others looked like and we made friends for life.
I am more than happy with my appearance now that I've beaten cancer. I can even fit into the lovely outfit I wore for my daughter's wedding 15 years ago!
Life is wonderful as a short, dumpy, large-breasted grandma and I will wear anything I want!
BTW, I hate shorts cos they make me look even shorter, so crops are ideal.
I hesitated in writing my last comment ! I thought that it might cause offence .
And does it really matter what we wear ?
I certainly wear what I want these days .
If I liked myself in shorts I'd wear them .
I think that you have to have a good body to wear them .
I've been told that I'm an overgrown hippy though my style of dress seems to be back in .
A couple of weeks ago , someone made some derogatory comments about my long skirt and described me as "that foreign woman " at church .
Years ago , I would have felt uncomfortable .
Now I don't really care what she thinks !
Esmay
I'm not a fan of shorts .Some women look terrific in them and I don't .
I have to be a six 10 and get a really good fake tan to wear them .
Out shopping , I saw lots of pretty slim teenage girls looking good in them and a few middle aged ladies who looked unattractive in shorts .
Their legs were fat ,wobbling with cellulite and pale .
Lovely as these ladies are - enjoy sporting them on the beach or garden and please wear a dress , skirt or trousers /jeans when shopping !
I think that they'd go home and change if they'd seen the eye rolling and heard the rude comments !
Or maybe they'd just have thought - so what (I'm being polite here!), I'll wear whatever I want! Eye rolling and rude comments say more about the person making them than those to whom they are directed, quite frankly!
The eye rolling and rude comments were probably me

Wear the shorts.
I agree mabon1- if the length isn’t right, crops are not just awful but often very ageing
I am 80 and I live in shorts when it is warm enough for me. How can you have a holiday without shorts? never. Go for it and have a wonderful holiday
Darling wear your shorts ! Wear whatever you wish! ❤️
I am chubby, but my forearms and wrists, and knees and calves/ankles slim- so I wear crops but also just above the knee shorts. My knees are OK, apart from the scars- but I am proud of them. 30 stitches on the right, 15 on the left. The 50 stiches on my right thigh are well hidden whichever I wear.
Wear what you want and feel happy in. My mil age 90 has the worst veins going but still wears shorts! Good on her
I wear shorts, but not usually 'in town'. More for casual around the house. Funny though, when I was recently on vacation it was very hot, and I put shorts on in the morning and kept them on, even though I did go shopping with my DD. I have a few short skirts I wear in the summer as well.
At 62 my legs are not so bad ;)
Others don't even give someone's shorts a second thought.
They're too busy worrying about their own imperfections.
Wear what you like. Don’t give a jot about what others think. But I do find a loose cotton shift dress cooler in heat, though. Talking of cool, your grandson definitely is!
It’s ok to wear them on holiday. I think.
Wouldn’t wear them into town, personally.
I always wear them on holidays as I think you don’t know anyone else, so no one to judge you really.
lol I had said ‘to and a row of asterisks’ but it’s been lost. You get my drift am sure.
Wear your shorts and enjoy your holiday.
I was in NZ visiting family in January/February, so their very hot (to me) summer and I was in shorts a lot of the time. Be comfortable and to with what others think.
Love your GS’s attitude 🙂
I wear shorts , no reason not to apart from a mass of thread veins ! I do start using "tanning " moisturiser early spring so by the time I get em out hopefully I do not frighten the horses !
Luckily live in North Cornwall near a stunning beach where nobody gives a toss TBH.
I'm 68. I have always disliked mu shape but age has compensations and I no longer care .
I'm tall and quite slim and I realised a few years ag that I have good legs .
So, shorts it is ... every day ,all summer if I can help it !
I love them and don't care what anyone thinks!
And so modest Bonnybanko
